okay geez

Hayashida
08-10-2012, 02:35 AM
so as it turns out trying to write a song like that finns song is harder than I thought. This is what I came up with tho im not very happy with it
http://soundcloud.com/hayashida/friendly-friends

also I found this old song, dunno if we can use it
http://soundcloud.com/hayashida/c-c-cold

jubeh
08-10-2012, 10:31 AM
Yeah first one has too much going on second one I told you I can't sing over the same chord played over and over again.

Hayashida
08-10-2012, 02:59 PM
okay I'll keep working away

Hayashida
08-13-2012, 12:34 AM
Uh I was practicing a bit and this sort of came to me so I decided to record it
http://soundcloud.com/hayashida/mutt

jubeh
08-20-2012, 12:15 PM
John you were taking too long so I wrote this song the lyrics dont mean anything ok they dont matter

http://soundcloud.com/jubeh/drown

Hayashida
08-20-2012, 02:09 PM
nice song, your voice is getting really good. It reminds me a bit of Nick Thorburn for some reason. And yeah, sorry I'm taking so long with the music. Some stuff's been going on and I can't really write anything decent right now.

jubeh
08-20-2012, 10:40 PM
You're gonna redo that whole song btw with a proper intro and stuff the chords are just C, Fm, and Gm

Hayashida
08-20-2012, 11:03 PM
Uh okay

jubeh
08-20-2012, 11:06 PM
Work hard please

Hayashida
08-22-2012, 03:01 AM
tried recording it. Tell me what you think.
http://soundcloud.com/hayashida/drown

jubeh
08-22-2012, 10:34 AM
You didn't have to emulate the finger picking also when am I supposed to come in at.

Hayashida
08-22-2012, 02:16 PM
There's two bars before the start. Is it alright though? Do you want me to change anything?

edit: so like, there's the first chord being strummed and then it goes to the picking pattern for one bar and then that's where you'd come in.

jubeh
08-22-2012, 02:26 PM
Can you make the guitar less toppy it cuts through everything.

Hayashida
08-22-2012, 02:29 PM
ehh toppy? Like it's too loud?

jubeh
08-22-2012, 02:46 PM
Too loud and trebly

Hayashida
08-22-2012, 10:32 PM
http://soundcloud.com/hayashida/drown

Is that any better?

jubeh
08-22-2012, 10:47 PM
Actually redo the whole thing

-Have the drums kick in right at the start I hate when they just start whenever because it never matches up to the tension of the vocals
-After "now singing is the only thing I can do" add two extra bars with the Gm and Fm. You can put a little guitar part here but the idea is to have like a little break like in the KETTLES' "Do too much today."
-Don't fingerpick but don't get too crazy it should be mellow like "Andrew pick up the phone."

Edit still going through old music:

This one isn't super old but I really like it idk if anyone has written a song about hating being a power ranger before.

http://soundcloud.com/jubeh/buttheadyouth

Also idk if I ever showed you this since you did the guitar stuff

http://soundcloud.com/jubeh/robotsongbeta

jubeh
08-28-2012, 12:12 PM
John you wanna do some covers for practice and fun

I recorded across the universe with some random backing track for fun. I was trying all hard to be serious but on the last take I was like fuck it and just did like karaoke bullshit which was way more fun. My voice keeps cracking and it makes me laugh but it was so fun to sing I recorded it anyway.

http://soundcloud.com/jubeh/acrosstheuniverse

Hayashida
08-28-2012, 12:44 PM
Haha yeah that would be cool. I like that cover you did, by the way it sounds fun. Also that robot song beta thingy is cool whats going on here

jubeh
08-28-2012, 03:15 PM
Thats the song you said probably sucked.

I wanna record Take On Me do you think you can do it.

Hayashida
08-28-2012, 03:26 PM
Lol. I can always give it a try.

jubeh
08-28-2012, 05:20 PM
Also do Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol, and Hey There Delilah

jubeh
08-29-2012, 12:22 AM
Btw just do the guitars man no need to do drums and stuff unless u really want to

Hayashida
08-29-2012, 05:43 PM
I might just do guitars for chasing cars and hey there delilah but I kind of want to do a proper version of take on me

jubeh
08-29-2012, 11:11 PM
Do what you want

jubeh
08-30-2012, 05:46 PM
While I said do what you want before I'd also like you to do it quickly and not take forever.

