Too bad you can't avoid getting the sword.
Eh, I'm getting the shields because a few enemies are literally unbeatable without them. And I decided after beating Ghirahim in the Forest Temple to pick up heart containers, because without heart containers I can't get 100% completion.
EDIT: It would be nice if there were a 'Legend' mode or something where you always had 1 heart and couldn't collect any more, same as hero mode otherwise.

Like who. I broke a shield and was so overwhelmingly lazy I never bought another and found alternative ways to kill dudes I thought I needed a shield to beat.
Like the spitting monsters in the forest. Can't think of any others, but nonetheless. And in addition, can't get 100% completion without owning fully upgraded versions of all shields.
