View Full Version : Cloudy Big Hip Edition

05-30-2011, 03:29 AM
Hiya I'm Cloudy, some of you might remember me from the older forums we have had. I haven't posted on the forum in a long time, but I frequent the groupboard almost daily.

Iv'e been part of MT since 2006 and it has helped me grow as an artist immensely, I look forward to chatting to you all again soon.

N O W . W I T H . H I P S

These two images were cropped right off the groupboard from the limited space I was provided, such is groupboard :)
Comment and Critique to your hearts content, please make sure to explain reasons and how to improve etc I will take on board what you have to say ^^

Biggest beef, compositions are boring, even if they are cropped, they are tossed right there on the center of the page which is boring design wise. I have to say the second one is a stronger piece, you have a good couple of interesting negative and positive going on there and it is creating some interesting shapes. The first one on the other hand doesn't and the only shape being pulled out looks horrible.

Anatomy wise, even if your work is stylized, if your not going for the graphic look than I would like to suggest you start drawing Through the form. It helps drawing in the round and create the feeling that your work breathes. Finally you also have the problem of parallels, you have curves against curves, and straights against straight.

This is about the simplest I can find, ignore the spinal and all that lada da dadadaaaa; look at the arms, the legs, the stomach; you see a curve against a straight.

Lovin' those hips <3

05-31-2011, 05:40 PM
Synn, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I think you might need to take a step back and check yourself. Your crit is 100% inappropriate for the pieces at hand. Composition? Seriously? These. Are. Sketches. Figure sketches. The concept of positive and negative space doesn't apply. Additionally, I know for a fact that Cloudy can do a great job with both spatial and color compositions. Moreover, Synn, your crits tend to be 90% pretentious phrasing, 10% actual content. Your biggest challenge as an artist definitely won't be "being" an artist--rather, it'll be approaching other artists in a tactful, useful way. (Hint: typically the word "terrible" is neither.)

As for you, Cloudy, sorry about that. I just had to address that. I love your shoujo style and whimsical, croquis-like proportions. Your sketches are always so clean, too. <3 I was actually. On the GB a couple days ago and saw the top one left on the board and was admiring it. I thought it was you who drew it, too, so that definitely means that you have a solid style! :) One thing, though, (and it may just be me) is that sometimes the hips get a little too exaggerated for my taste. For example, in the top one the hips are far far larger than he shoulders, which probably wouldn't be negative or distracting, but what disrupts the effect of the full figure is the fact that the thighs don't touch. In most people with full hips, there would be little to no space between the thighs, and thats's okay! I don't think that giving your figure wider thighs would draw away from her aesthetic appeal.

Just my two cents, though. :>

05-31-2011, 06:07 PM
Synnworld, I would be less condescending toward an artist who is better than you in every possible way. Every--possible--way.

Cloudy, I've been drawing with you for the last week or so on the GB. Keep up the good work. I see the big hips and thighs thing is becoming popular with you.

I approach everyone work the same as I approach my own, you feel the concept of positive and negative doesn’t apply, but I’m sorry to inform you cf, but your mindset isn’t universal when it comes to art. Even figure sketches hold the concept of positive and negative, not just fully rendered pieces. On that note did an approach cloudy about color compositions, no. Did I say cloudy can’t do good spatial compositions, no! A gave a honest critic on two picture I see before me, not on the work I have not seen.

Synnworld, I would be less condescending toward an artist who is better than you in every possible way. Every--possible--way.
In other words give some useless bullshit like you just did instead of giving a good too honest critique? Sorry I would rather put the pencil and say I’d never draw again.

05-31-2011, 08:32 PM
... I rather enjoy your ability to consistently miss the point. (And I'm pleased to inform you of my preexisting awareness that /my/ opinion, inherently, is not universal.)

I'm done here, so as to not spam this thread. Cloudy is deserving of neither your comments nor my response.

05-31-2011, 09:23 PM
i don't see anything wrong with the way you draw.
looks pretty good to me.
i wish I could draw like that lol.

there sure are a lot of pointless arguments scattered here and there on this site lol

05-31-2011, 10:37 PM
lol@this guy. Anyway, Cloudy, you been working on that value sketching?

05-31-2011, 11:27 PM
^ didn't mean it in a bad way, if you took it that way. Just pointing out the obvious.

