Practice for a Gothic Lolita contest.

Rubisko

Ahh, yes. SAI is by far the easiest software to create lineart in. I prefer Illustrator though, harder to learn but it gives you more options once you've learned the basics.

Both the card master and the lolita girl is clean and neat. The card master is also a very hard pose to draw *good job*. However, they seem a little bit stiff. This is where basic anatomy training takes you, time to take the next step on the path of the artist =) :

Just as I did you've probably read a ton of tutorials. Many of those tutorials probably encouraged you to use basic geometric shapes to envision what you draw; spheres, cylinders, cubes and so on. Now it's time to reflect deeper on how those shapes interact with each other to make the figure "flow".

One way to practice this is to use photos and other ppls drawings and draw a redline of how you would use the geometric shapes to describe it. When done, hide the original picture and draw your lineart based on the shapes you drew before.

Whoa, just realized that I sound like a whole bunch of philosofs, hope you can make something out of this jibberish anyway :P

Your old thread hasn't been deleted. It just got pushed back all the way to the last page. C:

Anyways, it's not bad for a first time coloring. You should really consider where your light source is coming from before you add in the shading. Right now, it just seems kind of random. Also, some of the shading felt like it was done rather fast - some parts where not shaded in when it should've been shaded in like at the hair.

As for your other artwork, you should watch your lines. Try to go for a seamless line when you ink. If you can, try to clean up your artwork too because I'm seeing a lot of marks that could have been erased.

You've got some lovely hair there, and the earing is c u t e. Still, something in this nose seems wrong to me.
Try making your shades darker. You know, not like "greyer" of the color you've chosen, but still.. dont be afraid of contrast. :P Though it might be just my laptop monitor changin the colours and I suppose this is simply the beginning of the process so not much could be said.

Slurpee
02-25-2011, 02:47 PM
Yeah I'm afriad of darker colours. I want her hair to be black but I'm not so sure to go about it. Like I know the base coulour shouldn't be the full on color black... something like that =S

Like I know the base coulour shouldn't be the full on color black... something like that =SIf you know it, then do it. It's not so bad. Use layers, put in shade and put in highlights. That's pretty much it but before that, I would suggest you clean your lines.

Regarding your poll question, start working on both. When I forced myself to go through defined steps of learning drawing, I got bored and felt hopeless. Practice whatever you like and whenever you like.. learning art is so flexible and easy; it's not like Math which requires going through the steps in order.

Huh. This was a quick coloring I did. Nothing that serious, but I sort of like it. I just couldn't think of a background.
The lineart was about 1-2 hours but I forget how long the rest took too. She's a charachter concept for some upcoming webcomic I'm still planning.

Make her 5-6 heads tall. Preferably 5 or 5 and a half, since she's a loli-ish character. I know you said it wasn't a serious pic, so I'm not gonna elaborate too much. The concept is nice, though I should ask why there's an opening in her top when that would just make her more vulnerable to attacks--especially if she's the type that's gonna be fighting. I'm not saying to not include ecchi/fanservice, but leaving an opening in that spot is a bad idea. Well, then again, so is fighting in a bikini, but that doesn't stop most fantasy artists. Ah well. You can ignore my advice on that; after all, I assume the character is loli and not moe*.

*Just in case you don't know: loli = sexual, moe = non-sexual. But some people just say loli to cover moe as well because it just sounds better.

Is visual basic an animation program?

Rio
05-19-2011, 06:42 PM
Visual Basic is a programming software that uses BASIC as it's base programming language. It's more friendly to non-programmers as it's interface is all GUI-based. It's not specifically used for animation but you can definitely string together some images in it and output an animation.

Hey, Slurp! It's been a really long time since I've had the chance to stop by here. You've been progressing a lot! :O I think what's holding you back the most in terms of coloring are your choices in hue. The color you pick for skin tends to be a little too yellowy/saturated, and I think that your shadows should incorporate more blue tones. Also, don't be afraid to do deep shadows, especially with your new Copic work! It'll really give your great lineart the pop it deserves. :)

have you tried to see this in saturated mode? the highlighting is off.
if you place a black layer turn saturation mode on for the layer you should be
able to see you picture in black and white to understand the shading better.
all you have to do to turn it back is to turn viability off.
also becareful about the paint bucket because those rough edges kills the picture

SirJimmJimm
08-02-2011, 07:47 PM
Sorry, I am bad with digital editing, so I cannot redline, but I think I can tell you two ways on how to fix the picture. Frankly, the suggestions may be a bit too drastic for your tastes. You can try them or ignore them as you please.
-The first suggestion has the assumption that the guy holding the girl is a chibi or child. If so, the fingers are too long compared to the hand. You would have to make them much stubbier, resulting in you having to redesign or omit the ring. The second suggestion for the same picture, which assumes he is older, would require you to elongate the proportions of the boy's torso and arm. If you were trying to show that the arm is foreshortened to justify that it is longer, it is still possible to do so without much erasing. However, with the earring portrayed in front of the arm, the arm doesn't appear to be reaching out as you would want.
-Ramiel is also right with all three pictures; the neck juts out a bit too much.

