Why didn't I think of that. I've been using Maracas.
Nyarlathotep
02-27-2012, 07:03 PM
@Bacon: My first suggestion would be to get a metronome and learn to play to a click - Rock Band will give you some experience with this, actually, so that's kind of nice.
On the web, there's about a million different options - http://www.metronomeonline.com/ is the first Google hit, but there's plenty more.
As far as actually playing goes, the key is to have a good grip and relax as much as possible.

But I mean why would I ever need that note I'll just never ever use it.

Tsathoggua and I did another session of Rock School over the last few weeks... our show was on the 11th and the YouTube videos are finally up.
This is the last song we did: Mr. Crowley (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=023VNbdOOX0&list=UU5QPi5qJMt1eddfTceKpujA&index=15&feature=plcp)- the other 5 songs we played should show up on the bottom thingy, I think.
We managed to convince our mom to play the organ intro to the song, which sounded pretty badass :P

05-23-2012, 02:15 AM
I just want something with one guitar -- drop all the layers of shit. One guitar at a time. No keyboard, or synth or anything like that. Do something cool with the guitar. Mess with effects. I want to hear something I haven't heard before. If it's 4/4 with bar chords Im gonna poop on it.

Okay guys, learning guitar and I have a music theory question. How do the particular notes in, say, a G chord combine to make it a G rather than a G minor or E or whatever? The notes in your standard beginner G chord (the only one I know, lol) are G, B, D, G, B, G - why does that make a G?
Other chords confuse me even more. How do C, E, G, C, E make a C? How do E, C, E, A sharp, B, and E make an E chord, and why does it make E minor instead if the A sharp is substituted for G?
I suspect there's a simple answer, but I haven't been able to find one through quick googling.

The notes in a chord come from the scale of the note of the chord you're playing. Like a G chord comes from the notes of a G Major scale. A G minor chord comes from the G minor scale. The chords are based on the sound starting from the base note of the chord. If you start with a C note, the notes that follow after to make a C major chord are E and G. If you change the E to an E minor, it becomes a C minor chord because of the sound of it. Idk if that answers what you're asking.
jubeh
07-02-2012, 05:28 PM
Um a chord is constructed of notes from the same scale and its different depending on the chord and scale.
A G major chord is G B D which is the first, third, and fifth notes of the g major scale right. The extra G B D you play are just the same notes in different octaves so they sound nice together.
So for C its the same situation.
For minor chords its actually based on the position of the note in the scale. Chords built starting on the first, fourth and fifth notes of the scale are always major. Chords built starting on the second, third and sixth notes of the scale are always minor.
Uh for E minor do you know about relative minors.
Edit: john u suck

Okay, I half understand your explanations but bear in mind I have as much music training as a small monkey. What exactly is a scale for a note and how do you go about working out which notes are in a scale for a particular root note? Or is it just memorisation?
EDIT: I mean I know a scale is just a collection of notes I'm not that terrible
jubeh
07-02-2012, 05:47 PM
All chords are based on their major diatonic scale.
Edit: This guide is really good

Listen at ur level just find out what chords are in the key you are playing in and then go to town
Delphinus
07-02-2012, 05:58 PM
Man I don't just want to learn the instrument I want to understand how it all fits together and why Stairway to Heaven sounds rad and some dude hitting a guitar with a rock sounds shit
Because really learning to play the guitar would be a matter of dexterity, muscle memory, and accumulating techniques, like any other instrument but music theory lets you compose and rework and all the really cool stuff

Okay Jubeh I realised why I was confused about intervals even though they're simple. I didn't know there wasn't a flat/sharp between E/F and B/C. Working out major and minor scales is actually easy from internet information I was just missing that vital piece of the puzzle

Hey is having my 3rd or 1st finger on the 4th string better for playing A major? 1st is kinda easier but 3rd makes it easier to switch to E and Am.
Likewise for G - should I use my 3rd instead of 2nd finger on the 6th string? It makes that chord harder but switching chords easier.
Hayashida
07-11-2012, 01:45 PM
For A it should be your third finger, and I use my third finger on the sixth string for an open G chord.

okay I'll keep working
jubeh
07-16-2012, 02:47 PM
I can't sing over like the same note being repeated over and over again because my voice isn't really dynamic so more chord changes would help. Also generally faster stuff.
Hayashida
07-16-2012, 02:48 PM
how many bpm approximately were you thinking of
jubeh
07-16-2012, 02:50 PM

Hayashida
07-16-2012, 02:56 PM
uh right

I've convinced myself this song is better than it actually is. I tried to a write a song that my younger self would have written and I also wanted to experiment with falsetto since I used to be not able to sing loudly in it but now I can somehow. Turn your volume up the quality is shit.
