I'm pretty sure it works like the EXP share, you're still going to get the benefits after the battle. I also recommend you use this, going by hand can be tricky, especially if you goof something.

Embargo isn't anything special, it would be worth your while using that space for something more offensive or an other status inflicting move, they are really useful if you can learn how to use with offensive moves.
