Hmm, seems like you're really fleshing out that character. Are you going to (or are already) use her for something?
Wow, Matt! I see alot of improvement here @_@ Great work! Your characters look alot more realistic now, but still so cuuuute <3
03-19-2013, 04:28 PM
It's all loking really good! That train scene is very cool! :)
03-19-2013, 07:33 PM
I love the cuteness in a realistic style :D and yeah, that train scene is awesome, please complete it :P
@Rio - Illy's a major character in a novel I'm doing.
@Linz - My goal is realism that's cute.
@JJ & Demon - I've yet to finish a whole scene. Maybe I'll make that my first.
Also, since I've been listening to the song in the trailer for Transistor all day, I thought I'd do a quick sketch of it before bed.
03-21-2013, 07:43 PM
Awesome art! I, too, really like the perspective on the train scene. I also like the colors you used in first image.

I want a finished piece, so i can fangirl more. yes.
Nice update, will we be seeing a finished version of it? ;DDD
@Blue Dragon & Scanten - Thanks both.
@Bya - Maybe sometime soon.
@Linz - Eventually.
Today's Groupboard doodle:
Pretty redhaired Scot? It's Linz.
Wow O_O. You coloured it! Looks absolutely lovely, Matt. LOVE the hair 8D You're getting soooo good at anatomy too. Well done!! <33333
03-29-2013, 08:46 PM
That hair turned out really good.
That's probably one of my favourite pieces from you, and not just because it's Linz.
03-30-2013, 06:24 AM
The hair looks amazing!
My very being brings out the artistic genius in everyone. /ego.
03-30-2013, 10:59 AM
hair by you is always awesome! lol. idunno how you do it but the strands are always so naturally drawn as if they really grew out of ur characters hair heheh :3
lovely! *wants some more
03-30-2013, 01:02 PM
Oh my goodness! This is awesome!! I love how you did her face o-o and her outfit is freaking awesome!!
@Bunnyvoid - I don't do a whole ton on the hair. I just block in the base color, then draw increasingly thin strands in random shades of the same color and add the highlights last.
Old pictures I don't remember posting.
03-30-2013, 10:37 PM
I really really really like the warrior Linz piece :D and those cats, they are so cute! :D
@_@ kitties! Gahhh so cuuuteeeee. Excellent work with the quick sketches, and I know how hard it is to draw your own cat. They. Do. Not. Stand. Still. Grahah!!
So like, is it okay to post the same piece in both AA and CC?
Seems MT put artifacts all over the embedded picture. Direct link. (http://i.imgur.com/DdbJ9Y4.jpg)
EDIT: Alternative title: "Leaf Brush Abuse"
05-08-2013, 01:36 PM
Yes, it's fine. If you want crits you go to CC. If you want us to tell you how super awesome you are and how beautifully colorful your art is, you post here. :-)
Love the trees and the sense of perspective. <: Also, yes, Sylux is correct. <:
05-10-2013, 09:37 AM
Interesting perspective c: nice characters and concepts c:
A helmet from Skyrim.
I figured I should do something other than fantasy, but I didn't want to do something too totally different from my dark-skinned girls with stupidly long hair.
Therefore, Huey Freeman.
05-20-2013, 07:48 AM
This looks really great, Matt!! I like the pose; it turned out very nice :)
05-20-2013, 02:01 PM
Looks excellent. You need to draw Riley Aka young reezy aka Riley Escobar.
05-20-2013, 08:43 PM
Oh my, what an awesome character O_O that 'fro
Erm. Yeah. About this whole art thing...
I'm actually still doing it and I'm tired of watching my peers surpass me. So let's see if I can get at least a sketch per day going.
Practice shading the non-amateur way.
EDIT: Day two.
I'm an amateur at non-amateur shading.
09-17-2013, 08:54 PM
Ooo, I really like this! She's beautiful!! :)
10-16-2013, 11:15 AM
It's always good to come back and see how you've progressed, Matt. Your thread's cracking and I like your most recent one. How long did it take you?
ooooooooooo~ Nice shading indeed! Lovely to see the progression of your art!
Two months in between posts? Hm.
I can't remember how long the previous picture took me, nor can I remember how long this one took:
This is Naomi, the protagonist in the story I did for NaNoWriMo (I finished for once this year).
For comparison, this is how I drew her two years ago:
12-02-2013, 04:23 PM
That first one is looking gorgeous!