Hayashida
08-31-2012, 01:13 AM
You know there's things I've got to do right. I don't always have time to work on stuff like this.

jubeh
08-31-2012, 01:17 AM

Hayashida
08-31-2012, 01:18 AM

Decent sounding:
Southern Christ (http://soundcloud.com/jubeh/southernchrist)
Hollar (http://soundcloud.com/jubeh/hollar)
Drown (http://soundcloud.com/hayashida/drown)
Butthead Youth (http://soundcloud.com/jubeh/buttheadyouth)
Ill (http://soundcloud.com/jubeh/ill)
Then What's the Point (http://soundcloud.com/jubeh/thenwhatsthepoint)
Blurry Kingdom (http://soundcloud.com/jubeh/blurrykingdom)

Embarrassingly performed but can be salvaged:
Bitter Pan Flute (http://soundcloud.com/jubeh/bitterpanflute)
Another Year of Being Lonely (http://soundcloud.com/jubeh/anotheryearofbeinglonely)

jubeh
09-01-2012, 10:42 AM

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZydAsXzri3I

Hayashida
09-10-2012, 12:53 AM
yeah geez he does look like lennon. And naw, I tried coming up with some stuff earlier, but nothing really became of it. Gonna try again tomorrow after I do some stuff for work

Hayashida
09-10-2012, 12:32 PM
Hmm I tried coming up with a 1 chord riff earlier
http://soundcloud.com/hayashida/riff

jubeh
09-10-2012, 12:33 PM
Thats actually pretty cool. We need an explosive chorus tho like some crazy noise.

Hayashida
09-10-2012, 12:42 PM

Hey after 6 months of failing at guitar I might finally be able to play The Passenger. On that note I hate F barre with the passion of the gods

Hayashida
09-10-2012, 11:03 PM
you gotta strengthen your wee little fingers to get that f barre chord

jubeh
09-11-2012, 11:29 AM
Hey john maybe that could be an intro or something I'm having trouble finding a way to sing over it.

Hayashida
09-11-2012, 06:02 PM
Okay. I'll record something either later today or tomorrow and you can see if you can sing over it

jubeh
09-11-2012, 06:24 PM

09-11-2012, 06:27 PM
martin light for me plz

Also what guitars do you guys play? I bought the electro-acoustic with the best reviews I could find off the internet because I'm a newbie. And if I wanted to move up a notch from "noob guitar" to "cheap guitar", what would you recommend? I want to stick with acoustics or electro-acoustics for now because you don't need amplifiers and I prefer playing the sort of music that's written for acoustic, but I might consider getting an electric in future because I dig dreampop and surf rock.

Hayashida
09-11-2012, 06:49 PM
man thats rad I wish we had those around here. And uhh I usually play a Hagström Super Swede. Tho I bought a cheap Squire Jaguar a while ago.

Hayashida
09-13-2012, 11:15 AM
maybe if you listen to some lo fi punk music shit you'll get in the mood to just belt it out, na'meen?

So I was dicking around with the double harmonic (arabic) scale today and wrote this. I think it sounds pretty cool what do you think? All on high E string. The short bit at the start is probably a copy of something I heard in a film or something

0-3-4/5\4-3-0---0-3-4-5/7-10/11\10-7-5\4/5-7/10-11-10\7-5-4\3-0

I kind of based it off the intro to Killing an Arab by The Cure, which is

7/8\7-5-7---7-8/11-8-7/8\7-5

Man I feel like an idiot, I got the intervals of the double harmonic scale wrong when composing that arabic thing, which might explain why it sounds a bit odd.

Hayashida
09-27-2012, 06:56 PM
Have you listened to Orange and Lemons or The Gentle Isolation?

now I have. The gentle isolation reminds me a bit of Ivy.

so this chasing cars thing is the same 4 chords the entire song so I just recorded the basic part of it and figured you could record the vocals and then send the vocal track to me and then I'll add more to the song.

