Totally for real. Open-endedness =/= story-driven. Actually open-endedness often = lack of a strong core plot.
The only recent games I can think of that had a really strong story are Heavy Rain and Alan Wake.

There is nothing spectacular about Mass Effect's story. Mass Effect 2 was mostly a generic TPS.

There are so many plots revolving around a "periodic cleansing" of some form of sentient life. I don't take it you've played Megaman Legends?
I get that you apparently dont like stories that have been done before but you otter appreciate good writing at least. You played the games right.
Good writing a story that will hold my attention for 20+ hours does not make.
So...is it all about stories or something? lol.