12-12-2013, 03:47 AM
Your drawings are very realistic and precise ^^
12-13-2013, 10:11 PM
Biohero looks wicked! And is Naomi finished? I feel you're not quite done. :)
12-22-2013, 06:39 PM
Wow, Naomi has really matured between those two years :O
I tried to reproduce a style I like -- the one they used in the art for Bastion and Transistor, but upon further examination, I realized that Bastion and Transistor's artist never left an area unshaded or unhighlighted, whereas I left massive blanks and generally don't know color theory, or how light and shadow work near as well as she does. Of course, I plan to change that.
Naomi seems to be aging with me. At one point, I would have worried that that made her a Sue, but I've grown past that. Progress, I tell you.
Lastly, here are some mermaids trying to kill each other. Also, the presence of female nipples makes this thread officially NSFW. Achievement unlocked, possibly?
I LOVE A GOOD SET OF NIPPLES AT 4 IN THE MORNING.
Seriously, I like this pic alot. It has a dynamic to it and the anatomy is p. good! Some errors here and there but overall I really like it.
ALSO! If you don't want your whole thread NSFW, then just put this pic in a spoiler and label it NSFW. Just a tip!
01-09-2014, 06:12 AM
Mermaid fight! woo, that's so awesome! great job with all of the poses in this one, they are placed well together and make quite a lovely picture! Keep it up.
For a male artist, I don't draw boobs much. I'm gonna try to remedy that and get as good as my peers (read: Sutari, Iccy, Linz, etc.). Therefore, I'll keep the whole thread NSFW.
An attempt at drawing Sierra, a character I've been drawing over the years since about four years ago.
One from Posemaniacs and three from imagination. Among the three from imagination is a second, slightly better attempt at Sierra. Also, more boobs (meaning, NSFW).
Lastly, a girl on stairs.
01-18-2014, 12:13 PM
Nice. I like the expressions and the kind of figures you are now using. Either the first or the last is probally my favorate of the bunch.
01-19-2014, 04:38 PM
Nice anatomy c: I always like it when people pay attention to the anatomy :3
I just got two anatomy books: Loomis's Figure Drawing for All It's Worth and Valerie L. Winslow's Classic Human Anatomy: The Artist's Guide to Form, Function, and Movement. The latter looks more like an A&P book, which has been helpful for work as well as art. It's even got all the correct terminology for pretty much every muscle and bone in the entire body, coupled with accurate anatomical art. Now when the doctor dictates, "thumbing the T8," or "pain in the thoracic spiny group," I know what he's talking about.
Webcomic/story characters, drawn four days apart with marginal improvement:
Failed sketch where I tried to draw all three protagonists to scale.
I feel like I'm moving out of that awkward transitional phase between anime and semirealism, and now everyone I draw doesn't look like they're squinting. Also, I drew a male character.
01-31-2014, 11:26 PM
Hum. Definately digging the more realistic designs. Suits your more three-dimensional drawing style quite well.
Good job me'ol chap.
Need moar colour though! >:U I liek ur colour.
02-03-2014, 02:58 PM
Charles's design is pretty cool :) I like his hat
@Reg - They can only get better from here, I hope.
@Linz - Uhm. How's, uh, grayscale? vv
@JJ - The end-goal is to have him actually pull off fedoras and trilbies.
Comparison from 2012. (http://fc04.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2012/152/e/f/kasey_in_a_bikini_by_boriol-d51g6yo.png)
Comparison from 2013. (http://fc02.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2013/260/1/9/biohero_by_boriol-d6mpw5t.png)
I'm not sure how I actually get better at all despite frequent hiatuses, but the longer I procrastinate, the farther Iccy, Sutari, Cype, Tay, and the rest of you get ahead of me. I'm a couple days from being 20 now, and I started posting art here at 14. I'm far too old to be stuck where I am. I'm gonna study and get awesome, and I'll become one of those ridiculously good artists. Hold me to that.
02-21-2014, 02:17 AM
YOU ARE ONLY ABOUT TO HIT 20?!?!? D8<
If you keep at it from now on, by the time you reach my current age you will be Godly
Well, that's what I'm hoping for. I wouldn't mind having godly art.
Meanwhile, here's a mermaid picture that I'll stick in the CC after I make it colorful.
Slightly NSFW because boobs.
Oh, and some yuri, because I don't draw nearly enough of this even though I want to.
Moderately NSFW because boobs and yuri.
And have a durr:
And a face as well:
In case that's not enough, this guy in a beanie with a beard, whom I'll call Will.
