Kinda annoyed all my new stuff is in visual diarys at home, and I haven't scanned them in and coloured them... But I've been kinda lazy with my art as of late... And haven't finished a piece in months. :c

Despite that, it would be nice to get some feedback. :3

You need to work a lot more on your colouring. Experiment with colours and techniques. Being able to draw digitally is fantastic, considering you can experiment and experiment and never waste any materials. Here's a few tutorials:

Another thing I notice is that your compositions/backgrounds are very boring. You seem to be more into character drawing than anything, which is okay I guess if you're not into really evolving as an artist. I suggest messing around with other subject matters. Maybe getting into perspective, drawing dynamic scenes, etc etc. Just practice with stuff other than generic cute girls

Yeah, I have a huge problem with backgrounds. I have experimented a little bit with doing more background wise... But in the end I do need a lot of work.
I am studying diploma in visual arts now, so I'm kinda hoping that may help with my backgrounds.
I will say one of the reasons I got accepted into my current course is because they liked my use of colour, but I do however acnowlage that I need a lot of work on shading, as in each piece I always try something different to try to get something I like... Unless I'm not being lazy that is, and just sloppily slap something together. ^^; Which I admit was what the above Ink fanart was.
With the calling them generic cute anime girls. I get what you're getting at. I need to draw more than just them... But I do however TRY to make each girl I draw have their own charicters, own facial features and not all have the same face.
I have a fascination with cute things. It's kinda been my goal for a looong time to perfect myself and draw the MOST sickingly cute girls I can possibly draw. Of course I'm not there... But at least you get an idea of my goal... And I like to mis that with say gore... Or erotica or just things you don't think of when you think cute. Of course those two pieces don't show that as they are both fanartz... But you get my idea


And now I've gone and ranted. XP I suck like that... But I tend to do that with things I'm really into.

Well Toast says color but I'm gonna say drawing, I guess she likes her brushes and I like my pens.

Your art is very cute, but I think it would be even better if you thought more about perspective when you draw. I don't think it's as important to know every little thing about it when the subjects are as round, I guess you could say organic, as most of your work is. But it's still very important.
In "Last Dream" I'm a bit confused about where the true horizon is for example. It's nothing big of course, but all those small things add up and I've personally found that the more I know about perspective the more complex stuff I'm able to pull off. Sometimes I look at sketches made by great artists, and I think what makes them so special is that even when they've just made a scribble they always got their perspective down. So that would be my contribution. I can recommend the chapter about perspective in Loomis's "Successful Drawing", I think it's a great introduction

Toast say color, Rubisko says drawing, I say both and more. So I'm going to pick piece by piece and tell what is wrong and some possible solutions.

The first big problem in here is anatomy. I know that this kinda of characters are mathematic simplifications of the human body with some changes to create focus on cuteness, but they still follow basic human anatomy, which mean hips need to be alienated, arm length need to be symmetrical, shoulders need to be proportionated and hair need look like hair and not a wig. I'm starting by guessing this is not dadaism, of course, but rather the simplified anime girl (which many artist hate), so you need to be aware of measures, especially because this "style" is subtended on a mathematical symmetric. You can see in the picture how they hair does look like a wig, that there is no organic continuity between head an hair, that one shoulder is lifted while the other is not, and which affirm even more the different length on the arms (you can see how the right arm of the character is shorter than the other); and the problem of the shoulder continue when you see how the hips are in a same line, making this even more imbalanced. Finally the legs, the leg in front of the girl is actually thinner than the one behind, ergo, further from or view, creating a deepness problem.

Followed by the line and anatomical problems you have the color problems. In a way, you have the idea of light vs shade, but you are not approaching the problem correctly, as you are using darker versions of the color in some moments, in other a more cold version of the color, and others you are just placing shades because you wanted. I also perceive a catalog view around painting, it looks too much like you saw a draw or paint where X decisions where made and you just copied and integrated those decisions on your head without making the required analyzes, I'm saying this because of the incongruence's on the shadings.

Finally the background, as toast said, its boring, and sadly you could have saved this picture with a good background decisions (well all the other problems would still exist but at least we would have something to support it), and the problem is that you picked saturated colors, which are good in many occasions, but in here, a kid with some kind of loli pop stick in her hand, you need some colors, orange and blue, pink and celestial, etc. Bring bright to a picture that needs it, make everything on the picture to go according to your point or the design point.