08-13-2011, 12:06 AM
The animation is super awesome, what did you use to make it?

As for the next picture, I agree with ego on the ribcage and skeletal structures. I strooongly suggest working on using guidelines, both for anatomy and faces/heads! You can look at which guidelines work for you (circles, lines, circles and lines, various shapes, etc etc) and practice with those. They are the most helpful thing one can use, besides references, and they'll structure your anatomy much better than just free drawing it.

Everything looks quite off keeping perspective in mind. Since it seems like the camera is angled from above, her chest should be much more inwards, shoulders higher to help with the perspective illusion (possibly to where you can't see the neck), the bottom half of the legs should be more under the thighs, and also sort of become smaller.

Also, remember to keep in mind that hair is typically really flowy and goes with gravity! lol. Since your character seems to be flying upwards, the hair should be pushed back and flying away from the head.

The arm should also be a bit longer, and also remember elbows and arm creases!

If you want to work on building perspective and stuff, you should totally just draw straight cities and landscapes without characters and post them here. It'd be cool to see how you work on them and what techniques you use to learn <:

ram
08-13-2011, 04:13 AM
that's good to know. just hope that book you bought has good info.

you used a vanishing point but didn't follow it at all.

the right placement of vanishing point should be one on the left, one on the right and one on the bottom, since that is obviously should be 3 point perspective..

what's the name of the book you bought?

Slurpee
08-13-2011, 10:43 AM
@Toast .
Yeah, I'll start on the perspective. For animation I simply used photoshop. I made the layers in SAI and just saved it as .PSD and it was just easy from there on :)

@ramiel
I thought it was 2 point perspective. Seems I still have quite a way to go. The book I got was Vanishing Point:Perspective for Comics from the Ground Up by Jason Cheeseman-Meyer

This animation isn't finished either but I still uploaded it.

Hamachi
09-04-2011, 12:43 AM
I think the pose itself is fine. With that level of foreshortening the torso-stomach section should be a lot shorter (the eye level currently looks like you're looking from the top, then at the stomach, then from the top again once you reach the legs) so I imagine it'll look fine if you resized things a bit. You have the option of changing the view to an extreme top-down one or one from the front.

Edit: Mary Jane pose for leg reference

Your coloring is pretty good, but the body shapes really offset it at times. I'd suggest picking up some anatomy practice and really stick with it for while. It's boring, but I guarantee it'll pay off and make your art look 10x better.
Right now your anatomy isn't HORRID, it's pretty good, but I know you've been around here for a while. And I'd really like to see that massive improvement boost I know you're capable of O_o.

Watch out for making the head too big! The shoulders are at different heights on the body, even if one is raised. Things are anatomically cramped. If you look closely, the entire torso is only one head tall, which is very jarring. The feet are very square-like, so maybe you could round those out?

But this also has a lot of other good things going for it. I lik the detail of the head in the treasure chest. The bone structure of that chair is a neat idea, too. The skull on top of the barrel give is a lot of attitude, and I think if might be my favorite part, haha. :)

Scarletlight
10-10-2011, 03:20 AM
Careful with the head sizes. To make it believable I'd aim for 6-8 heads high for the whole figure.
Also with the jaw line, when drawing girls I wouldn't define it completely. Leave some of it to the imagination, it will make the face look softer.
Try to leave a little space for the chin as well because that seems to be missing from this.
The pose looks really natural, a real good job there.

One final note, the leg thats bent is much longer than the straight one, careful on that.

Thats all, nice work :)

Torso short and thickand neck angle awkward (on ming ling)on the dragon the mouth is at a strange angle(though if he was chewing it would make sense). To help on the name:Chinese names are also ordinarily 3 syllables. The first is the Surname, and the second two are comprised of the hopes of the parents. For example, a girl may be named xiao mei, or small beautiful.

