its better if u make sketch first. Have you visited GB yet , i recomend you visit GROUPBOARD once. You still need to work mor on anatomy, poses etc. I strongly recommend you to do some fanarts too.
Hey guys, I feel I've come a long way from disproportionate attempts at Kakashi drawings, but since I still have much to learn, imma start a critique thread.I know this one's terrible, and it's my first attempt at art with a tablet, but... at least I actually put my tablet to use for once!
Here it is.

Yay tablet!
Like tri said I think it would help you to map out a sketch and some more detailed guidelines while drawing. They help map out proportions and muscle placement before you lay down parts of the final drawing. Don't be afraid to get sketchy because you can just erase them later when you figure out exactly what it is you want.
This will also help with when you draw the clothing on later. Right now it kinda looks like his clothes are sticking to him and defying physics in places. Clothing should drape the body and flow with it. Dig up some ref photos and study how clothes look on a body, where they crease and fold and how they change shape when the body moves.
Ok, and what exactly is a fanart? Also, I did do a sketch, sorta. Not a ball and cylinder one, which I should, but...
Fanart is when you draw characters from a book/cartoon/anime/game/tvshow/movie that you're a fan of. It does help out a little since you'll be looking up reference pictures of them (nine times out of ten) and getting an outside taste of character design. It's up to you though. Some people hate the stuff.
I've done some of naruto, shikamaru, gon, and kakashi.
Well that, but when you do a loads of it its like practicing. If you draw some characters from a pic you'll get to know the poses, shapes and tricks on how to make something look good. So its like hiring a model for practicing figure drawing, but without the hiring/paying part.
I have a new drawing, (black and white), but the power's out, so you can critique this one instead. I also have a colored one but I can't figure out how to shade it.
How do you usually shade?

There's two ways I go about shading. I either start out with a value sketch where I get my basic shapes laid out on a grey bg then flesh in my darks first and lights after. With this method you work from big blocks of value to small details. After that's done I will lay my colors down on an overlay layer and then do a little actual painting to refine things.
OR, I start with my lineart and flat colors. Then I start laying down my darks with darker complimentary COLORS. NEVER black/grey or white ever ever ever ever! Got that? Black and white shading on colors = bad D:< After I'm satisfied with my darks I throw in my lights and add a small handful of highlights very last.
With this picture if you're planning to stay black and white I would use the value sketch method.
"Join Luthor in Ultraman's fortress and leave Superwoman to me and my mustache."
Man I dont want to just plug my site all over these forums. The best thing to learn is some basic anatomical structure for cartooning. This will help you get all your proportions correct. That is the best place to start. I wrote a step-by-step tutorial today on how to draw Naruto....mods dont get mad at me but this is perfect for snowb400