06-01-2011, 12:48 AM
That wasn't directed at you. xD

06-01-2011, 01:11 AM
^ okay good.

06-01-2011, 01:43 AM
WHAT THE HECK! 9 comments already! why won't people critique on my thread!? cloudy-chan is better drawer than i am..

is my drawings really not worth mentioning??

oh sorry about that...

i jumped to conclusion without reading the comments..

i guess in this case the reason why it has a lot of comments is because of some kind of debate

06-01-2011, 02:30 AM
Thank you all for your critique and comments. I appreciate the time and effort you put into explaining! ;3

Shaman: Unfortunately I have a hard time understanding some of the points you have tried to explain perhaps a more in depth explanation or different wording is needed and I think proper artist terms will help me; sorry.

C-F: I value what you have said and thank you for the critique I definitely understand what you are telling me and I agree with you! :)

Cype: I haven't tried it too much again but I will definitely try it again because it looks so nice, I look forward to drawing with you again!

06-01-2011, 12:36 PM
*decides to opt out of previous conflict * my opinion ? I think the style is really buetiful to look at. Especially the faces, there so delicate.
I would advice you be careful with the breast anatomy because I think you might be a bit unsure about it, particularlly in the last drawing you posted. The girl on the left, her breasts to me seem to be pushed together awkwardly. I mean I know they would push together but I think it would like different to the way you have drawn. Maybe the nearest breast is to close to the arm.

But it is just a sketch.. on a side note I like the clothing designs

Of curse I would, please tell me specifically what you didn't understand? That way I can come at it from another approach since the only person I care gets what I am saying is the artist I am talking with after all.

Some newies from GROUPBOARD.

Purim from Secret of Mana...poses are a bit meh.

C&C :3

06-05-2011, 05:39 AM
Ooh, I love the pose on the second one. The hair reminds me of Meg from Hercules, which is very good thing. I'm sorry that I don't have any critique to offer! D:> I would like to see some colored stuff from you, though. I love it when you color. :D

06-05-2011, 09:52 AM
I love that first one , she is very cute!

06-05-2011, 09:22 PM
Thanks :D

I will post a sketch and the coloured version(for C-F)
All of these are drawn on the groupboard(Sketcher)

Purim and water spirit Undine from Secret of Mana (snes game)

Kodos's character Hevisa:
Ignore her hand i kinda didnt finish it (lack of room)

06-05-2011, 09:52 PM
Ooh, the one you did of Kodos' character is really great. Your style is the best out of everyone's for her, too! Her pose and facial expression have a lot of personality. :D

And oh, thank you for doing that for me! ~<3 I really like the color choices. They're nice tertiary colors, which never seem to be used together. :>

06-08-2011, 07:07 AM
ughhh no inspiration except Secret of mana lololol ;3

Here is Phanna from SOM Crit please D: i'm sure there is a lot wrong with this one.

Helpful crits encouraged yayayaya

06-13-2011, 08:57 PM
Cloudy ccc:
and I'm loving the boots on the second one c:
butttt, I think, her (my) right boot/foot is turned to the front a bit?
that's just small nit-picky stuff though c:
and for the first one, I mean I can see that the fabric of her dress is quite ;o fluid, and thin and flowing and such
but I don't think it would dig into the crevices /that/ extremely,
like her belly button and uh, crotch area ;'] Rather than falling it, since her thigh is sort of pushing out/protruding the fabric would skim over her uh crotch area and flow onto her thigh from her stomach.... akfjdk IDKBRO.
I really dig the hair though! so voluminous and fluffy~

08-13-2011, 11:53 AM
Tank girl!

So tired ~TT 3 TT~

08-13-2011, 02:12 PM
Who cares that you are tired Cloudy!!! WE WANT MOAR!!!! Anyhows that last chick the tank girl looks amazing although i think that her rib-cage is a bit small still its great!!!

08-13-2011, 02:37 PM
tank girl is awesome! Jamie Hewlett is one of my favorite artists =D

epic drawing of her, you should color it O:

08-21-2011, 04:11 AM
Eeee, I love the way you draw torsos. <3

08-21-2011, 02:34 PM
Eeee, I love the way you draw torsos. <3

08-30-2011, 06:02 AM

Drew this today on Group Board. She's dancing or floating or something :cat_rosy:

08-30-2011, 06:10 AM
I like your avatar so much. Just thought I'd start with that! <3

I love your hair drawing and outfitting skills. the colors and movement are very nice. I also like this face a whole lot for some unknown reason. :) I rather like the stylization on the legs, too. That's very visually interesting. I think, though, that the arms are a liiiiittle too stiff with their straight up and down pose. Other than that, I think that this is great. :3

09-04-2011, 01:32 AM
Who cares that you are tired Cloudy!!! WE WANT MOAR!!!! Anyhows that last chick the tank girl looks amazing although i think that her rib-cage is a bit small still its great!!!
I think I might be dyslexic, because I read that last bit as "[. . .] that her rib cage is a big small TITS still [. . .]" at first.

As long as I'm on that topic, the way you draw breasts is awesome. They fall naturally and curve around the rib cage like real boobs do. And they don't look like balloons.

Really late critique, but the head on the second girl in post #22 is tiny.

Also, I'm subscribing to this thread because your art owns. And I'm gonna agree with everyone who says you draw torsos awesomefully.

09-08-2011, 11:02 AM
Yay your avatar is awesome and so is your last drawing but the av is my fav <3

10-21-2011, 05:43 AM
Thanks for comments and crits guys!

Still having some problems with poses, they seem a little lifeless and I guess I should start drawing guys more too lols..

These two I drew for Sutari's character conversation thread!

and the next one is a WIP

*red is there to see any missing spots of colour*

10-21-2011, 10:55 PM
First of all, I want those boots!!! D''''8 -dramatic reach!-

I love your character for the conversation thread <3 she's awesome :3

On the second one I can't help but feel she's a little too thin through her rib cage but that looks like a stylistic thing for you so just ignore me xD Her overall design is just uunnff! Love your work <3

11-21-2011, 10:42 PM
@Kasey Thank you hunny! Yeah shes a bit slender through the middle lols

Man I haven't posted or drawn in ages since doing my SaiMoe entry, but I cant post that yet ;D

The wolf girl @@ <3.... noice work cloudy xD.

11-23-2011, 01:46 AM
Thanks Miku~~

couple of others done on the GB when it was up last >_>

Her hand is a little small D:

and im too lazy to erase the underlines..

11-23-2011, 08:23 AM
Dem hips! Only critic i have is that the upper body is very, and i mean, very small compared to the hips. Then again it is your style so... it's up to you wether you care or not

11-23-2011, 10:15 AM
O I especially like the design on the first one :)

11-23-2011, 12:28 PM
I really like the style on those last two. It really has that watercolor-ey feel to it.

11-23-2011, 05:47 PM
i love ur style except for the freaky big hips

11-23-2011, 08:58 PM
^ I don't even notice how big the hips I draw get now, they just look kind of normal to me lols, thanks for the comment!

@Son44: I guess that's my style, there is no way in hell a woman would be that tiny up top lols :D
@Sylux: Thanks man!
@Hamachi: It does doesn't it? thanks for the comment ^^

11-25-2011, 06:23 AM
I thought I would post some of my art from my Ragnarok online shop that I did a little while back.

11-26-2011, 07:35 PM
Ahhh, the RO art is so cute. :>

And blegh, I had a long comment typed out regarding the big hip debate, but my tab closed. DX DX I'll try again~

I don't think the hips are too terribly big. The thing that makes the hips distracting is actually the way you draw torsos. In a lot on images, the torso is just a flattish cylinder shape. A good example is this image (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v380/selphia/STAR4.png). The rib cage stops very, very early in the torso, which makes the elongated abdominals unbelievable. The rib cage is also too narrow to have a different form from the abs, so in places like the back, it's hard to believe she has any sor of bone structure--the continuation of the ribs doesn't realistically transition into a location that could possible support the scapula. So basically all you hve to do is watch the anatomy of the ribs; make them a little wider and longer, and your hip "problem" will be solved.