Like I really like toyko karon koron. I just dont know if that kind of sound is possible without a band.

Actually I just need something fast. Our music is too slow and low energy. Need something high energy with a good bpm like a foxy song or something.

Hayashida
10-03-2012, 01:03 AM
i came up with a riff but I think its too slow for what u have in mind so im gonna keep working but here it is anyway

I am not a musician and have no musical talent at all but I'm not a fan of the singer. Just sounds like he's forcing his voice to go lower than it normally does. Just doesn't match with the music IMO. Like the music tho.

Nyarlathotep
10-09-2012, 01:38 AM
Ah, I see - thanks for the feedback =)

jubeh
10-09-2012, 01:54 AM
Yeah I'm not digging the voice. You and your brother have gotten a lot better, though. Your improvement really shows.

Do you know if your singer is taking any vocal lessons? He probably just needs practice and a little guidance.

Also your logo is really cool.

Nyarlathotep
10-10-2012, 02:05 AM
Thanks Jubeh!

Yeah, he's not taking any lessons at the moment - we're still kinda getting the material down so there's room for improvement I guess.

Regarding the logo, it came from our other guitarist, who's an art school graduate. He sketched it out, tried to get his buddy who specialized in logo design to vectorize it for us, and eventually I just ended up tracing it in Inkscape. Welp.

Here's my latest cover! My voice keeps getting lamer and lamer, I wonder if it's from lack of practice or if I'm developing vocal cord polyps? Aaah! Anyway...

http://cruel.angelthesis.com/yukie_westernsky.mp3

Any tips on how I can improve, from all you talented peeps? My range is bad and I think I sound flat but I dunno how to remediate that :(

jubeh
01-01-2013, 04:39 PM
It sounds cool but the intensity of your voice doesn't match the tension built up by the instruments at around like 1:30. It sounded like your voice was getting tired. The tired voice thing happens a couple times throughout the recording so I'm going to assume this wasn't the first take and you had been singing a lot before because that happens to me all the time.

Also this has nothing to do with actual singing, but you should edit out all the breaths in the recording because they are distracting.

Yukie
01-01-2013, 05:06 PM
My voice does get tired! Hmm, it was multiple takes, but not more than 3 times I think and only for specific parts where I reaaaally royally messed up the lyrics XDD (I like to pretend I know how to sing in Korean, but I really don't...)

About the tired voice, you think exercises would help before singing? I never really believed in them, but now I'm open to try just about anything hahaha.

And good point about the breaths! :D I never thought of that before, thanks!

jubeh
01-01-2013, 05:13 PM
You just need to sing a lot and make sure you watch what you drink

Before I proceed with a project i wanted to ask...

You can unsolder a pick up ground wire for a guitar/bass and resolder the wire to a pot without any problem right? Aka it doesn't need to be placed as carefully as Indiana jones in the temple with the bag of sand?

Also, does that work for the other wires as well?

This seemed like the best place for a question like this...

Hey guys, i was thinkin' about picking up an electric guitar and i was wondering what kinda stuff you'd recommend to get with it and what brand and what not.

Hayashida
02-13-2013, 05:33 PM
if ur just learning how 2 play, don't spend a butt load of money. but dont get something super cheap too cuz then it will be shitty and ur gonna not want to play it. If you want to get an electric, go for something like Epiphone or Squire. They're subsidiary companies of Gibson and Fender. So u can get like an SG or a Stratocaster or something like that for cheaper basically.

Other than that, u need a patch chord to connect to an amp. Also as for an amp, just look for a small one at whatever place ur going to buy ur guitar. it doesn't have to cost more than 100 bucks really. Also some picks are good I guess and maybe some beginner technique books and shit like that.

A lot of places offer a deal for beginners where u can get an amp, guitar and patch chord for like less than 200 bucks so keep an eye out for that or ask if they have any package deals.

Brand doesn't matter because after you give up in like a month or two its just a piece of wood that gathers dust. I feel like my gibson gathered more dust than my knock-off, though, but it didn't really have a finish so maybe it just looked that way.

