I want to see this game made, but I'm a college student and therefore, completely broke. So I figured I'd spread the word.

Quite a few high-profile developers are getting together on this and making a story and character-driven fantasy RPG like Baldur's Gate. By taking the publisher out of the deal, they're allowing themselves freedom to include whatever content they want. As said in the video, they can make an M-rated game without worrying about being too mature for daylight.

Also, original IP and character-driven fantasy. Yes. Yesyesyes.

Oh, so this is the game that I heard about by Obsidian that's on Kickstarter. Well, it looks like it's going to go through. It raised the pledge and a little bit more.

On a side note: Kind of an unorthodox way to get money for a game dev like Obsidian.

Obsidian is broke at the moment. Their options are either to do something like this and try making a great deal of money for themselves, or work for a publisher and make a tiny return on investment that won't really help them in the long run. I'm guessing that they're trying to keep the studio above water and not have to work on commercial projects.

Hunh, that makes sense. With this move, I wonder if this will become the norm with other "small" developers.

I hope so. Torchlight 2's developers reported that, with a $60 game, about $16 came back to them per unit. Without a publisher in between, they're selling Torchlight 2 for $20 and all $20 is going back to them. If that's what Kickstarter enables, I'm all for it.
