Probably the biggest list you've done. Pretty useful info here.

Rio
04-25-2011, 03:24 PM
Yeah, I think it is the biggest list yet.* Glad you find it useful. C:

@ Jubeh
Thanks! Got any additions you can recommend to the list?

* I'll actually be doing a big list of How to Draw Manga books next which I expect will be much bigger... well, after I finish the Japanese SFX list I'm in the middle of doing right now.

On the storage option part. TAKE BROTHERSOFT OFF. Malicious as hell, most of the stuff is deceiving. I know this from experience and research lol.
Download.com aka Cnet is trustworthy. Dunno about the rest.

Oh, and add Bryce to the modelling list.

Slurpee
04-25-2011, 03:44 PM
I didn't know we had this. We should start an animation resource thread too .

I haven't even finished reading it but afterwards I will see if there's anything to add.

On the storage option part. TAKE BROTHERSOFT OFF. Malicious as hell, most of the stuff is deceiving. Wow, that's quite a heated response. I'll take it off the list then. And Bryce is already on there between Blender and Carrera.

I didn't know we had this. We should start an animation resource thread too .
A free animation program thread was started here (http://www.mangatutorials.com/forum/showthread.php?666-Free-Animation-Programs-%28Sticky-%29)and a list of animation tutorials was added to the Massive Online Tutorials (http://www.mangatutorials.com/forum/showthread.php?84-Massive-Online-Tutorials-List-v.3.0&p=3027&viewfull=1#post3027) list so.... it would be cool but I think we're going to need more stuff to make a dedicated list.

I haven't even finished reading it but afterwards I will see if there's anything to add.
Ok, cool.

On another note, just added:

There was a comment on Reddit (http://www.reddit.com/r/gamedev/comments/h809g/the_ultimate_indie_game_developer_resource_list/) regarding the neutrality/impartiality of the engine list. If that person happens to read the rest of this thread then my answer to that is this:
This list, as the title says is a resource. No one way, service, or tool is the right one for everyone. Everyone's experience is also different and to limit the list to those that I (or anyone else) would only use would defeat the whole purpose of the list. If you really like a certain software, tool, or service - then by all means, feel free to recommend what you like here or elsewhere. In the meantime, I'll leave it to each individual to decide for themselves what to use or not use.

xelanoimis over at the IndieGamer Dev Forum (http://forums.indiegamer.com/showthread.php?27344-The-Ultimate-Indie-Game-Developer-Resource-List) has requested that I split the engines per generic or specialized use. I may do this when the list becomes longer (i.e. after I look through the list of game engines he linked to O_O). For now, everything will remain in alphabetical order. As always, any suggestions, recommendations and so on will be very much appreciated.

Oooooh, what kind of engines?

Rio
06-16-2011, 10:58 AM
All kinds from free to commercial; Delphi, C, C++, VB, .NET, Java, and so on. I think there's a good 50+ I need to add. Hopefully I can get it done by this weekend. I'm basically going to redo the Engine list by free or commercial and also further sort it out by programming language so it won't be a great big wall of text.

Do you know of any game libraries, btw? The list in that section is sadly lacking...

For review sites, GekikaraReview (JP) is great, especially if you want to look into Japanese indie games. Freegame.jp is also good.
TIGdb and Pixel Prospector are good review sites where you can submit your projects for people to stalk. Allegro.cc is a community/review site for games made in Allegro. GameMakerGames, 64 Digits and the Daily Click (Klik & Play) are also good. Experimental Gameplay Project is a site that emphasizes innovation. RPGmaker.net is a community site for RM games, dating all the way back to RPGMaker 2000. Also, keeping up with youtube channels like Bytejacker is a good way to see new games, as they have segments entirely dedicated to Indie stuff.

And don't forget Newgrounds for portals.

Reason is a great (but expensive) commercial digital synth with like a million different features for creating music. Metasequoia is a free Japanese 3d modeling program, though the way it handles texture mapping is a little hard to figure out.

Annnddd I'll contribute more when I can think of them.

