I come from a small, nearly-all-white town where people rudely assume aloud that any black person standing next to me is a relative. I come from a town where someone approached a black guy, used racial slurs, then told him he'd throw him in a fire. I come from a town where a gay kid was continually harassed online and in school and the administration did nothing because the principal's son was involved.
People in my town joke about those things all the time, but what they need to understand is that kind of stuff obviously isn't a joke where we live. And I'd wager that many other places are like this, too, but we perpetuate hateful attitudes through language by attempting to make light of or diminish a problem that actually needs to be confronted.
That's why rape jokes, gay jokes, and race jokes aren't funny. They erase actual problems and further marginalize already-oppressed groups. There are other ways to make people laugh.

Pop-up reminds me of Push-ups. Do they still have the Flinstones on them?