For that latest picture, I agree with Captain_Neko. The torso is usually 4 heads long, and she looks to be about only 2. If you put your elbows by your side, they would be aligned with your hips; So keep that in mind when your draw Full Body pictures.

To clarify my poll answer, I did not fully agree with half of my option (option #4), but I fully disagreed with the others. I do not think you should work on inking or coloring, but rather drawing in general: blocking in your shapes, defining building blocks, forms and what have you. That's what I do, over and over, and it has and does serve me well.

Obitual_Crow

I'd agree with what Sylux reasoned out about the poll so I didn't took a vote

Also with what ram said, the position of the eyes with regards to the proportions for the body you drew along with it doesn't make the eyes look too low. It's the top of her head (eyebrows and upwards) that gives the impression. The size of it makes her face look small. The indication of her hairline at an acceptable level though...I don't know if I'm right to interpret this as her hair having thick volume because your other works are pretty much okay with with that issue.

I also looked through the other images. They generally don't give me the impression that you used guidelines to draw them. I suggest you post you pictures with the guidelines intact so we could evaluate how you use them and fix the areas that cause problems. :)

Hello Slurpee:
I would like to point out that your last pic is cute and fun (since I will only be critiquing on that one) however the legs don't seem to be perportionate to each other and her right arm is set too high. Checking on myself, despite being a guy and not having man boobies, I would say that the arm extends a quarter ways down the breast, rathe than it being on top of it, as you drew it. As well, breasts are more of an urn shape than a balloon shape, which is to say that the top of the breasts aren't detailed with a line like you have, unless they are compressed to the body. Yours seem a little too round to be the later, so I would erase the top curve on her right brest and rather curve it out slightly as an s shape... but not so defined at the top... kinda like a curved b shape... wish I had my computer to show you...

Also your eyes and nose are a bit too high. the side of the face is a good indecator to eye placement. you have a nice shape of the head, which will help with this comment: The concaved part on the left side of the head is placed between the forhead and the cheek as an eye socket is concaved into the skull. Thus your eyes should be alined with that, rather than being higher than that. this will also bring the nose down. The part of the head that pulls the right side back out is your cheek (just a random fact)

I hope this was coherant and will edit if it wasn't

Today I learnt the difference between vector and bitmap images in design class. Which gets me thinking: should I do lineart in vector, or coloring in vector. Do you guys know any vector based programs?

jaidurn
01-06-2012, 12:10 PM
Illustrator is a huge vector based program, but I wouldn't recommend it for the art you're working on. I mean, vector is cool and all, and I know that Cpt. Sparky does it, but I think that you might prefer sticking with whatever you're using now. Don't let me change what you want to do. Try it for yourself and see how it works for you. You never know if it will help.

Celestial-Fox
01-07-2012, 03:49 PM
This is Sparky's thread (http://www.mangatutorials.com/forum/showthread.php?182-OFWGKTA). C: He uses Illustrator, which, like the others said, is a vector-based drawing/design program. Vector lines can be blown up to any size that you want with 0% quality loss. That's right. Many artists do choose to use Flash for their lineart because it gives that crisp, high-quality line (one that's so sharp that it's almost jagged-looking in small dimensions, like you see in Sparky's thread). However, vector coloring is a pain in the butt, so most artists take their vector lineart, export it into a raster (which is synonymous with bitmap, essentially) format, then color it in a raster program, such as Photoshop, Painter, Mangastudio, etc. Vector coloring is just extremely stiff and not very organic unless you are an absolute pro. Even then, it's just a better use of tools to do raster coloring, anyway. I mean, even vector lines aren't essential, unless you're trying to make prints the size of huge poster/bilboards. I've made prints that are three feet long and the coloring was still crisp. Granted, I don't use lineart, so it's easier to get away with. It's your choice, though. (:

But anyway! With your last picture I agree with Ged that I'm not the most savvy on SD anatomy, but I really like your interpretation of it a lot. It kinda makes me want to try it. I like her expression and the colors that you're using so far.

In the last one her legs seem very long in comparison to her upper body.

I think the faces are very cute.
If you are going for that chibi look then usually the body is 3 heads high and very small, yours are around 3 1/2 with long legs. I guess it's a stylised chibi?

The far eye is slightly taller than the one on the right. The far eye should be narrower, since it's at a 3/4 view. The mouth and nose are a little low and the nose should be slight moved to the left (so it's aligned with the chin). The wings just look like bags. Angel wings follow similiar anatomy to those of actual bird wings. Here's a link to a good wing walk-through: here (http://jjjorgie.tumblr.com/search/wings)