So in here everything I pointed before are still applicable, from anatomy problems, to relationship between hair and head, symmetry of the body (even so you are not showing the entire bodies, you can still see some problems between arm lengths), bad coloring and background problems. But I don't want to be repetitive so lets point its individual problems.
First of all background, I'm forced to say that the background on the previews picture is better than this one, this because, even so the first picture has not a good pick of colors, it has a intension or at least the idea of the intention you wanted to make, in here there is nothing, there is nothing to motivate the picture and even more you picked to divide the image between top and bottom (and is not well centered) and for my this is a problem, especially because you have to individuals making a duo so you want to make a division of left vs right, or making a circle to focus the view on the inside vs the outside. My problem is that you have something going on between characters but the background is not giving anything for the action you are drawing, and you need to give some affirmation.

I have another problem with this picture and its some what person, and its that its morally disturbing, now don't take this like "oh this guy is a moral asshole blahblahblah" but take it as what you are placing on the picture and what is perceived from it (its important, because you need to face the classic "what I want" vs "what they want"). I have no problem with 2 character of same sex showing love, and I feel no one should "cuz love is cool", but when you place characters that look like less than 16 years old, a picture showing their backs, when their faces are not of joy, when they are only holding from one hand which is lifted in a way that look almost like of trying to hold tight against something else (some what aggressive) and you have some saliva going on with no sense of "pleasure", you start asking yourself "what the fuck is this?". I feel this is also a big problem between people who draw yuri or yaoi (not in every case but is quite often) that they expose this love relationship of same sex as object of pleasure, they force the character and they pick very degrading poses, so it become more a reflection of a horrible dream upon the use of other people. And I don't want to let you this as a sinner, guiltier or anything, but I want you to think about this and ask yourself how to approach sex in a more inviting way (this is also because sex is great and no one should be forced, look forced or feel guilty from it).

First of all, I love Eternal Sonata, its fucking amazing, even so I almost didn't played it because of the character design, but it was one of those rpgs that gave you a great sense of adventure with a mean full story, so I love the subject. But you made 2 new mistakes: first of all tangents, we are missing to much from Chopin, the hat is cut, the shoulder is cut, and its stiff, it make it look like a wall in which Polka is holding (which it can have some dialectic meaning, but I don't feel this was intentional) and it doesn't help the picture, specially because this also imbalance the color choice as you place too much color on Chopin while the background is dull, making one side heavier than the other. Then you have the problem with the background, as I mentioned is dull, but the problem is not that much on that but rather on that you tried to copy what was in the game and not what the game gave us, the game was a dream and an adventure, everything on it had a purpose, and it irradiate a happy glowing feeling, and there is the problem with the background, it look too much like you copied the colors and not what is supposed to provoke. In resume backgrounds have a finality, it can be to point where to look, to what the picture mean to be, and to start understanding those you need to start looking the picture as a everything in which all parts hold a integrity for the purpose you are giving.


Observations: I can see you started on fanart (I'm guessing, so it can be something else related to it), so you created a catalog on your head about what you saw, but you are not holding another important aspect on drawing which is analyses. You need to go to basics, practice with human body (real human body), try to understand it from a biological aspect to a how things behave in it (how light clash on it or how things get balanced when we do things). A lot of people (specially who want to stick with fanart) don't like to do this, but ask yourself "what I want to do", if you want to do fanart its okay in never do these things, its not really productive when you get out of your adolescence but if you have no other objective than a hobbies keep going and no one is going to be on your way. But if you want to produce your own work, to stop doing fan-art and start doing you'r-art, you need to start studying from the bases, start to analyzing things and always ask to get better (some times you can get very discouraged from this one as a lot of people are going to do hard critiques and others might get better than you, but you need to start to aim higher if you want to start producing things that make you happy and others too). We have a lot of tutorials here for references (Toast posted a lot of those on some sections of the forum) and we have people who want to help, so ask them for advices so keep working and take critiques (because are not meant to hurt but to help).

Cool, I love art and we really need more people in mt that talk about ART and less about anime (I talk with 2 or 3 peoples from here about art). So I'm pleased.

I like to know you try, but lets try this exerciser: take some draws you have done of these anime girls, take the hair and colors out, then see if they look similar or not. Even so you say you try I can see, by doing this exerciser, that they are still very generic and similar. Again, drawing real humans can help this, and so be looking other artists.

I want you to re-think "cute". The idea its quite subjective and weak, so you need to understand the concept from more than one angle (viewer and creator). I also want you to think the point of the goal, as achieving "cuteness" is quite superficial and I feel, if you go into art, superficiality is a dead dog (specially because many aesthetic thinkers have stated that art =/= beauty). So, I don't want to bash your goal, but I want you to re-think it, because I feel, if you are open to see what is beyond than just cuteness, you might get amused, but if you don't want, you might going to end hitting a dead horse that no one cares.

Also, be aware of gore and erotism, I already point the problem on the yuri picture, so its better to re-think what is erotic, what is a fantasy and who to drive fantasies on a picture. More than anything I want you to think about everything, everything you do most have an idea behind a intension, and so you can achieve the full integrity if your own cognitive being on art.