But it's just an opinion. :)

11-27-2011, 05:02 PM
Fox got it right; however, the legs should touch at the top.
(Am not biased towards anime one bit.)-Heart
(Yeah, right)-Mind

11-27-2011, 09:11 PM
All your last post's art is cute (didn't check the others yet)

I especially love the little dragon... wish I could buy a shirt with him on it!!!!!!!!!!!!
(feeling like one of those female fenatics in anime that get way too personal with the "oh so cute pikachew")

11-28-2011, 08:51 AM
haha but I love the big hips small rips combo man but thanks for the crit! i'll try and take it on board ;3

also drawing males now

11-28-2011, 11:17 PM
Pretty sweet guy Cloudy-chan. However, I can't stop thinking there is something with his eyes... maybe it's the lack of detail or something, but normally your eyes are alive and looking somewhere, with him, it seems like it's made of stone... dunno if that makes sence.....

And another minor thing is that your chest separation (the vertical one in the middle of his chest) is a little out of place. it suggest that he has two pectoral muscles on each side that unify at the end. I suggest just errasing that line.

keep up the awesome art!

11-29-2011, 05:42 PM
The only thing i see wrong is the line between the tits. Cloudy.................you made it look like he has really small girl tits :D I think that it should be just one vertical line. Other than that pretty good :D

11-30-2011, 08:14 AM
I have to agree with Gedeon on this. The between the "breats" shouldn't be there. Another critic could be the area underneath the arms (latissimus dorsi). It's possibly a bit too feminine/curvy

11-30-2011, 10:00 AM
What Ged said about the pectorials...but the whole of the dude is great. Oh yeah...in reference to the girls on page one...I LOVE THOSE HIPS!! I too enjoy using wide hips but mine tend to get a bit 'overexagerated' I would be obliged to any advice that you could give me in this regard.

11-30-2011, 10:47 AM
that is one girly dude

11-30-2011, 01:50 PM
^and they get the most bitches in town...... ;A;

p.s. sorry for the bad language.....

12-01-2011, 01:40 AM
haha! im sry im not very good at drawing men yet, so they tend to get a little girly ;D I will take ur advice on board guys thanks a lot!

@Son is the latissimus dorsi really that girly? o.o I need to study chests/ribcages more then ;D

12-01-2011, 01:44 AM
I actually don't find him too girl in the anatomy. I would just suggest trying to portray the chest as something flatter and maybe making the eyes more masculine. Other than that, I really don't see what the big deal is--? I think you're doing a nice job so far. Drawing men is a little difficult after you draw women for so long, you know? :)

12-05-2011, 01:09 AM
I think the problem with the pectoral muscles are the size. Mine are about 3/4 of my ribcage, however I heard others who have it 1/2... anyways, yours seem a little short on the sides. hope this helps

12-05-2011, 01:12 AM
Ooh, that's a good one. I agree. ^

12-05-2011, 07:38 AM
Did this today for the pimp thread, this is Shaggy's character.

12-05-2011, 07:51 AM
Wow wow wow! I love her so far! I'm not gonna be helpful this time. I don't think I was last time either. I really like the detail you've put in her face. And her hips/thighs <3 Yay! Because big thighed women don't get recognized enough :P Well, sometimes. But I digress.

It's really cool so far? Will you be coloring it later? When finished, of course.

12-12-2011, 06:39 AM
And drew this on GB then cleaned it up today in Photoshop :3

12-12-2011, 07:07 AM
I really dig the armor and the post. Nice lines too- clean.
I think you should definitely color this, or have someone else do it :v

12-12-2011, 07:10 AM
Y'all so good mang ;_;

12-12-2011, 02:43 PM
Yet again......the handle is really ...........big.........
Oh and how i love the Girl-armors..........i bet they feel so .....protected xD Still a nice drawing cloudy, nice lines and your hips are more normal the usual. Maybe the feet are a bit short.

12-13-2011, 12:23 PM
Cloudy-Chan, I must appologize, I can't critique on your last pic, I love it too much, from the flower on the top, to the fact that such a small girl has such a big sword.... just perfect!

12-16-2011, 01:56 AM
Actually the hips are about the same, it's the upper body I made more "normal". People just think I'm drawing hips bigger I'm actually usually just drawing the torso and ribcage very slim and narrow.

12-16-2011, 05:38 AM
....or that. My bad.

12-19-2011, 02:40 AM
latest drawing I did for the pimping thread.

Foreshortening is really hard x.x, redlines anyone?

