Ok so as the first time to not post in the Welcome Wagon, I wanted to find out peoples favorite characters from manga/anime and which genre.

For example.
Fav. Vamp.: Alucard from Hellsing
Fav. Child Protagonist: Negi Springfield from Mahou Negima Sensei
Fav. "Gender Bender" char. (and in my case the only gender bender I like): Prince and counterpart from 1/2 Prince
Fav. Villain: Pain from Naruto
Fav. Martial Artist: Kenichi from HSDK. (In this case would the "K" be redundant?)

I can keep this up for almost any genre. So let me know y'alls favorites!

Joseph Joestar in the genre of Martial Arts Vampire Horror Manga

Sounds like he's from a B.A. Manga. What's the name of it?

Saitama from One Punch Man in the role of best character in best comic. Or as best martial artist hero.
Seriously though. If you're not reading One Punch Man you're my enemy and I will get it cleared with the Guild I will arch you.

I'd like Kenichi more if he had mental growth to compliment his physical growth, but he is my favorite martial arts character. He's one of few who actually grows at all.

Villain: Iroh from Last Airbender.

Vampire: Marceline from Adventure Time (not anime, but I don't really like any anime vampires).

Child: Aang, also from Last Airbender.

Decoy hero: Firo from Baccano!

EDIT: Since reading about it in Bakuman I've been intending to read One Punch Man. I'll give it a download tonight and read it tomorrow.

How is Kenshiro not everyone's favorite martial arts character.

Child is Astroboy.

Vampire is Dio.

Genderless??

The best villain of all time is Yoshikage Kira. You guys don't know and you'll deny it for eternity because you'll never read Jojo part 4 but it's the truth.

Villain: Iroh from Last Airbender.

I get that he's an antagonist for much of the story but villain? He is arguably one of the only genuinely good people in the show.

I admit, defining Iroh as a villain is unjust--villain and antagonist are not and should not be synonymous.

^jubeh Freeza has a gender, he's a dude. Granted he has no telling factor, when the Ginyu Force addresses him as "Lord Freeza" kinda gives it away. Though again if he's truly genderless, what title could he/she/it be given?

As of last night I found a character that I'm psyched to see, and he is Morito, from Gun x Clover. He's taking the rank of "Fav. Military Character."

JJJorgie
06-07-2013, 02:08 PM
Freeza's naked whenever you see him and in case you didn't notice, "he's" got nothing

Wolfen300
06-07-2013, 02:13 PM
Yeah, but he's not human. Retractable maybe? Maybe like a chicken and has the jewels in his back? Idk where they'd be but what's the point of giving a genderless character a gender-specific title?

JJJorgie
06-07-2013, 02:16 PM
Well, they can't really just call Freeza "it" the whole time. Besides, lots of genderless things have gender-specific titles (boats, cars, etc.)

Wolfen300
06-07-2013, 02:20 PM
Yeah but that's out of tradition. And mostly it's always "she" and that's about it. And Cooler is Freeza's brother, and I think (I'm not 100% sure) at one point Cooler calls Freeza out saying something like "What, little brother, can't deal with these weaklings?!" or something along those lines. I may go look it up but I can't remember exactly. Been too long since I've watched DBZ

jubeh

I always figured he was referred to as he because we don't really have a polite way to refer to genderless being otherwise in english.

Wolfen300

Hmmm that may be the case O.o

Oh yeah what about Hermaphrodite? lol

Herm Freeza, Goku is kicking our butts!

Hm... doesn't have the same ring to it.

What about the original Japanese? I'm largely unfamiliar with the rules of gender in Japanese language, but surely there's some ways of telling gender by the way words are used to refer to something?

And, honestly, given the childish sense of humor that Toriyama and DBZ had, I'm pretty sure if Frieza was literally supposed to be a genderless or intersex creature that there would have been some transphobic jokes made at their expense.

Wolfen300

This is very true. Either way, its still hilarious when you think about it.

Anyhow, so far the only female character I like (and I say like meaning it's not based on breasts) and that's Evangeline A.K. McDowell from Mahou Sensei Negima. (Took me like 6 times to type that and I'm still not sure if it's right)

Lol FLCL. I liked Eureka Seven, read the manga and was kinda sad how it ended =[

Regantor
06-12-2013, 11:01 PM
Well the main thing I always think about Eureka Seven is that I probably would have enjoyed it ten times more if Anemone and Dominic were the actual focus. Anemone was a highly entertaining childish bitch that actually took some character development. Eureka and Denton were perfect little goodie two shoes throughout the entire thing... and I mean, wtf, that's not what people are like! People are jerks! Jerks that you learn to like!

Wolfen300
06-12-2013, 11:05 PM
Lol no there are good people out there. But there's a saying: "Happy people are all happy in the same ways. But sad people are all sad in different ways. Meaning? Happy people are boring." And you're right, it woulda been better if Anemone and Domonic were the main chars.

