Other option would be that this is kinda a race lord. Like Deads (esqueleton and suchs) are like a race? and he is his lord? He is the lord of creatures that never were alive in a first place, Gwyn was the lord of Sunlight and all these more bigger guys (I don't think Giants), Pygmy the one of mans and the Witches were like a community.

I know it seems pretty retarded, but in any other way would have less sense.

Well if you notice he is made out of dead people which begs the question how that's possible when there were just dragons around anyway. Probably a design decision that conflicted with what the writer was going for, or they just didn't care.

Anyway I believe that all undead are descendants of the pygmy, which would make sense if the intro happened several generations prior. You could assume that he got around, and his kids got around, and now all the undead are so annoying they're just throw into an asylum.

I read an interesting theory. The fire needs to be linked so the gods won't lose their powers, and to not do so would cause an age of darkness. Well you could interpret an age of darkness as men having to survive without the influence of gods.
