View Full Version : Oblivion

So I'm playing Oblivion. Is pretty adictive, but until now the style doesn't charm my so far.

Like took me hours to make a hot character (female) to play, and after that all the desitions were heavy and important (class, attributes, etc). And the mechanic is cool (is not amazing, because I actually hate how you play spells in the game), but the style, the art and the world, I can't like all these things, like everyone is mixed, there are no social relevance between races and everything looks weird (the plains look like glowing and the characters are ugly).

I'm playing the Xbox 360 version.

TES used to have amazing writing, story, and art direction. I think TES may well have been the most interesting and creative fantasy setting ever depicted in a video game. The amount of lore and stuff around Morrowind and Daggerfall is simply amazing and awesome.

And then Oblivion came out and ruined it forever.
Fuck Oblivion, and fuck Skyrim (Moar like The Elder's Balls 69: Anal-Rim, amirite?)

You can skip ahead to episode 7, but from that point on don't skip a single episode. The saga of Dongs "REO" Speedwagon is the greatest epic of our time.

I will still buy Anal-Rim, I do not care how shitty it is.

Oblivion is not a great game, even ignoring the amazing things that came before it. At best it is an okay game. The quests - with the exception of the Dark Brotherhood questline and some parts of the Thieves' Guild - are banal and boring. The set pieces are uninspired and repetitive. The combat is not nearly enough to carry an RPG when the plot and writing is so sub-par, and worst of all the levelling system is broken in such a way that, at best, it will rob you of any sense of achievement and, at worst, will completely ruin any possible fun.

i didnt mind the leveling system that much, you picked the skills you would use most and only leveled by using those skills, they just used the same one as morrowind but just made it harder to leve up insanely fast, you cant use money to level by training skills as the limit is 5 skills per level and the cost of training was very high, you cant level by taking a random misc/minor skill you were never intending to use and just constantly using it until you leveled up like you could in morrowind, in morrowind if you wanted to level fast you would just get a lot of money which wasnt very hard, i mean they left a key to a greater houses vault in someones clothes drawer and made it so you didnt get in trouble for taking it, you then spent all that money training skills.

Morrowind did not wind up with Bandits in Daedric Armor. There was leveled loot and enemies in Morrowind, but not nearly to the degree of Oblivion. There's never any sense of accomplishment in Oblivion because the enemies scale with you at all times, items too. So you never seem to be more powerful because most actions take the same amount of time at level 1 as at level 30.

not all the enemies level with you, the bandits only level in the sense of their armor and weapons, the monsters changed, rats became wolves, wolves became timber wolves timber wolves became mountain lion, daedra leveled up really well, the bandits leveling up their armor i think is a good thing, it would be so stupid if once you reached a high level you killed things in one hit, the armor and weapons also gives you money which is a lot harder to come by in oblivion than in morrowind, and their is a lot more achievment in killing a daedroth and spider daedra than you do a tiny scamp runt. By high levels you should be killing things a lot easier because you get better weapons, not just in the sense of getting daecric weapons but you can enchant weapons and armor e.g enchant your amor to give you a lot more strength or as a mage you can have more magicka, absorb magicka anything. The only monsters that really pose a threat to you at really high level are goblins because they actually do level with you.

I believe Liches and some Daedra (Xivilaiu) level too, no?

I've been playing the Nehrim mod for Oblivion - it fixes several things that were wrong with Oblivion...namely, the leveling thing. Monsters have fixed levels, which, though it means that I spent a lot of time playing the 'You can't drink any more potions right now' game with Mr. Giant Motherfucking Bear and friends, also means that I can go back to noob-land and rofl-stomp things.

Nehrim's story isn't too bad either - there aren't any stupid-ass portals you have to go into, anyway, and it takes you to a whole lot of different locations (at one point I ended up in the dwarven afterlife - apparently not too hard to get to?). I'm not really sure about the dialogue, since it's all in German (with subtitles). Many things about the game remind me of Morrowind, actually.

It also adds more crafting skills, has its own leveling system, and some other stuff - if you wanted to like Oblivion, but got bored quickly, I'd definitely recommend it.

I've heard good things about Nehrim. Supposedly it's like the lovechild of Gothic and TES, although it still, I understand, has some of the shitty issues related to the terrible engine of Oblivion.

Sadly I've never actually played Gothic 1 or 2 myself, and I understand that 3 is so bad as to cause cancer.

Could be - both Gothic and TES games share the very special feature of crashing all the time - and Nehrim lives up to that legacy, no doubt. Good thing I'm addicted to the quicksave key, because loading any new area seems to have a 85% success rate...

gothic 2 was amazing although its controls were so awkward o-o but yeah gothic 3 was kind of bad, they basically made 2 factions, rebels and orcs and regardless of who you picked you had to do most of the same quests because the rebels would say "go gain the orcs trust"

for some reason 1 is like £18.99 on steam gothic 2 is like £8.99 and yet you can get 1, 2 and 3 for 19.99 O_o it makes no sense 4 is on there too but im not sure if my computer would handle it

have any of you plaued risen? its another gothic game but its on the xbox as well

Gothic 3 was bad, sorry, it was Gothic 4 I was thinking of that the general consensus over at SA is "Fill a sock with rocks and smash it into your genitals. Congrats, you have now approximated the Gothic 4 experience for a fraction of the cost!"

So I have played enought to know that is not good, is adictive, but is not good.

There are a lot of bugs, the gameplay is retarded, the teleport around the map is awful (the idea of a epic fantastic story is the epic journey, not the teleport between city's) and yeah, leveling up is awful and winning money is pretty slow and is not balanced with the level up.

01-27-2011, 09:37 PM
._. if you think fast travel is awful simple DONT USE IT, why do you think leveling up is awful and why do you think the game play is awful

01-27-2011, 10:14 PM
I use it because the game force you to go to every location on the map. There is no guide about what should you do in which moment so is open, and thats cool but it's kill the epic journey (even GTA is open, but it make restrictions so you have the feeling of improvement).

The level up is unbalanced, you level up to fast, but you win money to slow. If you level up you can have better spells, but you need money to buy them, so you shouldn't level up if you don't have the money or you are going to fight strongest enemies and you are going to still have low money to buy better spells. The game should gave you a equal balance between money you can make and how fast you can level up (also because if you level up to fast, you lose the option to train your skills with some NPC... and this cost money to).

The game play is awful because, you have a fps screen to play, that is great to cast spells and use bow and arrow, but is awful to fight with mele and sneak. While the other camera view is great to sneak (you have a wider view) but is awful to use bow and arrow or spells. By this, you have to change of camera all the time. The hotkeys for spells or weapons are awful, sometimes I press a button and it chose a different spell from what I want. Also there are a lot of bugs and glitchs like for example I can levitate in a stair if I jump to it.

have you ever played morrowind ._.

you only level up quickly to start it becomes slower later
yes its hard to get money but once again it gets easier later and the more you explore the more you get, you dont actually get that much money doing the quests
dont expect to be all powerful at the beginning with mega spells of death, its slow to start especially as a mage
you can make you own spells if you join the mages guild
there is no set thing to do at any moment as you said it is completely open, pick a guild or something and do those quests like the dark brother hood, they give you places to go, if you do the dark brotherhood you get a realyl cool horse at one point that makes travel a lot easier
whats wrong with using melee weapons in the FP screen ._.
