Watched the Hobbit last night as well. They definitely brought in the lighthearted tones the book had on occasion, and Peter Jackson did a beautiful job not leaving anything out. Any of the critics wondering why it's not like Lord of the Rings need to understand that it's very much not Lord of the Rings, and neither was the book. The idea is that the world goes to complete and utter crap between the events of the Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring, due to the return of the dark presence of Sauron
which I was surprised they actually spoke about in the movie. I kind of didn't expect much mention of the Necromancer of Dol Guldur.
