A friend of mine had one because all she ever drank was soda and coffee. She got a kidney infection in both kidneys and had to go to the emergency room for like a week to get a shot in both kidneys to fight off the infection. They told her she needs to start drinking more water to avoid this again.

If it spreads to the other Kidney and you didn't get it treated... yeah, or stuck on a dialysis machine :O

However that is assuming the infection is actively attacking the kidney tissue and making it go necrotic... it's entirely possible you just twisted your torso in an odd way, so don't go about self diagnosing or anything :P