EDIT: I'd recommend taking RPG JS off the list because they use RPG Maker materials but don't have rights to license these materials for commercial use as they don't have the endorsement of Enterbrain. Their terms of service is really faulty.

I've added a lot of engines taken from The Game Programming Wiki (http://gpwiki.org/index.php/Game_Engines). If you need more information about any of these engines, go there for a nice listing. UDK (http://udk.com/) is Unreal Engine 3. Free for commercial use until the devs make more than $50,000. You can also make custom Unreal Tournament 3 maps.

T1B3R1U5

the deluxe version of UT3 also had the official UT Engine and Map editor as well I do believe. I could be wrong though.

Matt
02-02-2012, 03:14 PM
I had UT3 till I lost the CD and had to wipe my hard drive. The editor did come with it, as far as I remember. I didn't play around with it much in my UT3 days.

Was it the full UDK or just a map editor? That, I can't remember.

Awesome work Rio! Really impressed how you got all of this together :) Can I suggest www.indieloopgarden.com as a resource for music? Its not a download site but a new place you can commission original music soundtracks. The site includes composers of games like Fez and Aiko Island all collected together in one place.

A list like this is going to be really useful for developers. Have you thought about giving it its own URL? I'd donate :)

Thanks!

Hey, nice site suggestion! I'll add it on once I accumulate a good amount of links once more. As for making an independent site listing all of these links... hmmm, I've never thought about it but I'll consider it. C:

Btw, ever been to the Indiegamer forum (http://forums.indiegamer.com/)? I would really suggest you mention your (is it yours?) site there if you haven't already. Most indie devs hang out there (at least, those who are known to make and sell indie games).

Thanks, yes its my site :) I'll take a look at indigamer this afternoon! As you hinted, It's definitely going to be important to find the right kind of indie dev – one who actually has a budget for custom sound (but just doesn't know where to look yet). I guess there's a place for stock libraries/free music too (Braid is a brilliant example) but my hunch is many would rather pay a bit more for something equivalent in quality to the indie game music bundle (http://www.gamemusicbundle.com/) that can actually be a marketing asset.

UDK (http://udk.com/) is Unreal Engine 3. Free for commercial use until the devs make more than $50,000. You can also make custom Unreal Tournament 3 maps.

Unreal Development Kit isn't really the best choice of rendering engine. Your best bet is to find another indie game company/small-scale game company with significant success, like Frictional, and ask them if you can use their engine. Jaidurn and I plan to use their library and physics engine for our horror game.

Hi all,

my name is Pedro Alonso Pablos and I just stumbled upon this great videogame resources page (if you look for something like 'videogames resources' on Google, it's the first entry; congrats!). I'm a game developer who knows how to program, paint and make music. I usually make indie games on my own. But I have surplus music production. I'm a music lover and I love to create my own themes, especially classical.

That's why I've opened the page I'm pointing to below. It's a free music resource with 10+ original songs for you to use on your games for free, this means I grant you a commercial license of this music for your project. Currently I'm not planning to shut down free licenses until 2015...

If you would like to upload the list with this resource it would be great for me, and I hope useful for you. I'm planning to update that list with new songs in a few months, songs are already made but I'm waiting a littlebit until indie developers use these listed songs. So far there are, I think, more than 10 indie videogames which have featured my music and I hope many more come in the future. You don't have to credit me if you don't want to, but if you would like to do it, please use this name: 'Pedro Alonso Pablos' (my name).

I hope you find this resource useful.

Best regards,

Pedro :cat_ahahaha: :cat_ahahaha: :cat_ahahaha:

You oughta put newgrounds in there

Rio
04-05-2012, 06:00 PM
The reason why I didn't put newgrounds is that it is mostly a site for free games. The purpose of the list is to provide resources for indies who are interested in selling their games. Though newgrounds may be a nice site to send out a free remixed version of a commercial game, the audience skews more towards those who are there for free games and are generally not the buying type.

Soughtafter_Sounds

Hi Rio,

Would it at all be possible to include our organisation which is http://www.soughtaftersounds.com as we specialize in providing original musical scoring and sound FX to game developers and filmmakers.

