Okay for everyone that played mahjong -- you dudes picked it up p fast but some of the more obscure rules should be clarified. Here's a link to some general rules. It helps to know the terms like terminals, honours, and so on.

The one thing I should clarify is how to get a scoring element. You have to have at least one to win your hand. If you don't your hand is effectively dead and you cannot win.

On this page is a list of scoring elements (yaku).

Here are the easiest ways imo:

Keeping your hand closed and declaring riichi
All simples meaning you have no terminals (1's and 9's) or honours (winds and dragons) in a closed hand
Pure double chow: Two of the same chow. Eg, an 8, 9 and 10 of bamboos twice.
Dragon Pong: 3 of the same dragon in your hand
Wind Pong: 3 of either your wind or the round wind.

There are other ways as you can see on that link but these are the easiest ways to simply complete a hand. If you go further along in that guide you can see how to score hands that get you even more points.

Also furiten. This rule is complicated. Furiten means you cannot win from an opponents discard. You HAVE to draw the winning tile yourself. To find out if you're in furiten, look at all the tiles you could draw to win. So for instance to finish your hand you need a red dragon. Look in your discard pile. If there's a red dragon in there you are in furiten. If there are multiple tiles you can draw to win but even a single one of them is in your discard, you are still in furiten. So if you can win with a 3 man or 5 man and you have a 5 man in the discard, you are in furiten and can't RON even if somebody puts down 3 man.
