Why is berserk so inconsistent with how it wants to portray Guts. The first volume is so embarrassingly bad I feel the entire series would be better without it. It reminds me of Gungrave and Busou Renkin in that sense.

Never even thought about it that way. You're right, it does kinda feel like Gungrave, doesn't it? Personally though, I enjoyed the 1st volume.

I meant that if you skip the first episode of gungrave its a much better show. Busou Renkin is better if you skip the first volume, and I feel its the same with Berserk.
