Edit: ya np. There wasnt a trueno available and that was the only other 86 i had. If one of us finds a trueno tho you can either just keep that one or trade it back, idc. Also i just bought a fairlady z 300zx, so im gonna try to tune that up to use as a drift car so we're not both using 86s.

So I don't get this game. I just want to use my r33 but all these races use specific cars so to advance do I have to get one of these cars?

There are restrictions on some of the races, like some are only for cars within certain years, for a certain drivetrain, etc. your car either doesnt fit the category or is over-spec'd. If you need a certain kind of car and u dont want to buy one i can lend you one of mine. When we race tho there wont be any restrictions. If you want to practice with a car, theres practice mode too.

Im p sure you can get by with using just those for a while. You just gotta pick the right races. Also when you drift, do you use automatic transmission or manual

manual but I haven't really drifted yet

I'm tuning my car to drift and sometimes just do it without thinking about it tho

Hmm ok. I just started using manual to drift and im finding it way better after a few laps around the special stage route 5. I find the 300zx i just bought does best in 3rd gear going around turns so i try to keep it in 3rd tho i will shift down if the back hasnt kicked out enough or up if its a long gradual corner. Its pretty much just doing laps and getting a feel for how your car perfoms under what circumstances.