I have no idea what any of you are talking about... (Apparently, I'm not as much of an aficiando as I professed to be.) That being said, there's no way in hell that I'm watching/wading through all of DBZ, Cowboy Bebop, One Piece, or Naruto. I just... don't have the time anymore. (I guess that's not really saying anything, since I watched all the Bleach)

My giant random list:
============

Favorite twisted sadist: A tie between Light and Izaya Orihara from Durarara

Favorite non-Samurai: Sakata Gintoki (Gintama, see my av)

Favorite character who stands around and does essentially nothing the whole time and yet still manages to up the stakes and suspense more than the main character: Udyu Ishida

Favorite Furry: Naruto (Come on guys, think about it)

Favorite psuedo Pirate: Zorro

Favorite outlaw: (sort of): Vash the Stampede

Favorite Parent with baby: Oga Tatsayumi

Favorite cat: Train

Favorite noir detective: That one dude from Darker than Black. (He only got like, two episodes)

Favorite naked dude: Gray what's-his-face

Favorite cheesy demon protagonist: Kyo from Demon Eyes Kyo

Favorite transvestite: Arata from Arata

Favorite mole-faced older brother: Yukio (I think) from Ao no Exorcist

Favorite walking church: The girl from Magical index

Favorite antiheroic side character: Zuko

Favorite walking, talking suit of armor: Need more be said?

Kodos
06-13-2013, 11:41 AM
If Naruto's a furry I'm pretty sure that means Naruto's also genderqueer considering the fox is a chick and all. Just sayin'.

Favorite Living God: Saitama from One Punch Man.
Favorite Mook Mobile Suit: Zaku 2. The OG. Rep the row.
Favorite Badass: That guy in the red coat. You know the one.

Honestly it's part of why you can make this thread at all. Anime/manga are really bad when it comes to re-using the same archetypes and character tropes over and over and over again, ad nauseum, but without bringing anything new or interesting to it. I mean, like.

My favorite shonen protagonist is the one who is kind-hearted but stupid. He has an enormous appetite, although he never gets as fat as one who eats like he does should, and values his friends above anything else in the world. Despite his kindness and his deeply compassionate nature, he loves the thrill of fighting and when he's not fighting he's often training to be a better fighter. You know who I'm talking about, right?

But eh.

Mellowlink (Armoured Hunter Mellowlink)

Hmm, did not expect Mellowlink. I liked the show, but I dunno... Certainly a very different style of protag to Chirico in the main series.

Regantor
06-13-2013, 08:37 PM
@ Wolfen; Well I guess if I can only relate to jerkish characters that probably says alot in itself, lol...

@ Gaff; I prefer Mellowlink just a little more than Chirico probably because he has a little bit more of a human element, really... But it might be the lack of a "newtype" thing going on too.

@ AnimeRebel; Cowboy Bebop is only 26 episodes long, 27 if you count the movie.

Bleach is 366 episodes long.

Yet you have no time for the former... How and why did this happen? ಠ_ಠ

Just because I say so, top five criminally short anime shows that you could probably watch in an afternoon;

5) Gunbuster (How to blow up half the galaxy... in three hours/six episodes. >_>)

4) Blue Submarine No.6 (Just four episodes, with enough plot to fill out twenty six easily.)

2) FLCL (Six episodes. Probably the perfect length, but still... It at least begs for something similar.)

Well... the thing is, I know I SHOULD see Cowboy BB, but when I sat down to watch it... I don't know. A show has to sort of "click" with me in order for me to watch it. I had the same problem with FMA the Brotherhood.

As for Naruto, I only got like, 40 something episodes in before I got bored because of dead suspense.

theAnimeRebel

Oh yeah, @Regantor ---I watched Bleach a couple years ago, when I DID have more time, then I had to go back when they were done with the subs for the sole sake of fan loyalty. Heh.

And I didn't say I didn't have time for CBBB, just that I have less time in general in regards to anime nowadays and am a lot choosier. Choosier as in watching the stuff that I like. (So, it's on my bucket list... I'm getting there.) I didn't like CBBB when I first saw it so I didn't watch it, as simple as that.

Man, I'd completely forgotten about that one. I saw some of it (dubbed into French) a few years ago and thought it looked interesting, but I never got round to picking it up. Apparently discotek are re-releasing it though, so happy days.

Super later reply, but yeah.

It's one of those "blew the budget in ten minutes" series, so I'd recommend it. Has a little of the same CG problem as Initial D, but not half as bad. The super inventive jazz soundtrack makes up for it anyway. It's also the best kind of mecha series; one that barely names or talks about the mecha in it. I guess I'd say it reminds me of Raxephon in alot of ways, but nobody has seen that either.

Also also, I totally admit that I've never seen Dirty Pair, but judging from from OPs and EDs, I totally want to. I think we can both blame the title for Dvds or even VHSes being pretty hard to find, through. :m

Gaff
06-25-2013, 11:31 AM
Ah. I've tried to watch Rahxephon a couple of times actually, but I've never yet made it to the end. Something in the middle part of the series just gets me with an overbearing sense of doom. Should really try and make more of an effort, I would like to see how it ends.

Can certainly see the problems that searching online for "Dirty Pair" would create (once saw some fanart for it in a magazine, accompanied by a letter saying "please print my Dirty Pair"...), but yeah, try to check it out man, I think you'd like it. It's a much funnier and more sophisticated show than you might think at first glance.

Regantor
06-25-2013, 04:55 PM
The ending resorts to being an eva rippoff again, I mightawise tell you. The middle is the 'best' part. It just handles impending doom and loneliness much better than the aforementioned, IMO. Also it helps if you're watching it in Japanese, because damn did ADV drop the ball on that one. Quon in particular goes from being adorably away with the fairies, to just plain snooty; A big deal considering that they also did things like have her dub the show's ending theme. But yeah. I still think all the forlorn characters, offbeat jazz and Syd Mead architecture/design make it feel really special in a weird way.

Dirty Pair; Also a problem when searching for items to buy.

On a half-related note, finally seen Redline, and it completely reminded me of the same sort of eighties zany action-comedy romp. They should make more of those. :3
