Eh, Macross is alot like Gundam. Loads of series that don't have much to do with each other. The original hasn't aged super well, and I personally don't like this newfangled frontieer too much, mind... So you'd probally be alright if you just started wherever. I'd recommend the aforementioned Plus, actually, since it's basically stand-alone.

I would have suggested the 'Do You Remember Love?' film myself as it does an excellent job of condensing the original series into a single movie, but lately I've heard a few folk say they weren't that impressed by it. It is very much of its time, I suppose.

You can't go far wrong with Plus, but (without having seen it recently), I remember it as closer to being a sci-fi drama that also has some combat in it than DYRL, which is more akin to something like Star Wars.

Something action based.

Black Lagoon. More action than you can shake a pair of berettas at.