12-19-2011, 04:10 AM
I'm not going to be much help when it comes down to an actual critique but I really love her face and the way her hair is flowing

12-19-2011, 08:45 AM
I like the pose on this one but I think it would look better with the hips slimmed down a bit. Here's a quick red line that I did for you. Hope it helps. Everything else looks pretty good.

12-19-2011, 09:23 AM
oh thanks.. I like the wide curvy hips but maybe they could use a little slimming, probably not as much as you gave them though xD

thanks for the redline it gave me a bit of an idea ^^

12-20-2011, 04:33 PM
Yeah, I know you like curvy hips. I was trying to figure perspective into their size but maybe I overdid it a little. At any rate, glad you got something out of it. :)

12-20-2011, 06:50 PM
I would use the clothes to my advantage. use them belts to give us the feeling that we are watching it from above. So the belts look thinner and are more squashed from were are we looking :D

Now that i read it its hard to make sense out of it....-.-......fail...

01-03-2012, 01:49 AM
Colouring practice

01-03-2012, 05:17 PM
I've always been bad at critiquing, and that's only practice, so I'll just go with this:

That, Cloudy, is a perfect "innocent" face. I see no trace of any sort of ill intent, be it violent, sexual, or otherwise. A face like this immediately lowers any sort of mental barriers I have set up and creates a sense of absolute purity. It's beautiful and peaceful. Plus, I love elf ears, especially when they stick out to the side like that.

That's what I want to achieve with my art. And you've done it in a practice session.

01-03-2012, 06:00 PM
thank you so much Matt it means a lot to me, she is my healer from aion(an mmorpg where you can customise everything about your character) i tried to capture her sweet face ^^

01-03-2012, 06:25 PM
Is it good? The mmo I mean

01-03-2012, 08:55 PM
oh yeah its fun :D! I like

01-03-2012, 09:03 PM
Perhaps I'll check it out. I've been looking to get some MMO video reels for jaidurn to review in his game making. Can you play a male human cleric?

01-04-2012, 12:00 AM
nothing is gender locked and u can customise almost everything about your character weight height face etc u can play a fair few different classes too it has good pvp.

01-04-2012, 07:17 AM
Aw sick, thanks a bunch Cloudy and amazing art as always :)

01-04-2012, 10:14 AM
That's really cute, cloudy x3

Only ciritc i have is that it lacks contrast in the colours, especially the shading on the face if you compare it to the hair. Other than that it's good. It's a bit ironic that i point this out because I suffer from the same problem as well....

01-04-2012, 02:06 PM
I think the color choice gives a really bright sort of feel

01-06-2012, 01:06 PM
I really like how soft your style is, Cloudy. It's just so much fun.

With this recent one, Son pointed out contrast. Not only could it use a little bit more contrast for the face, but I think the deeper parts of the hair needs a little bit more contrast. I can see that you know how to use lights, so I'm not worried about those.

Oh, and the hips you draw look just fine. ;D

01-07-2012, 10:31 AM
xD thanks guys, and yeah I'm not used to using contrast but im slowly trying more out :)

thanks for the suggestions!

01-07-2012, 04:35 PM
I really like the color atmosphere in the hair. Usually people paint grey/silver hair in straight greyscale, which is really jarring in a color image. I love the fact that you used saturated hues for your highlights and shadows in the hair. Besides upping the contrast like others said, the only suggestion I have is to watch out for the hues you use in the skin. Because you have warm highlights and cool shadows in the hair, make sure you reflect that in the skin. I would do that by adding more mauve-ish shadows in the face. (:

01-07-2012, 11:55 PM
<3 thanks~

01-28-2012, 10:39 AM

I did this one today.

01-28-2012, 11:20 AM
I like it a lot. Fluid movement, good colouring, sweet lines. Only thing thats missing is her other arm.

Btw. what program and tools did you use?

01-28-2012, 12:28 PM
Nice dynamic pose :)

01-28-2012, 10:42 PM
@Son It's done on GB and tweaked it a little bit in PS

02-09-2012, 09:04 PM
I can't look at the picture without singing 'Kung-Fu Fighting', which funnily enough, does not detract a single thing from the greatness of your drawing.

02-13-2012, 02:51 AM

semi NSFW

02-13-2012, 11:27 AM
http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSbbeaW_WEE6KwBhTHEjd2srD_CrHbWT 3EC04nK3Nth6kxQ-TiO..and face...and hair...
The one thing that i find ... weird...is how the hands are so tiny.....everything else....great!

02-17-2012, 04:36 PM
There are only two things that stand out negatively to me in this picture.

First, it looks as though her boobs are being supported by a badly fitted push-up bra. I know that it's probably just a wrinkle in her clothing, but the line underneath kind of gives the impression that her boob is squarish, so I would smooth out both the bottom and top lines to make them look a bit less angular. If that makes any sense.

The other thing is that her knee seems rather thin and flat. I have a feeling that is probably exaggerated by the fact that she has large hips and long, thin legs; however, I think it should be a bit more rounded (http://0.tqn.com/d/exercise/1/0/p/J/bentkneedeadlift.jpg), with the calf muscle moved down a little.

Anyway, I'm impressed with the way that your colouring just keeps improving, and the overall picture looks great. Good job. x)

02-26-2012, 12:45 PM
Did this one today, I think where are some issues with her arm and hand positioning, redlines or ref pics would be awesome :O

02-26-2012, 01:10 PM
It looks stylish yo

02-27-2012, 01:38 AM
I love all your characters, Cloudy! She's so full of life! :3

I think you're right on the arm...it looks good, but just a little disjointed at the elbow, like it's turned out a bit too far :/ It looks fine otherwise. I could be wrong, but I think her left knee (our right) is a little big. Again, I could be wrong on that.

I think she's really cool! Your line art is so clean, and done so well! I'm jealous :D

04-12-2012, 05:02 AM
I did this the other day and i was playing around with backgrounds but still not sure what sort of background I want.

First I did a colourful simple background (lazy shapes lolol)

Then a plain and simple framed background

I'm not really sure what else I should try I was going for the "vintage" look.

04-13-2012, 06:07 AM
I adore the one with the colourful background. The style you've achieved with the character and the background there is something I always call "pop" and am always searching for more of but can never find it..

It reminds me a lot of the manga Clover. Or at least the art style of that CLAMP member.

The one thing that sticks out to me is that the fingers on the near hand look a little awkward.

04-13-2012, 09:47 PM
The thing i like the most is the colorful shapes. Although i wouldn't put it with your sexy-humongo-hips girl. She is well colored and all bit id try to fit it with the awesome colorful shapes of flowers n stuff. Maybe a bit more darker shades on the girl. I think the arms are a bit thin and the hands a bit small but that just might be how you always do stuff so i'll sip it. Looking forward to more big asse-i mean big hips....-v-

04-14-2012, 02:31 AM
She's so pretty cloudy <3 and I absolutely love the ruffles and lace! If you're going for a more "vintage look" I'd go with the bottom one. Even though I really love the colorful flowers and trees, the bottom simple frame lets you focus more on the girl and the awesomely colorful parrot. The only real critique I have is pretty nit-picky and kind of goes with what ged was saying about the arms and the hands. It looks to me that arm in the back is the same size or bigger than the arm in the front. The reason it bothers me is I feel like it takes away from the depth of the picture. Like I said... nit-picky. :) Well regardless I think it looks awesome :D

04-14-2012, 11:00 AM
ooh I never noticed the size difference in the arms, and the small hands again nuuu, I tried hard to make them bigger this time, next time next time! xD

04-14-2012, 07:20 PM
Ah, nice - she's very delicate and shoujo-ish.

The size of her hands doesn't seem like such an issue to me, given how slender she is in general, but I think maybe her left foot should be a little higher to account for it being further away.

If you're going for a vintage look with the image, have you considered desaturating the colours a bit? If you reduce the saturation and increase the contrast, it might give it more the look of an early colour photo.

04-18-2012, 07:38 AM
thanks for crits guys <333

I did this one today and it was only quick, colouring was lazy haha x3

A work in progress for my art portfolio revamping an older sketch and giving it a background

06-28-2012, 11:32 AM
Oh wow it looks incredible! I love the job you did on the background, her outfit looks really cool and the wolf looks just... damn. Cant wait to see it finished !

06-28-2012, 11:39 AM
i love this the character design is hot as hell and wolf A+ {{{{ but if the wolf is her friend than why is she wearing its' baby???

06-28-2012, 11:54 AM
This looks amazing so far! I'm excited to see it finished!

06-28-2012, 12:28 PM
Mother of god, it's awesome :O I cannot wait to see it completed :)

06-29-2012, 03:28 AM
Thanks guys appreciate the nice comments!

Does anyone have any suggestions for the background, it's a little sparse, I will be adding colour over the top anyway :3

@rayiles: LOL I dunno man xD she's a messenger girl from the wilds they call them Wolf Messengers their wolves are a giant breed of dog that they can ride, I guess I felt the hat was fitting hehe.

06-29-2012, 04:11 AM
Oh your style is great! Some of the clothing designs are really interesting and you have to love those hips! The wolf is really well drawn too.

06-29-2012, 07:48 AM
I agree with what others have said before me, it looks really nice :)

I don't know anything about this character and the wolf, you seem to have your own story there, but just from looking at the design it is not that far away from princess mononoke. If you want to put it in your portfolio you should try to make it so that it won't read as fan-art. So for the background I would suggest that you make something that doesn't look like anything from the movie. Maybe a cityscape (clean, overgrown, ruins) or something. You probably know something that will fit and still not read as mononoke :)

06-29-2012, 09:13 AM
lol as soon as someone does a big dog and girl side by side they scream Princess Mononoke, I do understand what you mean but fortunately my character looks nothing like her, I was thinking ruins so that's a good suggestion.

Here is an update on how it's turning out

you can view some of it at my livestream

Cloudy, have I told you lately how much I love your artwork? Because I do :) it's looking pretty awesome right now, I can't wait to see how it looks when it's finished!

06-29-2012, 09:18 PM
That's really pretty! The wolf's paw on the ground seems like it should be back more. I really like the composition, and I think you did quite a good job.

06-30-2012, 05:21 AM
Cloudy that is gorgeous. @_@

07-01-2012, 07:29 AM
Thanks guys, here is the latest.
I don't really know if I like the final result...

07-01-2012, 07:50 PM
i think it looks great :D

07-01-2012, 10:32 PM
well it is awesome although...
the (great) shading of the wolf doesn't add up with the shading of the girls skin. The shading on the girl is ok but her skin doesn't look affected with the same light source as the lets say shoulder pads. Also the wolf looks way more realistic then the girl and thereby adding to the mismatching. And the bg could use a little more details..at least the things in the fore-view where the girl and the wolf are running. Still a pretty GREAT pic cloudy!

07-06-2012, 08:56 PM
Through Gedeon was right about the shading problems, this image still needs way more replies, cloudertons! It's really nice work... In future I think more thuroughly considering the direction the light source is sitting in, and also not being afraid of adding really dark shades, could go a super long way.

07-06-2012, 10:01 PM
It's great Cloudy. Right now you're using overlay layers for coloring, right? When you have grass and stuff you might wanna paint the edges in yourself, to give the impression of a change in terrain.

07-11-2012, 10:37 AM
Thanks for all the critique, tips and encouragement, I am pleased to announce that the portfolio I put together got me into the university course I was after.

I am super happy and want to thank all of the people who over the years have supported my artistic development!

Wow, congratulations on getting accepted :D you will go far in art :)

07-11-2012, 09:33 PM
Congrats! I'm looking forward to seeing your art continue to progress. What exactly were you submitting your portfolio for? Was it for a single course or to be accepted into an art school??

I hope you will follow me on my doll making journey and watch me as I grow as an artist(hopefully :P)

Talk to you all soon!

09-26-2012, 11:31 AM
Nice! Still i will not be satisfied if there aren't any of dolls that have the "CLOUDY HIPS''....yup i made that a thing in my conversations with people... When i see a girl with sexy curved hips...i yell out cloudy hips....and people stare ate me...BUT I DONT CARE I KNOW THE TRUTH!

Now as much as ill sound as a jack ass the only concept for the dolls that i really like is the last one. It reminds me of my little clown marionette i had...

11-04-2012, 01:23 AM
LOL Cloudy hips! woot!

Hey guys long time no see! Here is my latest drawing, I realise she has tiny feet LOL so anything else you see feel free to mention :3

11-04-2012, 01:28 AM
Ahhh! I missed your art cloudy ;____;

Other than the torso being a bit of an odd shape in my opinion its great :O you're art work is always so awesome :D

11-04-2012, 03:18 PM
Other than the torso being a bit of an odd shape

Not being specific is really unhelpful, if you're going to critique you should find out why it's an "Odd shape".

