I didn't get an iPhone just because they're kinda ugly to me. So I got an iPod Touch instead. Skype app + some minutes = good phone.

Depends, you can send messages through skype to other people as long as you've got Wi-Fi. You can also send messages freely between iPhones, iPads and iPods. Again, with Wi-Fi. I kind of don't like the idea of using an iPod + skype as a phone though since unless there's literally Wi-Fi connection everywhere, you're kind of boned.

There's wi-fi pretty much everywhere in 'Muricuh. Wouldn't recommend my method while traveling tho.