Stuff for February 26:
Some woman in a bikini that didn't turn out at all like the reference photo:
And yeah, I'll add more as I draw more. The day's not over yet (least not in EST).
02-26-2014, 09:35 PM
Your past two posts have been AWESOME!! Beautiful deer and the profile below it is just great! The guy with the beard looks like Jesse from Breaking Bad. This last girl is very pretty :) I love her face!
I don't see the Jesse resemblance myself, but my brother said it looked like him too, so maybe I just haven't watched enough Breaking Bad (I'm on season 2 and I already consider it the best TV show I've ever seen).
Well, keeping up with the art. Here's a girl. Her boobs were referenced, but everything else is from imagination. NSFW not because of boobs, which are covered, but because there's female genitalia present.
February 28 now, improved Will the beanie guy based on Iccy's help and made him my avatar:
And some more NSFW Groupboard stuff, Naomi at a chopping block:
New day, new art. Here's a sketch of the girl who used to be my avatar, just in different clothes:
Today's first sketchbook page:
More on the way.
And some GB stuff:
My brother was looking at my recent art and comparing it to my old stuff, and he asked me what would happen if I tried drawing default anime style again. So I did this:
03-02-2014, 06:41 PM
I really really like your stuff matt! And you sure have been improving a lot from your first sketches (I've been browsing a bit of your work)
From this particular thread, I personally enjoy very much all of it, but particularly your sketches. The one of the girl sitting on top of a rock (I believe it's a rock) in the woods, the girl on top of the train scene, the last three of the guy doing grafitty, the other guy with the rifle and that anime girl, and so on. They impress me because they're just sketches but they already feel very real. I would like to see the finished version of both scenes though, the one of the train and the one of the girl in the woods.
Thanks for commenting. I'll put some more work into one or both of those. I'll need to learn backgrounds someday, at any rate.
On the quality of sketches, I do feel like they have more energy than the stuff I polish a bit more. I'm getting a book in the mail soon that should help with that (it's called Force or something).
Here's two girls I drew in five minutes each, if I recall right.
03-03-2014, 01:46 AM
Very nice for 5 minutes :) They're very pretty!! The hair is very dynamic!
Cross-post from my critique thread, some more characters from users on r/fantasywriters:
And last, a self-portrait:
It's cold in my house. I'm wearing gloves too.
03-08-2014, 04:23 PM
It's always cool to see artists draw varying ages and facial structure. I really like your sketches :) Keep it up!
I'ma post more stuff here for the day.
The mascot for a local restaurant, Big Boy.
His fashion sense can probably be explained by his 1940s origin.
Some harpy girl, NSFW because nips.
Twitch Plays Pokemon picked May as their character, and proceeded to make her a schizophrenic who uses said schizophrenia to pretty much take over the world.
Yay for headcanon. Here's May (or as far as TPP is concerned, "A").
Got another one done today:
The thing about this one is, the TPP Reddit community seems inclined to cast A as a complete sociopath who only wants to take over the world, which makes her kinda boring, and much more a villain than an antihero. All I did here really was give her more than one emotion.
And one more for today:
Naomi on GB, NSFW because boobs:
03-26-2014, 09:13 PM
I really like the coloring style you use when you draw digitally :)
03-28-2014, 05:26 AM
Ur drive to get better is really payin off. Can already see much improvement
04-03-2014, 07:03 AM
WORKIN' OUUUUUUUT YEEEEEEEEEEEEEAH
And some... other girl. I tend to draw really thick arms if I don't do guidelines first.
Edit: more Rosa.
Here's Naomi chained up in a dungeon because she committed treason. She's naked, so NSFW.
If you really wanna be a Pokemon master, you can't take bath breaks.
Tried out a coloring style that's supposed to be faster, in which I completely skip the line stage and go straight to blocking out colors. It really is a lot faster.
Also slightly NSFW is some mermaid yuri:
NSFW for yuri and mild nudity; colored version of the mermaid picture from May 3:
05-07-2014, 09:18 AM
Looking good. Love the perspective on Rosa.
You kept your promise on the red hair for the mermaid, too. *v*
I'll draw more yuri someday, but for now, Kasey.
Oh, and Rosa:
Also, some girl.
06-01-2014, 01:55 PM
You working on any actual comic projects or anything like that, Matt? You always seem to have really charming, dusty sort of character designs laying around (Like that girl with the grenade), but we never seem to see much more of them. >_>