At present and aside from custom work, all music can be used in commercial applications without cost, only credit.
All music and scoring is composed, written and mixed down at our own studios therefore unique to us and not available elsewhere on the internet.

Below are two examples of part of the scoring recently written for independent game developers. One is for an up coming survival horror game, and the other is for a more humorous game currently in development.

Project Symphony:

High Noon:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9FyFcnVFouI

Hopefully this and a look at the site will let you know the kind of thing that we do, and just to put anyone's mind at rest I can safely say that I'm not a bot :)

I thank you for your time.

I have created a game development page that would be useful for those interested in game development:
http://freegameslist.weebly.com/game-creation-tools.html

It's made up of 3 Sections:
1. A list of game engines including free and paid for ones. Plus some that 'don't need programming'.
2. A list of free game development tools such as free 3D modelling programs, texture generators, sound effect generators etc.
3. Additional links related to game development resources such as free skybox textures, models, sounds etc.

Plus I'm not selling anything!:cat_shiney:

I hope to add new stuff like even more free game development tools from time to time so I suggest that you check out the whats new page (http://www.freegameslist.weebly.com/whats-new.html) to see any new additions to the website!

Old threads can be revived just as long as there is something new to say. 'Sides, this is a stickied thread - any new information is okay just as long as it is relevant to the topic. I suggest you re-read the rules for each section and the general global rule in the General Discussion.

I haven't added this to the list yet since it's not officially out* but for those not in the know:

There's a new widget going to be put out the folks making the Humble Indie Bundle called Humble Store widget. As far as I know, it's still in the works but so far, it's a payment processor using Paypal, Amazon, and Google Checkout. You can purchase indie games as gifts and unlock games on Steam if your game is on there. Games using this widget must be DRM free and cross platform. There's no official page for this so I'll just link to this Indie Game Mag article (http://www.indiegamemag.com/jeff-rosen-the-humble-store-is-something-we-are-working-on/) though you can probably dig up more with a search.

* It seems to be in use by indies who are personally asked by the Humble Store makers.

On another note, I'm considering taking down all Digital River payment processors as it seems that they have changed their plans in a way that isn't really advantageous for indie dev's to use. Digital River processors include RegNow, SWREG, esellerate, BlueSnap (once was Plimus), etc. I'll take a look at their plans and make a decision about it. If you guys have any info for or against them, do leave a reply.

Also, if you guys have any news or insight I should know in regards to making this list better, comments are always welcome. Thanks!

On my journey through the Internets I have come across a number of free Image and Paint programs and I thought they would be useful here:(ALL WINDOWS although some may have Linux versions as well)
(ALL FREE)
Photofiltre:http://photofiltre.free.fr/ (has free and commercial versions)
The one I use the most. Think of it as a grown up version of MS Paint. Has lots of features but is lightweight. Supports simple layers.

MyPaint: http://mypaint.intilinux.com/
If you love to use brushes and painting and little else this maybe for you. Its features many brush types has a very nice minimalist user interface and you will love painting on it!

Deep Paint (58MB) http://download.chip.eu/en/Deep-Paint-2.0_132831.html
A commercial program that changed to freeware. Apparently this program couldn't compete with Corel Painter. IT can be thought of as a more powerful version of My Paint listed above.
Here is a review for Deep Paint:Great for digital painters and illustrators alike. Great features, easy-to-use, very bright and innovative. Thanks a lot!

Chasy Draw IES (17.4MB) http://www.jpchacha.com/chasysdraw/'
Another great program, but has too many features to talk about so just check it out.

Alchemy (requires JAVA) http://al.chemy.org/
Alchemy is very special because its creators want it to be used to help inspire ideas. While you control the program the image ideas that may come out are far from predictable. You can even use a microphone to help create artwork!

Livebrush (Free version, email addres required, requires Adobe Air, commercial version available)
Another rather special program to create artwork. The brush is affected by how fast you paint and some of the effects are truly amazing.

ENJOY!!!
Don't forget my site:
