Alright so I guess this will be my thread from now on. After snooping around figuring out how the place works (now its all new an shiny), I figure Ill post my A level art piece. Its the last piece il do for an actual art course. Just looking to pursue as a side career from now on :)

If you want to see it in large you can check out

But uhh..I only had my iphone on me to photograph it at school and I cant bring it home until after its been marked so.. the photo quality takes away a little.

That's a great picture. I especially like how you drew the trees.

Looks really good, very refined and finished. And that flower on your deviant, I'd say even better.

Thanks to the both of you :) And about the flower, did that awhile ago when I was first learning water colour. Flowers are a nice change from my usual stuff.

Alright I thought the digital editing I did on that piece took away from it a little so I figure the original should be posted.
http://i51.tinypic.com/2igewys.jpg

Anndd some pictures I found on my iphone , two things from my sketch book. Each one took id say 4 hours or so to complete.

These are both unedited originals.

You have a great style with a sort of wicked victorian feel to it. I especially like the one with the woman and tree dudes.

Rio

You drawings remind me of the older Grimm Fairy Tail illustrations. Were you influenced by them, may I ask? Also, there are some areas that are spot on with the thickness of the lines but in some other areas, I think you should've made them pop out more by adding thicker lines. The last art you posted for example, I have no trouble picking out like the trees and the human but I have to really focus to see the other animals; rabbit, lion, fox. Anyways - just something to keep in mind, imo, on your future drawings. Keep up the good work!

Yeah, your style is totally amazing. It reminds me of a heavy-lined version of Fleet Foxes' first album, which I love. The subtle washes of color work extremely well with your detailed lineart. :)

Gunzet : Thanks, thats one of my most mixed media pieces. Theres biro , ink with nib , watercolour , marker and I think some pencil crayon.

Rio : Yes I was influenced by the Grimm Fairy tale illustrations. There probobly my most significant influence actually. Ah Ok I see your point with the line wieghts. Il pay more attention to them in the future. Thanks.

Celestial fox - Thanks a lot, glad you like it.

Should post new art..but can't on this computer.. will edit later.
edit : http://i54.tinypic.com/2aali6r.jpg
Just a rough sketch I did in ink, didn't pencil it in first like usual. Iv tried to edit the annoying fold in my sketchbook and crap quality paper out of it.

Iv got a few new illustrations in mind that im working on at the moment so ..soon

seems like I'm looking at some gnalry fairy tale , book illustrations :}
very cool!

Celestial-Fox

What exactly do you use to ink things? It seems like it may be ballpoint in some places, but other times it looks like a brush pen or nib.

Scarletlight
05-23-2011, 03:57 PM
erikamae - Thanks !

Celestial fox - It depends alot on the scale of the work and the delicacy. The best example I can use to explain would be the gnomes playground (first piece in this thread).

The foremost tree's were inked using a faber castel black marker ( has both a thick and thin end which I love ), just because its faster and looks bolder in the front helping with depth.

For the background trees though and any other background elements I would use an ink nib to get the detail in small spaces. I tend to ink with an ink nib in my sketchbook as well. I might use a ball point pen occasionally for really delicate parts like sometimes on faces just because I can get more control that way.

Largely though I do all my inking with a nib. Also with waterproof ink incase I need to paint again after.

After being on the GB for the first time ever I conclude that its ..REALLY HARD!

Did do something productive though. I managed to draw a rough sketch of Thor(top left). Going to be messing around with Thor a little more I think, seems interesting.
http://i54.tinypic.com/1gj508.jpg
just cant get neat line art on there.. or digitally at all for that matter.

Rio
05-30-2011, 11:37 AM
Yeah, drawing digitally is a different skill set than drawing on paper. It's like re-learning how to draw almost. =_=

Scarletlight
05-30-2011, 05:59 PM
its so difficult ! , thanks for stopping by :)

Ok iv got some real art for you now, not just GB doodles -_-

ok first thing , I planned on doing a full blown Thor piece but got lazy and a different idea to work on. Heres the sketch anyway
http://i52.tinypic.com/m75r2u.jpg

Next a quick water colour painting, I do it real quick and it gets real messy on the desk haha. Its important to do the traditional stuff sometimes I think though, helps with the fantasy work.

http://i53.tinypic.com/24m7pqa.jpg

and as Rio said before, I was influenced by the Grimm fairy tale illustrations and iv done several interpretations of some of that work. Heres one I did, my own version of a piece by Arthur Rackham.