To elaborate one what Demon said, the torso is extremely long. There's only about a hands length between the bottom of the Rib-cage and the pelvis.

11-04-2012, 11:00 PM
Ah k thanks guys :D

11-06-2012, 01:18 AM
I'm just here to say that I love you cloudy and I've missed you and your art. T_T It looks really nice, I dont really have anything to add at the moment... sorry? o////o

11-27-2012, 11:10 PM
hips!! eheh damn! y didnt i come across your art sooner .__. gl with the dolls :D

01-29-2013, 08:15 AM
Hey guys :D

Here is a quick one, Iv'e noticed a couple of little mistakes but feel free to Critique away :)

01-29-2013, 11:01 AM
The things I noticed were(And I can be wrong):

Her rib cage - Where is it? D: The torso should come out a bit for the skin to properly come around it. The lack of the width required for the rib cage makes her look rather flat. The blue arrows are pointing at the areas. I'm not sure if this is a design preference though.

Her breasts - The far side doesn't show her clothing coming out away from the body, like the cleavage would imply. The clothing sets on her as if she were a paper doll. I've drawn a purple arrow pointing at a line that's keeping it 2D.

Also, the brooch(?) isn't in the middle. Don't know if that was on purpose.

Other than that, there's just a few little tiny nit picky things. I'm really diggin' the design. though.

Good to see you posting art again, Cloudy!

Working on this atm

02-04-2013, 07:07 PM
Oh gosh, I love this new one!! I believe the arm's a tad bit short, but other than that, she looks great!

02-06-2013, 07:24 PM
Woah...ill miss the hips.. but damn....the proportions are great!I think your arms might be a tad bit thin.

02-08-2013, 10:32 PM

02-09-2013, 04:23 AM
Very nice sketch :). She is quite appealing. She doesn't seem to have big hips to me...perhaps just personal opinion?

-I don't find her arms to be too short, just EXTREMELY thin, particularly her wrist. In comparison to her well-endowed chest and abdomen her wrist looks as if you could snap it with two fingers. Widening the forearm'll solve that problem in a jiffy.
-The linework is rather sketchy. I realize this is a work in progress though so ignore this comment if I'm just speaking too soon.
-With such an interesting character, it's a shame she's just standing there as opposed to....well, doing something. Do you draw action poses or story shots? It'd be neat to see her in her natural environment or doing what she would normally :).

Keep up the good work!

02-09-2013, 07:18 AM
Thanks guys! Darkmousy your critique was particularly helpful thanks!!

02-11-2013, 08:01 AM
Back to doing my favorite thing, wacky proportions and Hips yaya

Omg dat ass.

You should dress the next drawing in nothing but a string. <3

03-11-2013, 10:58 AM
Working on this one now x,x

03-11-2013, 02:52 PM
CLOUDY!!! You are still just one of my favorite peoples, I love you art! There's just something aesthetically pleasing about it to me. And dem LIPS <3 My only things to take note of are the hand with the fingers curled: the fingers are looking a bit small in comparison to her palm, and the eyes: something is off... I think the one closest to us is a bit bigger, or the bottom lash line just isn't as dark so it makes it look larger than the other eye. Either way I really like the design, can't wait to see it finished!!! :D

03-13-2013, 08:50 AM
<33 thanks!

03-13-2013, 11:06 AM

I tried to fix the hand and eye lol tell me if it's ok or not!!

03-13-2013, 11:18 AM
This definitely looks better :) I love the coloring!! It looks awesome

03-22-2013, 05:57 AM

03-27-2013, 11:39 AM
hehe thanks!

Working on this now :)

03-27-2013, 02:43 PM
It's like she killed the biggest were-rabbit she could find, and skinned it's head haha. Looks pretty sweet. Gonna add any more crazy body details? Cause I would. Just seems like there should be more 'WHOAWTF' given how she's already looking.

03-28-2013, 12:48 AM
wow that is a really cool character cloudy

might need to be careful with ankles and foot angle but besides that i'm excited to see this done :3

03-29-2013, 12:48 PM
Awww you guys! <3 thanks for the tips and shit!