You'll want to make sure to get a stand because if it's going to sit in your room unused it should at least look nice, and that way when people see it its like a conversation starter. Every once in a while you might want to pick it up, strum it, and realize you are shit so you'll want to replace the strings every few months. When you go to the store make sure you ask for super slinkies, because then people will think you are cool. Make sure to walk around the store looking at pedals and amps like you intend to buy them before you walk out. That way people know you're serious. Also most important: when you see a guy playing guitar better than you, make sure you act like you're not impressed.

Sylux
02-13-2013, 05:46 PM
Get super heavy strings, they're best for brutal metal. Also make sure your guitar looks like a can opener. I'd suggest the B.C. Rich Warlord or Warlock.

Well, I'll retain pre-med status, since you can be pre-med with any major. You just have to take 40 extra credits of biochem classes. I'm just questioning if I can handle music full-time, since I'm a wimp and brass instruments are not for wimps.

Alright I'm legit proud of this one. I put a good 3-4 hours into this song and I like how it turned out, so I wanted to share it with you guys. Unfortunately, FL Studio is giving me problems with Edirol Orchestral now, so I can't do much to rework the piece. Hopefully the Miroslav Philharmonik VSTi will treat me better and I can rework Shkaa to put in new parts and mix up the existing parts, all with even better sampling and articulation than Edirol.

Hayashida
04-02-2013, 12:26 AM
its been a while since ive tried making any kind of 8-bit song so this sounds kind of shitty. ive called it hound but if you want to use it for anything else thats fine obviously or you dont even have to use it cuz its kinda crappy. i dont have a melody for it yet either so this would just be a WIP if you like it at all.

https://soundcloud.com/hayashida/hound

edit: ugh i listened to what we had before and even tho that was bad it still sounded better than this

jubeh
04-02-2013, 12:32 AM
That's really good man. You've improved a lot since we last worked on this game.

So that'll work for hound.

Idk if knowing about the characters helps you at all but I'll outline them really quick anyway.

Johnny Sidestory - Punch monk that is essentially a hipster buddha. If he does anything its usually for ironic reasons.

Steve Sidestory - Became so angry it literally killed him tho he was reborn in the Hatewood and is I guess kind of a zombie who can stretch his limbs and stuff.

Aife - Hound's girlfriend and guardian. She is the only one in the story that worked hard to become good at punching because the rest of the guys are naturally gifted. She can punch super fast.

Hayashida
04-02-2013, 12:44 AM
eh you like it? Well that's good I guess. You still want a melody though right?

And ya i think those background stories will help, thanks.

jubeh
04-02-2013, 01:36 AM
The song is fine like it is actually. If you do add a melody it shouldn't obstruct the song.

Hayashida
04-02-2013, 01:40 AM
ok. ill mess around and see if i can add anything good but if not ill just leave it

edit: that hound song inspired me to make like a song like it but with real instruments so here it is. its p short but idk james if u want to yell some vocals over it that'd be coo

Had a hard time implementing the transition song but I made it work because I like it a lot. Do you like the current character select song or do you want to redo that one too?

Also no need to redo the intro song its good, unless you have some way to make it better.

Hayashida
04-10-2013, 02:29 PM
I'll try redoing the character selection one. And idk about the intro one. The only thing I could think to do to it to improve it would be to make it 8-bit to fit with the rest of the music

I haven't done a lengthy metal track in quite some time. I spent about half an hour setting up the instruments, and then 4 hours composing the piece. I did a bit of post-processing, but to be honest I'm not quite sure what I did. I just used a bunch of filters in FL. John, I tried to take your advice and I did some new things with the actual song structure, but not much. I'm still trying to get the hang of all this again.

EDIT:

I think the filters kind of killed it.

Sounds alright, felt like it was a bit lacking in frequency variation though. I'm not a composer by any means, but I listen to a lot of metal.
It was a very flat piece, if you can have more deep drum sounds in there and higher pitch guitar riffs it would do wonders for it.

EDIT: Also, I think putting a double pedal in would be sick if you don't have it in there already. The tempo needs to pick up a bit to bring it to life.

But that's just my take on it. Also, the third link was the best of the three. Hope that helped somewhat.
