Yeah, I think most of the negative comments I've seen about the show so far have been aimed at that costume. Other than that, I thought it was very good. Which surprised me, as I never liked TTGL.

Eh, it just never sat right with me. It was trying too hard to be jokey and self-aware for me to take it seriously, but equally it was too serious to see it as a comedy. I didn't like the mech designs either.

Well let's not beat around the bush. I'm pretty certain the mech designs in Gurren Lagann were supposed to be dog awful.
I mean, it's like the polar oppisate of how micheal bay shows you a shiney tinfoil stickfigure with hotrod flames and asks "What do you mean it's not awesome!?". By trying to change the now rather archachic and oldish looking original designs, he made it look both silly and unrecognisable, alienating the old fans and potential new ones alike.
Instead, Gainax clearly made the designs intentional jokes aimed at silly robot shows both mecha fans and non-mecha fans would have seen as kids. So it's not so much a case of appealing to your sense of cool, but trying to fool you into a sense of nostalgia. I guess you could call it reverse-cool?...