I'd suggest that you keep a close watch on Thor. Right now his right arm is far longer than his left, and the figure as a whole seems off-balance. Try flipping your paper backward and holding it up to the light to catch balance mistakes. I also might suggest that you find some references for muscle anatomy on the arms. You don't seem too confident in that area by your GB sketch and the paper one.

The watercolor and bottom illustration are amazing. ;_____; I wish I was as good as you. You have such fine attention to detail!

Scarletlight
06-03-2011, 04:43 PM
Yeah I really need to tighten up my anatomy work. I thought it was off while I was drawing it, glad you pointed it out because I will definatly work on it now.
Such a big compliment coming from you! Thanks so much.

The last thing I needed to do for my A level art project. Just a quick touch up thing. A background that I made for an animation that I then made. Wont post the animation because..it wasn't great but wil post the background.

http://i54.tinypic.com/123b9xw.jpg
Was looking to mix my usual fast watercolour paintings with a more intricate style in the foreground areas.
And Im sorry for always uploading photographs, I know it takes away from the pieces a little but my work is almost always to large to scan.

Celestial-Fox
06-05-2011, 08:53 PM
Uuuugh, I know what it's like to have work too large to scan! The background looks alright, but there seems to be a fight of atmospheric perspective. Things further away from the foreground should look paler in comparison, but in this particular piece, there are the dark green elements in the far back that are wrestling with elements in the foreground.

CF- Oh man your right! oops.. thanks for pointing it out, will pay attention to that kinda thing in the future.

Yes!! my exams are finally over! I dont know how well ive done if im honest but..we will see.
Any way that gives me time by the boat load to work on my art but first I thought I would review everything from my art A level. So I made one of those improvement time lines you see so often online. Come to think of it if any one hasn't clicked that I was here along time ago before, some of the older work might be familiar :).
Its pretty big so I wont post it directly, just a link.
http://scarlet-light.deviantart.com/art/Scarlets-Art-Timeline-214253510

And for those of you who would rather see some new work. Heres a look under my proverbial hood.
Just something im working on. Inspired by piromaniac from DA.
Still early days with the piece though.

Woah, that's kind of awesome. You certainly have a very unique style for MT.

Unfortunately I'm not really sure how to critique this because of your unique style, so all I can say is keep it up. x}

I hope its okay to make a second thread for this, saw Ego slip do it and thought it was a good idea :). If I cant make a second for whatever reason just lemme know and lock it up and il move to my normal thread.

Booyah!! were underway! Number one - Chibi
http://i56.tinypic.com/2rffy8i.jpg
Its called Ego. It was inspired by several similar pieces on DA so I dont know who created the original concept. Just a chbi me and my many sides I guess you could call it.
How fun is chibi!! I had no idea how fun it was to draw that way. And I love how important the line work is.

Next up : _____ *begins to select*

Rio : Ahh no problem. We will see about that though Rio!! haha.
Ramiel : Nah you can't, dont follow my poor example XD

So I had to complete the piece I was working on before I could commit to the 100 theme challenge. Any critique on this would be great.

Oh I like how you brought out the sharpness and color of the pic.. my only REAL crit (considering your style is very.. well.. stylistic).. is the girls cheek is a bit TOO bubbly... if that makes sense.. like.. she has a mouth full of something and refuses to spit it out.. but aside from that I love your detail on the stalks of the mushrooms :D Great job.. kind of a refreshing style to see XD

Rio
06-27-2011, 11:53 AM
Along with what Egolsip mentioned, her shoulder sloops down too sharply on the other side; the left side. Either that or you have to re-position her arm a bit because the angle looks off. Also, I think you could've done better with the folds on the clothes. Other than that... those trees remind mind me of Suess tree's except more menacing. C:

Rio : Ahh no problem. We will see about that though Rio!! haha.Yes, we shall! :3

Scarletlight
07-01-2011, 05:53 AM
ego : Oh my yes , yes it does haha. Have to use reference when im drawing that angle from now on ! Thanks
Rio : It does look a bit off doesnt it. Thank you for stopping by. *See next piece about the folds thing *

Ok so Heres my second piece of the 100 theme challenge.. im gna have to start speeding up..seriously.
Any way :

Theme 2 : Magic girl - Skulking in the caves
Tried to do a better job on the folds this time as per the crit.
And I felt like I had been to reliant on backgrounds so far so Iv made the character a little more the main feature.

I felt like the flash on my camera ruined her facial shading so I had to touch it up digitally. Had to use a little digital this time to fix a few problems.
http://i53.tinypic.com/2agt3qr.jpg

As usual heres the original for those of us that hate my digital touching... This one will have problems in though cz..yeh no editing.
http://i56.tinypic.com/2po8ho3.jpg

and a close up just cuz I can
http://i56.tinypic.com/1zfs96u.jpg

Id appreciate crits. But please only crit on the edited one (the first image iv posted) because thats the one I consider completed.

Please and thank you :)

Next theme : Witch/Wizard I think.

Egoslip

wow.. awesome work.. definitely a lot of time put into the craft of this picture.. alright.. crit time..

I think the girls anatomy is a bit off in the neck area.. and I personally would've put a bit of an indication of the collar bone..
The monochromatic theme here is awesome.. though as I look i don't really see much change in value or a particular light source.. increasing the range of value here.. would give us a more dynamic world I think. Remember lighting is just as much a part of composition as object and angle placements.. I also think some of the small details are a bit over whelming, kind of distorting some things. I usually like to emphasize detail using light and shadow play instead of straight direct lines... though it does fit your style...

Other than that.. (me being nit picky XD).. this looks stunning.. good job, can't wait to see more :D

Ah and yes.. you may be behind on numbers man.. but you're kicking my butt in quality.. i gotta step it up XD

Scarletlight
07-09-2011, 07:54 AM
It is off slightly in there, thats the killer with ink..its to late once you throw it in. Oh hell I forgot about the collar bone completly in this!
Got a point about the values, looking at it..there arent many, I'll have to practice my watercolor skills again I think.
Yeh alot of people find them overwhelming at times but its just something I cant help!
Thanks alot for stopping by !

Alright so I figured I would start my own web comic type deal. Wrote the prologue up in manga works and am posting the whole thing in novel form on a writing forum. Buttt you guys will get the comic version in manga works.
I'm not just going to post the cover page again ..would be pointless.. but I will post the original sketch and close ups like I usually do.
http://i51.tinypic.com/qnwrdj.jpg
http://i56.tinypic.com/29e0mjs.jpg

I should really have done a pencil sketch first..but I just jumped right in with the ink because I was lazy haha
Feel free to provide any crits, I would appreciate them.

Also this fulfills the third theme in my 100 theme challenge : CyberPunk

How's it goin MT'ers?

It's been forever I feel! I moved away to University and I've been swamped with work and so havn't had much chance to update things. But I'm going to try and get this thread going again because I need to work my portfolio.
Start off with some sketches from my sketchbook :)

And the Realm of Fairies.
http://i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z474/scarlet-light/Fairiesforest.jpg
Took the blasted photograph crooked and couldn't be bothered to take another because it takes ages to upload..

I'd be grateful for any comments or crit on anything if anyone takes the time to offer it.

Ta ta, for now.

I really like the fairy one. The only thing I'll comment about is the girl. I love her colors. Her head seems a bit squashed, though, and her arm is too skinny for the rest of the body to be in proportion. Otherwise, this really is some fantastic stuff, and I adore the gnarled trees.

The last drawing is wonderful! The girl with the little flowers is so nice! And I love the coloring and the shading. I think you did a good job! The green shows that the area where the scenery happens is very natural and this gives it a very earthly tune! I just would admit to add more flowers to be delivered (http://www.serenataflowers.com/Flowers-delivered) from the fairies. I think this would look cute :cat_shiney:
