Ohai gaiz...figured I'd get used to this MT and make a crit thread.
Crit away if you wish, today I have a nice serving of value practice, right out the oven.
Please, eat, enjoy.

*takes one and chews* ^^
*looks at the wood through the nose* 0_0
hehe ^_^

well, I'm not sure since I'm not good in anatomy, but I feel that the neck muscle on the left must be shifted a bit to the left.

You're doing well, Gunzet.

01-19-2011, 04:44 PM
Nice job with the values. I usually find myself looking at your pieces when you find the time to post on DA. You generally have really interesting anatomy that works for the subjects of your pictures. My only problem with your piece above is that you use too soft a brush which makes it look like I'm squinting at the picture. Iirc, your goal is to do more conceptual art. I'm sure you've looked through conceptart.org but I'd like to point out this one thread that I read on painting in photoshop (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=107217). I think that what is said in it applies to any other art program that you may be using. Maybe you've already seen and read it, but I think it may be worth taking a look at again. I look forward to seeing more.

01-19-2011, 06:14 PM
@Yara: Ah thankyou. I tried to just make a simple face with a certain style of mine, so I didn't really pay much attention to the other anatomy stuff. Other than the shape of the face.
@Nisaren: Thanks, I've been really trying to nail these values lately.
As for the soft brush thing. I can't help it! :C whenever I think I'm sharpening things up, it just looks bad to me and I soften it. But I'll really try and work on this.
Thanks for the link too, I'll check it out.

Grayscale value version

With colors. The colored parts are on an overlay or color layer...I forgot.

This took HOURS, initially I was just going to leave it as a drawing. But I figured, hell...this has a lot of detail already, why not do more value practice

01-20-2011, 06:27 PM
Very nice man. I like the clear defined lines and sharp edges you used in this one. I don't feel like I'm squinting anymore.

01-20-2011, 06:33 PM
Gunz. You have obtained a new level. I will never catch up. QAQ

01-20-2011, 07:58 PM
All of it is quite good, but one area of particular excellence is the chest area in the colored version. The colors, values and textures work well together there. It looks very polished and the rim lighting on those "nipple vents" is particularly sharp and detailed. But one thing I noticed is that you're still rather dependent on lines for detailing. That makes certain parts look scratchy and cartoon-ish. A good way to get out of that habit is to take a fully organic character, stylized, and try to render it with value. You'll feel the temptation to draw things in line, but force yourself to avoid using anything smaller than 3pt.

But definitely a step above your previous stuff. Your shading on large, broad shapes (ie. the pecs) is top notch. You just need to work on shading the intricacies.

01-20-2011, 08:14 PM
@Nisaren: Thanks, that link you gave me helped out a lot actually.
@Jai: Nah man. You gotta WANT to catch up, it's still possible.....for now
@Cype: Thanks a lot bro. Well, I do really like lines, as I don't often do this kind of stuff. So yes. As a result, I rely on lines to get my point across xD. I'm actually working on doing that with an organic character right now. So I'll see how that turns out.
Anyway, thanks again. Appreciate the comments peeps.

01-20-2011, 09:27 PM
Those are some pretty insane works you got there. I love the robotic armor-type one the best. Your value and use of color is simply astounding, and I envy you for that. The only thing I can suggest is possibly to make your lines cleaner, but that is a struggle in and of itself.

Nevertheless, this is awesome stuff. Lovin' it! :D

01-21-2011, 06:09 PM
Yea I agree with everyone, nice concepts. Hope to see your organic character soon.

01-21-2011, 06:17 PM
Thankyu, thankyu, I think that has to be my best work of 2011 so far. I've been hard at work with practice lol.
As for the line issue. I personally like scratchy lines, I mean, the type that are a slight bit unclean, but not too all over the place to where it's horrible...it's just grown on me over the years, I don't really like turbo clean lineart...at least in my art.
But thanks man.

HERE, is a new one...oh god it was horrible. I took an old sketch I was initially NEVER going to finish, and decided to work on it. It took hours, and hours, and hours, due to the mutated anatomy, so I had to figure out what values went where, and tried my hardest.
Wall of text aside. Here is the result.
I know I messed up a few spots. Crits on the value placement though?
You can't see the text, I did that on purpose. It says "The dark isn't so bad...once you get to know it". Hinting that a fking huge demon grew out the dudes head lol.

Even more.
This one is a lame practice attempt at making a Soviet...I didn't do a good figure, so I erased most of the body, resulting in a steaming pile of gray crap.

This is a commision for my aunt. She's throwing a party and wanted my art on the fliers, so here's what I did.
Here's the flier itself that I just received today.

01-21-2011, 08:31 PM
The organic character turned out pretty nice, actually. You're good with maintaining strong levels of contrast, which is a step above most people who get into value sketching. Don't be afraid of blacks, which isn't hard for you considering you are one. Ohohohohoh, casual racism. But anyway:

Now that your shading is pro, all you need to work on is establishing VALUE with your value sketches. What I mean by that is: even in black and white, you should be able to get a loose idea of what "color" everything is. Whereas everything in that piece looks like it would be the same or a similar color. If that IS the case, then work on establishing more variety in terms of texture. Make your metals shine, your skin look supple and your clothes look....fabric-y. That way, the separate elements of the picture don't run together.

Other than that: great work, Gunz. Looking forward to more.

01-23-2011, 11:48 AM
Ah thanks, you got a point, I never really think about color, since I don't do it much.
But that's definitely something I'll look into on future drawings. I'll also work on making my textures differ. Thanks.

Here's some more practice.
The first cone I did before I went to sleep, the last two I did just as I woke up.

01-23-2011, 12:43 PM
you are taking some huuge steps gunzet! i really like, no, ENVY your works.

01-23-2011, 03:22 PM
xD thank you a lot, forcing myself to progress and try what I'm not used to has turned out to be a good move so far. Naw need for the envy though lol, we're all at our own levels. Just keep it moving and you'll be awesome.

Here's another I started a few hours ago.
This is near 2 or 3 hours of sitting at my desk, and it's still nowhere NEAR done at all. So this is a progress thing.

You guyz may remember I made two of these characters, Divinity and Child's Play, and so I decided to go back to one of them and choose which to finish up...chose the evilest and easiet one...I mean, Divinity had a simpler face, but a fking gattling gun, while Child's Play has a kitten and a really hard face....anyway, here's the work so far.

01-23-2011, 04:54 PM
Nice. The values are well-assigned so far. I can clearly tell the top of his helmet is darker colored than the middle part.

01-24-2011, 06:01 PM
Thnx Cype.
As it turns out, this one is harder than I thought. I didn't balance the shapes and stuff right so I was constantly going around changes things. Although I rarely erased.

Still not done, just more progress on it...

01-24-2011, 06:28 PM
very rad so far, I don't have any problems with it at the moment. I've probably told you this millions of time, but you have an epic eye for value.

more plz!

01-24-2011, 09:15 PM
Mmmmm. Cheese. Still waiting on the return of TP3.

01-25-2011, 03:48 PM
@Toast: Lol I've never been good at value until now xD...so naw, this is the first time you said that...I think you got value mixed with detail. Thankyou.

@Bacon: What type of cheese? String cheese is BEAST!....anyway, YES, TF will be returning soon, I'm working on it >_> I've been really busy lately.

01-25-2011, 04:36 PM
@Bacon: What type of cheese? String cheese is BEAST!....anyway, YES, TF will be returning soon, I'm working on it >_> I've been really busy lately.

Cheese as in ... Mozerella?

Yeah, it's understandable. Dont you start College in the Fall? (Still a ways off, I know.)

01-26-2011, 09:49 AM
That's some pretty epic eyecandy Gunz!
i'm pretty curious what it'll look like when it's done...
BTW, is it me or are you mainly inspired by Gears of War and Unreal 3?

01-26-2011, 11:16 AM
@Bacon: I was supposed to be in college a week ago, but stupid financial aid made some mess ups....twice now. So I've been dropped 3 times now, and I'm just gonna do late start classes...which I'm hoping I survive.

@Hell_Baron: Ya got meh. Yes my art is mainly inspired by Gears and UT3...and various other scifi games and crap. I picked up the style when I was surfing around Conceptart.org and found James Hawkins (aka Hawkprey) Who did concept art for Gears and UT3, and he's been a huge inspiration since...plus I wanna work for Epic or Midway Games one day.

01-27-2011, 11:31 AM
GunZet, you mad genius you, what have you been eating/drinking? (or what have they've been feeding you here?)

Your stuff has improved so much! I like what I see in this thread, very impressive. Hope to witness more amazing creative mind madness from you soon!

(So many people has hit the button on their level up rocket. I gotta build mine as well!)

01-28-2011, 11:46 AM
I've been drinking water, and eating hotdogs...both highly irradiated.
Thankyou! xD

Here's Child's Play, finally finished.
I don't like it much, but it was sure an adventure...I worked on this a few hours over the course of four days, so maybe about 7+ hrs put into this.

This was mainly done to try and do what Cype suggested, work on showing 'color' through 'value' Meh...anyway.
I'll upload the grayscale later.

No idea how many times I've erased parts and replaced and re-did...Mainly I took out her arm holding the SMG, one earring off the kitten, and her wings are gone.

01-28-2011, 03:43 PM
Great concept as always mate!. I really like the great balance in the hardness and softness of your pictures. And the dinks and scratches are well made.

Now I know you use the Greyscale and the Overlay method, which is a good and fast method to use, but the problem here is that your colours will appear to be somewhat flat looking or a lack of tone and saturation in my experience. Especially in the highlight areas. it just goes white. And every if you were too add any sort of light like the ones in the eyes and arm, they don't have enough richness in them.

You need to add more vibrant colours to it, make it look more solid, more like your own painting rather than something made with a program. Heres what I would do,

Create a new layer above the overlay layer. From here, add "hand picked colours" in other words colours with different value or saturation that you picked from the palette and paint on top yourself. This way you'll get more richness in the painting, or another way of doing this is, instead of just using on overlay layer, you was actually first, use a Multiple layer to get the base colour down, THEN use an overlay layer on top of that to get the high lights.

Ok, heres what I got, Chest Plate and the Crouch guard? O_o, i dunno, I hand pick colours to paint over these. I added a secondary colour to bring out the picture a lot more, giving it more depth, as you can say.
The lights in its eyes has been given more colours, orange, red, yellow, white, all in the hue..y way, I guess. As for the shoulder piece, I just created an overlay layer, and colour it with light blue to give it that highlight effect.

Hope these help dude C:

EDIT: Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, the lighting around the eye would have spread all over the face, meaning the facial area that is parallel to the lights, will be bouncing off the lights.

01-28-2011, 04:28 PM
I like your latest. Very nicely done and moody. I know it was mainly an exercise in value but I second the comment above about more vibrant colors. Have you ever checked out www.idrawgirls.com (http://www.idrawgirls.com)? The blog there has an interesting approach towards painting in photoshop. I believe the artist that writes it is a concept artist in the gaming industry. At any rate, thought you may find it interesting since you're into concept art. I'm considering trying to apply his techniques in my own artwork.

01-28-2011, 06:28 PM
@DHB: Thanks! I'm still getting a hang of this...as for fast? HELL NO! lol I'm not too used to taking hours and hours and hours on something, but it's worth it.
Now as for the issues with the colors...I've come to liking very desaturated colors, I don't know why, I just don't dig the whole vibrant look too much (I even play my games like that). But in the case of this pic, you're right, it doesn't stand out much.
I'll try out what you suggested in future drawings, thanks for the tips. And epic re-color!

@Nisaren: I check out the Idrawgirls blog a lot, and I've learned some stuff from him, but I don't often stick to it. I do whatever is more comfortable for me, ya know? But he's got some damned good techniques that I still use now.
Also thanks buddy :D

01-28-2011, 10:19 PM
Oh, I see, in that cast you'll love /ukitakumuki (http://ukitakumuki.deviantart.com/).

In that case, I would suggest reducing the amount of white as highlights, simply because white is a strong colour. Try using Low value tone instead, and only use white for that really really shiny areas. ;D

01-31-2011, 04:35 AM
Damn, that looks nice!
i'm totally gonna use this as background on my comp!

01-31-2011, 02:06 PM
@DHB: Ahh I actually already watch that person I think xD I checked him out a while ago, and his works on Armored Core...fking epic.
I'll also try and tone down my use of whites, guess I made this too shiny lol.
@Hell_Baron: Lol, thanks man. I got it as background on my laptop atm haha.

Here's the grayscale version...much better looking than that crappy colored one.

Sorry...took a while to get that up with no internet.

02-01-2011, 03:35 PM
I liked the one in color actually, it just needed more light emission from the eyes and hand lantern (thingy).

02-05-2011, 05:04 PM
Ah, cool. Well I'm just glad I'm done and over with that piece lol.
Here's a new lil concept. I have a whole description for the suit but meh...cba.

From a few days ago.

*I had a really hard time with the chest area, so I kept redrawing it until I found something I liked. I also know the hands are jacked up, I tried to save them, but really just got lazy....so yea, it's half-assed.

And here's a preview of a new piece I'm working on. Something that isn't completely sci-fi

By the way, Triple Flip is still living and breathing guys! it's just going to take a bit longer to get these pages out, I've had no internet access recently. But here, take these promo characters instead.
They'll most likely pop up in the comic.

02-05-2011, 05:34 PM
I just found your thread on CA and remembered that you were really good . . .

This one (http://img641.imageshack.us/img641/2107/latestpractice9.png), though, looks kinda like his face is part of the helmet--like painted on, instead of actually being inside it. Because I'm worlds crappier than you, I have no idea how to fix that. Sorry.

02-05-2011, 05:45 PM
xD CA is a tough place to live...but I'm gud. Thanks bro.
It's supposed to seem very skin-tight.
As part of the description for the suit...blah blah blah nano-technology, blah blah, conforms to the shape of the face and hardens to a strength of kevlar when in use. And when the user wants to remove the helmet, it reads the brainwaves, and reduces its toughness to that of rubber, so that the user can easily remove it...so yea...lol....here's this too.

02-05-2011, 05:51 PM
Oh snap! The Triple flip redesigns are the highest caliber of boss. Lookin' forward Gunz.

02-06-2011, 05:27 PM
xD, finally, I've achieved BOSS STATUS, hell yea. Thanks man, I'm also looking forward to fiiiinally getting a few pages out for you peeps. Give or take a week or so.

02-07-2011, 04:43 AM
You know, that suit really reminds me of Vanquish for some reason...

02-13-2011, 06:58 PM
Lol Vanquish? That's odd.

Guys, so...instead of drawing I've been attempting some modeling.
Here's this kickass gun I modeled. Sort of inspired by the Tar-21, and Halo's MA5B-AR.

Workflow -
Draw silhouette in SketchBook Pro 2010
:Trace over concept in Google Sketchup 7. Extrude, and make the rough low poly model.
:Export as a 3Ds file to 3Ds Max 2010, work in additional details from there.
:Clay render, sorry, the renders are bad lol.

Around 12-13k poly's

Initial concept + Model comparison

Here's a scene.

And here's the latest version. I smoothed out some surfaces, and added in some extra detail.

*In additional news, Triple Flip is taking a bit longer to get out with all this stuff I have to do. I still don't have home internet either, so uploading all of those images will be a pain. I'm waiting for my college money to come through hopefully, then I'll be back full swing.

02-16-2011, 02:41 PM
Here is a badly designed chair. Made primarily in Zbrush by using the given primitives only, e.g. the body of the chair was made by using the gear primitive and changing its variables.
A few other parts were made in 3Ds Max.

I was practicing with Zbrush and decided I haven't messed with the primitives enough. When I found that I could change a bunch of stuff while in their non-edited form. I started to experiment.

02-16-2011, 05:39 PM
Badly designed?! That chair is awesome! I wish I had one for loafing about watching TV, it would be like I'm in the future but I'm still a stoner movie-esque slacker.

02-25-2011, 02:30 AM
Lol thanks bro. BY the time I decided to change the design and make it a floaty chair instead...well I had already merged everything, DOPE!

Well since I saw a massive increase in my drawing skills in January - present, I'm deciding to catch up on my modeling and sculpting skills.
That means using more and more Max and ZB

Here's my latest practice venture. This was initially made to be a quick, speed model to get used to the poly-modeling method. But it went further than I expected.

I drew a quick upper body, front and side view, then set them up as image planes in Max, from there I poly-modeled the shirt.
The pants, arms, and hands were all modeled with no reference, and poly-modeled separately.

The shoes were made by using reference images, a top and side view, then poly-modeled.

Other parts like the belt and chain were made by using the GoZ plugin with both Max and Zbrush so I could travel back and forth pretty fast.
Here is the low-poly. There is no full body underneith anything.

Poly Count: 4,000+
Tri Count: 8,000+
Vert Count: 4,000+
FULL SIZE VERSION HERE (http://img189.imageshack.us/img189/4237/viewsq.png)

Here is the high-poly, which sucks but whatever. I sculpted in a few wrinkles but I got bored/tired.
And I know the hands are badly done, I'm still learning lol.

02-25-2011, 09:24 AM
Aw what, now im seriously pissed of at imageshack, I cant see any of your stuff now! D:<

oh well, I just check the DA pages >_>

02-25-2011, 10:32 AM
lolwuhhh..well I just checked my tutorial, country restriction, wtf?
Have you thought of using a proxy to get around that maybe, I don't know if it'd work but it's worth a try if it's a restriction.

02-25-2011, 05:11 PM
This is for a challenge at the CGfeedback.com forums. Lol, I just signed up.

Reason? One of my favorite artists died (Clemente Suave), and I just found out. So the challenge I entered is a tribute to him, I just started a few hours ago.
The challenge is to try to match his style as close as possible, whether 2D or 3D.
Here's my entry WIP

02-26-2011, 12:45 AM
(Lag double post)

02-26-2011, 12:46 AM
A few variations on that challenge drawing, any suggestions? I'm making two more.

02-26-2011, 12:51 AM
Hott stuff Gunz, I;m not familiar with the artist but this is mad good!
I like the added details on number 2 but number 3 has so much character.

02-26-2011, 03:21 AM
Thanks Sparky. Well, if you don't know who Clemente Suave is, you should google him. THe guy was a real style GENIUS!
Also, I may end up going with #2, I like the details, although I could probably throw in the face of #3

Here's the updated variation sheet.

And here's a new something added to the overall pic.
I drew him a little companion. Surprisingly...no guns on it xD

02-26-2011, 04:44 AM
Wow, gunz - you've improved so much since last time I've seen you're drawings O.o

Now you go so much into details, it really makes your drawing stand up. Great job diud, keep impressing me !

02-26-2011, 05:11 PM
Haha yea, I'm a detailaholic, and I've been practicing a lot lately, I think it's paying off lol. Thanks bro.

Here's a new model I started. I wanted to practice once more, getting better at making low-poly models.
I started off using image planes once again in Max. Then I started to model.
The whole thing is made mostly by edge/poly modeling, which means I only used a plane and cloned edges and placed them around, welding and cutting.
The only part that used a prim was the foot, which was made up of a cube.

Low-Poly Model stats:
650 Polys
1280 Tris

That's 7000 lower tris than my last model attempt, so I think I did good.

Here's the model after I imported into ZB and began sculpting.

02-27-2011, 07:28 PM
This is still for my challenge character. I decided to take the little mechanical companion I drew for the guy from the side and in a bit more detail. Also trying to throw in a bit of functionality.

02-27-2011, 07:44 PM
Damn Gunz, you've leveled up heartily! I found Clemente's DA, it sucks major that we gotta lose suck a great talent and such a nice guy.

02-28-2011, 05:37 AM
Kick-ass tank Gunz.
Looks like something from Metal Slug...

03-01-2011, 09:30 AM
@Sparky: Yea thanks. Working on this challenge has forced me to draw things I haven't in a looonng time...aka the robot and mechanical parts lol. It's refreshing. And it does suck about Clem, dude was just awesomesauce :C.

@Baron: Good ole Metal Slug, thnx bro.

Here's progress
WIP-4, just finished up the base lines this morning, and now there's only a little bit of cleanup, and coloring left.

03-01-2011, 11:21 AM
Wow, I'm really impressed with this last piece. I love this kind of art. I don't really have any crits for it at the moment, except to say that I hope you attempt to color it with more than just values. Keep it up man. You'll be working in the concept art arena before you know it.

03-01-2011, 12:21 PM
Thanks Nisaren, I don't plan on doing value at all on this one, that'd KILL me!!
So I'm coloring it, I'm going to try and replicate the way Clem used to color his drawings.
And I'm so hoping I get into the field one day O.O.

03-01-2011, 03:18 PM
I'm not sure I know who Clem is... Do you have a link to his stuff or how he approaches coloring?? I'm always interested in learning new techniques.

03-01-2011, 04:24 PM
Thanks Nisaren, I don't plan on doing value at all on this one, that'd KILL me!!
So I'm coloring it, I'm going to try and replicate the way Clem used to color his drawings.
And I'm so hoping I get into the field one day O.O.

You are going to value it and your gonna like it too! :P
Looks amazing, it's really like Clem's style :D

03-02-2011, 02:57 AM
I AM NOT DOING VALUE ON THIS!! xD, maybe in a few years I'll come back to it.
And thanks man, the closer I get to his style, the more chance I have of winning...the prize isn't much. But the judges are concept artists from Ubisoft and Blizzard and all that.

Here's an update

03-02-2011, 07:30 AM
Is this guy going to be featured in a comic anytime?

03-02-2011, 09:24 AM
Noope, probably never, as much as I would like to do that. I don't have the patience or time.
So he'll just end up like all my other drawings.

03-02-2011, 09:33 AM
Besides, if you made comic with this guy we'd never get new Triple Flip action.

03-02-2011, 04:15 PM
Whoa, people still look at Triple Flip? Lol, I kind of reabbandoned it. Guess I'll keep it alive afterall. :cat_sad:

03-02-2011, 10:15 PM

But this new piece, duuuude. Awesome details. It's crazy-good.

03-03-2011, 08:39 AM
DONT YOU DARE LEAVE IIIF!!!!!....ill be sad....and probably everyone else that stalks you....

03-03-2011, 11:08 PM
Thanks Seef. And Gedeon, I'm not leaving it xD I think I have like...the only skateboarding manga in the world that's longer than a few pages. I'm gonna keep making it.

If you can hear me Seuss, happy b-day in whatever manic land you're in atm.

03-04-2011, 03:57 AM
That shit is seriously disturbing, in a good way. Are they supposed to look like homicidal grannies? Because that was the first thing that entered my mind.

03-04-2011, 06:04 AM
Ya know what. I actually think they are O.o'

Good thing I hit that disturbing mark. I'm slowly destroying my childhood drawing this.

03-04-2011, 05:21 PM
Lookin' great Gunz! <3
Will you be adding a background for your entry or will it remain plain white?

Clemente's DA here. (http://clementsauve.deviantart.com/gallery/) He's got awesome stuff and I see how his work can influence folks (He's got a new fan! :adds to fave: )

03-04-2011, 09:40 PM
True to his style of drawing characters. I'm not adding any sort of background for this entry. Just white.
Clem was a pretty awesome dude, wish I knew how he did his awesome robot drawings/designs.

Here's this. It's finished now.
I swear it's cursed somehow, I could've gotten this done earlier, but it kept making me extremely tired O_O

03-07-2011, 05:19 PM
Decided to re-color this. Ugh, alllmost done.

03-07-2011, 08:33 PM
cool are u still entering it into that contest? whens it due?

03-07-2011, 08:52 PM
I thought it was March 11. Turns out I mis-read it. It ends on March 17th. I'll have it done before then.

03-07-2011, 08:54 PM
I find that thing 1 and 2 picture so cool.
I want as my desktop bg <3

03-08-2011, 08:19 AM
Love the Army Of Two-esque dude, you really do seen have nailed his style. Also, is that a hockey mask on his head?

03-08-2011, 09:58 AM
keeps getting more awesome, dude.
i hope you'll at least get an honourable mention

03-08-2011, 10:52 AM
@Slurpee: Haha, glad you like it :]

@Lucifer: Good to hear that I nailed it...or at least came close, that's the plan. Er, I dunno I just threw that mask on his head because a lot of Clems' characters wear one. It's more like one of the ballistic masks that the dudes from Army of Two wear.

@Baron: Thanks mang, I hope I win at least SOMETHING xD. There are a lot more people doing models rather than 2D pieces. So I'm kind of in the underdog section. Then again this is more to honor the fallen artist, so I don't mind.

03-08-2011, 11:14 PM
So here's the near finished pic. I have the guy all blocked in with flat colors as you can see. Now I have to do the robot, shade, and throw in a few textures...maybe.

03-09-2011, 03:21 AM
Flat colors are always the hardest part, aren't they? XD But even still, I love the palette. And the Thing 1 and Thing 2 thing (lol) is probably one of my favorites from you! :D

03-09-2011, 02:14 PM
Hey Gunzet,

I've been following your thread for some time to see what I can offer you in terms of critique. For the most part, you have the basics down and everything.

My recommendation for you is to find ways to speed up your process. In your military guy example, when you are painting the flat tones, I noticed that you are painting it by sections (based on the arm and the elbow pads). Not saying that it's wrong or anything like that. However, it is time consuming based on your own replies.

To speed this up, paint the entire body right underneath it. Create layers that will apply right over the body like clothing, etc. Repeat as necessary for all the flat colors.

I can show you by example from an article I did on character designs located at http://www.2d-digital-art-guide.com/character-designs.html

The final picture:

This one has about 7 flat color layers to her character: skin, shirt, skirt (and boots), trench coat, hair, hair at the back, and one lighting/shadow layer once it has been converted to a smart object.

Each of these flat layers can pile additional layers through clipping masks. This method of organization should speed up your workflow dramatically. Let me know if it helps you out.

03-10-2011, 09:35 PM
You're right, I do color everything in sections. And thanks for the tips.
I prefer coloring in parts though, even if it takes me a really long time, I just like that extra bit of control you know? With very minimal cleanup.
I was never one to color much anyway.
I will try your method in the future though, thanks!

03-11-2011, 02:56 PM
duuuude, Gunz. GUNZ.
why are you so cool?,. that big dude's colours are pretty cool. I think the subdued colours go with the flat shading. D: unless..you're planning on adding more fancier shading?
plus, awesome Thing 1 and Thing 2 D: Dr. Seuss would be prouuud ;a;a;a;

03-16-2011, 01:16 AM
I'm planning on doing some flat shading also, maybe with some fuzzy bits here and there. And lol, I think he'd be freaked out, AND AMAZED. xD, thanks E.

Ok so I know I haven't posted in a bit, homework is devouring me. But I did manage to doodle these out before class started.
Still heavily influenced by Clem atm.

03-16-2011, 01:21 AM
Lovin' the style, especially on that last one. However, the legs in both pictures seem to be rather short and generally tiny. Is that stylistic or unintentional? Also the neck and traps on that first guy are enormous. o - o

The detail though. It's pretty damn awesome.

03-16-2011, 09:15 AM
Lol, it's the style. If you haven't checked out
Clemente Suave, google some of his stuff, you'll see what I'm doing. Or at least going fore. He uses these crazy perspectives that usually distorts the anatomy...well his stuff his generally crazyily huge anyway.

Either way these were both like 10 min sketches or so lol. Thanks Tay.

03-16-2011, 11:34 AM
10 min sketches?? Seriously? Good lord man, I'm jealous. I wish I could put out detailed art that quickly. I'm sure it's a style choice on your part but the first guy seems to have his eyes located really high on his head. It doesn't make the sketch look bad, but it wouldn't have been my preference for placement. Or if you're going for the long nose and face, maybe give him a bigger forehead so it doesn't look as odd.

03-16-2011, 11:45 AM
Lol, once you practice detail for the longest time, it gets hard to go back to simpler things. Which can be a good or bad thing haha.
And yea, I noticed that too. The small forehead thing is something I usually look over, I'll keep that in mind. Thanks Nisaren.

I think I should really start practicing faces again, with reference. I feel like I keep drawing the same faces over and over again. Time to improve the variety.

03-17-2011, 02:51 AM
Those there are some lots of guns. I like the bottom one... lots of guns.... I think it needs more guns.

03-17-2011, 04:35 AM
Wow. I didn't even realize I put that many guns on the last one. Lemme see....a pistol, shoulder-mounted mini-gun, assault rifle...lol. I think I put a plasma cannon in his arm or something too.

Ok..guys, I didn't pay attention to the timezones and almost didn't put my entry in in time lol. I just finished it tonight by sacrificing sleep.
So here it is.

The final thing.

Nice colours. How do you draw stuff that's so busy, man? And in ten minutes. Jeeze.

As for the Clemente Suave thing, I didn't really find anything with legs that short, but it actually looks pretty neat, imo. Also, I googled him and one of your sketch journals came up like fifth in the results, lol. Turns out I had him in my DA bookmarks and I didn't even realise he died. o A o

(Btw, that 'thing 1 and thing 2' picture is epic. Totally didn't see it before.)

03-17-2011, 06:11 AM
*face explodes out of sheer awesomeness of the drawing*

03-17-2011, 11:04 AM
@Tay: I've always had a thing for really short legs once I started to draw Gears of War style xD I'll try and fix that.
I also googled him. My stuff pops up like the first and third spots in google images lolol.
Also thanks.
And yea, it's sad his last blog on DA is just him saying he's having health problems, I didn't think he'd die...I didn't even know he had cancer O.o.

@Baron: Man, now you got face everywhere :V

03-17-2011, 11:35 AM
Hey Gun, I was wondering... Would you mind if I took a shot at coloring that last piece? I'd like to work on my coloring a bit. If not, it's cool.

03-17-2011, 11:49 AM
Go ahead, I don't mind.

03-17-2011, 11:56 AM
Cool. :) You wouldn't happen to have a high res version of the linework saved anywhere would you?? :D

03-17-2011, 12:02 PM
For my challenge entry, right?
If so, yes. But I have to upload it.

03-17-2011, 05:32 PM
Yeah, for your challenge entry. If you would like you can email it to me. zakary.leblanc(at)gmail(dot)com

03-17-2011, 05:58 PM
Too lazy to do all that. So here's the link.
Right Hero Bruh. (http://img39.imageshack.us/img39/2893/suavetributelineart.png)

03-17-2011, 10:57 PM
EPIC picture. Shame you couldn't get a back-ground in though. What program did you use to color?

03-17-2011, 11:15 PM
OH SNAP! Gunz... you are my hero.

03-18-2011, 12:02 AM
Your style has evolved a lot. Keep it up, dude.

03-18-2011, 03:27 PM
@Bacon: Thanks man :). Well, I didn't plan on doing a background. Clem rarely used backgrounds in any of his concept character pieces, so I followed his example. I started out the coloring using GIMP and multiply layers...GIMP was failing me and didn't have the feel I wanted. So I went back into Sketchbook Pro and found that I could simply color under the lines..lol. So for this whole thing I used Sketchbook Pro, and the final edits were done in Photoshop.

@Cype: Also thanks. This isn't going to be part of my 'permanent' style. But I'll use it on the side for a lot of my concepts. Doing that challenge taught me a lot of new tricks..

Well I wasn't intending on uploading anything, but here's a model I started last night. Just practice.
Zbrush4 and Max2010

03-19-2011, 03:27 PM
The thing that holds his tools... The way it drapes over his torso, it looks like a giant roll of flab, maybe you should make it more consistent?

03-19-2011, 04:14 PM
I'm going around and adding more stuff later on. And I'll probably texture/poly-paint it in the end, so it won't look like that.

Character is also pretty fat if you haven't noticed lol.

03-19-2011, 06:26 PM
Yeah... But it was just MORE

03-20-2011, 04:28 PM
Updated, added er...some random details. I'm not using a concept or reference for this one, just making up stuff as I go lol.
I also threw away the last versions subdivisions in favor of finishing the low poly first, then sculpting later.
Zbrush screencaps.

03-22-2011, 05:48 PM
So, results for the challenge popped up today.
My piece didn't win overall, and it wasn't split up into categories like 2D/3D.
I sort of did basically place first in the 2D category though. I'm surprised it even got put in lol.
'Tis The Thread. (http://www.cgfeedback.com/cgfeedback/showthread.php?p=17133#post17133)

Here's an update on the model I've been working on.
The gun is a really old model I did, and never found any use for it until now really so...right now it's just hanging off in space lol.
Model Here. (http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/6811/modelsoldierturn1.png)

03-23-2011, 09:00 AM
Congrats Gunz!

BTW that 3d model kinda reminds me of the Heavy from TF2...

03-24-2011, 03:15 PM
Thanks Baron. And yea probably lol, I'm going for that semi-cartoony look on this model.

So, I decided not to use that old Sketchup model because the style of the gun didn't match with the character. Instead I decided to challenge myself and make a new gun from scratch and practice my modeling skills.

This was completely modeled in Max going off of the concept I drew in like...3mins as best I could.

I'll upload the Zbrush turntable scene in a bit, but here's a peek.

*EDIT: Zbrush Screens Here (http://img862.imageshack.us/img862/1259/gunturntable.png)

03-24-2011, 03:40 PM
nice!! i suck at 3d, btw you should be happy, for the contest! Its clear as day that your was picked out with a very good reason! ITS AWSOME! ....and dont get this the wrong way but you had quite the competition!!!

03-25-2011, 04:30 PM
@Gedeon: Hell yea I had competition! Most of those guys are pros and stuff lol. Thanks man.

I don't have a name for it. So I'll just call it the GAz-9
Either way, gun model is done.
I tweaked the center, the grip, and the trigger area as best I could.
Took it into Zbrush and sculpted in some details. Mainly screws and the ejection slot.
Here's some images.

Flat material - Zbrush screen cap

Zbrush screen cap

These are screen caps from inside 3Ds Max, not Zbrush.
I have the end of the gun rotatable so the stock can be flipped around to either full or compact. Making this sort of an assault rifle and SMG in one.

Click the picture for full size.
http://img696.imageshack.us/img696/6935/gunsheet3.th.png (http://img696.imageshack.us/img696/6935/gunsheet3.png)

This gun will be on my soldier model I've been working on.
I'm thinking of texturing this but eh. Enjoy.

03-27-2011, 05:20 AM
Gah. I forgot to do an AO Render for my gun from Max! BAH. Well here it is from behind and folded.

In the meantime I was going through my old pics on Tokyopop and found this old one.

From 2008

And I was like, Whoa. I should model that!. And so that's what I did. Started it today.

First I went ahead and re-drew it. front and side view.
Then took those into Max and set em up on planes, and got modeling.

*click picks for the larger view*
http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/1388/aoangle1.th.jpg (http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/1388/aoangle1.jpg)http://img848.imageshack.us/img848/4136/aoangle2.th.jpg (http://img848.imageshack.us/img848/4136/aoangle2.jpg)http://img861.imageshack.us/img861/6028/aoangle3.th.jpg (http://img861.imageshack.us/img861/6028/aoangle3.jpg)

This was just a texture test after I practiced UV unwrapping. I wanted to see how it would look and if I got the unwrapping right. The seams are still kinda screwed up and I'm still confused xD..but it came out pretty good for a test.
http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/9105/uvscrewaround2.th.jpg (http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/9105/uvscrewaround2.jpg)

UVW unwrapping done for the body. I think I got it pretty good for a beginner.

04-04-2011, 01:53 PM
So whoa. I haven't updated with any drawings recently. And this new stuff was actually done like a week ago. Either way, here's the last update I did.
In the original pic the bunny had a pistol of some sort, I decided to change that into a revolver, so I did some concept sketches to model on.

And after a few hours, I got this.

All quads I think. There might be like 1-3 triangles in the mesh, but hidden.

04-04-2011, 03:42 PM
that bunny's backpack is muy bueno

04-05-2011, 06:09 AM
This is like awesome, are just giving him the backpack? cause in that one shot it looks like he's wearing a bullet proof vest too.

04-05-2011, 06:34 AM
I really dont know where you get the determination to sit there forever and do all this detail work and not just fucking shoot some one. Amazing. (its a compliment i swear. and not a gay one surprisingly)

I think your bunnys cheeks could be fuller and a more pronounced nose.

04-05-2011, 08:20 AM
is it me or is that a double barreled revolver?

04-07-2011, 06:21 AM
We need to have like a watch option here, like on the Da. .......serriosly....i could have missed all the 3D fun from guzet if i hadnt rememberd you when i was looking for new pages of IIIf...T.T

04-07-2011, 11:50 AM

@Cake: Thankyou thankyou. Lol, everyone likes the backpack for some reason xD
@Sparky: Actually, I might model a small vest. But then that'd break from the original drawing, hmmm. Prooobably.
@Psy: Once you find that modeling is hella fun (that's if you survive learning the initial bits) then you'll understand how I can sit and mess with a 3D box for 6 hours at a time haha. And thanks, I think I'm going to delete the modeled eyes and nose, and just sculpt them right in Zbrush.
@Baron: It's just you lol. But that'd be cool o.o
@Gedeon: FRACK! Sorry bro, I really need to get around to more IIIf. Maybe this weekend when I have more time on my hands. Gah...but don't worry, it hasn't died >_>

04-07-2011, 02:01 PM
I want to marry you over those models. D: SO GOOD.

04-10-2011, 11:12 AM
Lmao...Thanks Seef. I'll thank about it.

This..this is a WIP.

Fans know who it is.

04-10-2011, 11:34 AM
*_* a wip? nothing to say, just FINISH it ^_^

04-10-2011, 11:43 AM
And we represent you the new master of value!!!......GUNZETICUS....this gladiator has been in the game for a whil and it shows in his prowes and skill, he cut down all the other contetants with only using brushes!!! I THE.....well an inportant side charachter......NAME HIM THE NEW GRANDMASTER OF VALUE!!!!!!

04-10-2011, 04:28 PM
This is MARVelous!

04-10-2011, 09:13 PM
-Wishes she knew who it was- D'8 -Feels out of the loop-

So far this looks really fantastic! I can't wait to see it finished.

04-12-2011, 12:44 AM
His teeth kinda scare me, bro.

04-12-2011, 03:04 PM
@Nerd: xD I'll finish it...at some point.
@Gedeon: My empire is growing. I thank you.
@Sparky: Lool, yess. Dude's a complete badass, thanks bro.
@Kasey: Heheh thanks Kasey. He's a character from Sin City.
@Linz: You want it, don't deny your urges.

So....doodle that isn't done.
Came from a face I sketched on the side in writing class.

I think I may take up doing daily doodles in the morning. Just really quick shits.

04-12-2011, 11:58 PM
I think I may take up doing daily doodles in the morning. Just really quick shits.

I fully support this, do it. You've got the touch! You've got the POOOOOWER!

04-16-2011, 08:15 PM
Well, I haven't finished Marv yet. And I haven't started morning sketches yet.
But what I did start just a few hours ago was this skateboard model.

Modeled in Max. Work in Progress

This was fun because I took out a bunch of my spare board parts and used them as reference. One of the hardest things to do was getting the holes in the board and matching them with holes in the trucks. I managed to do this with some deleted faces and spherify modifiers.

Anyway, I still need to check if the holes are in the right place, and finish the trucks.

And to make the bolts on the truck was weird, but I learned something. A usual axle bolt on a skateboard is a hexagon with a circular inside. So I made use of my recent experience with the boolean operations, and whatdya know...it worked out fine.

EDIT: Finished the modeling part.

04-17-2011, 11:32 AM
It looks like a real board in a white room....O..O Oh btw(sorry for asking this, its completely a different subject) But could you tell me is there a way to export files from the manga studio(demo) as lets say anything else then a jpg. format? Or at least some how to save the layers? Again sorry for the awkward question on your own art thread.....but it seemed like you know a lot about those programs and all sorry ^-^'

04-17-2011, 12:22 PM
xD thanks Ged. I put a lot of work into the little details to get this right. Most of the things you won't even see until I put up an exploded pic of the model.
Also, I don't think you can export from the Mangastudio demo. That's one feature they take away.
You'll have to find a different method, or {use the internet to your advantage}.

04-17-2011, 07:02 PM
I really don't want to know the amount of tris that went into that model :P

It all looks so smooth

04-18-2011, 04:28 PM
Actually the tri and poly count was around a million. But that was because I had all the pieces used to create it hidden in the scene.
The complete hi-poly model itself is around 200-300k polys/tris, that's only using non-collapsed turbosmooth mods.
The low-poly is about 30k polys and 80k tris.

Here's a exploded pic with all the pieces.

04-18-2011, 05:37 PM
Nice work on the board, you gonna design something for the deck?

04-18-2011, 08:15 PM
FRACK YOU DESTROYED SOMEONES BOAR-wait ....ohh that's a 3D model nice XD i keed. I knew it was 3D modeling from the start....kinda.....No for real it looks like you took someones board, went into a white room and dismantled it to pieces!

04-21-2011, 10:27 PM
soo cool!!

04-22-2011, 09:23 AM
Shit, brah. Every time I see this thread you get better. Epic board, man.

04-25-2011, 11:49 AM
@Kyyanz: Thankyou :)
@Renzo: Haha, I try to keep progressing man. I'd say since 2011 first began I've actually made some leaps and bounds in terms of technical skill and stuff. Thanks bro.

This is from a recent journal on my DA page: http://gunzet.deviantart.com/

So I've been thinking for about a month or so that I should open for commissions. Reason? Well I got this deal to go on a trip to Canada for this summer's SIGGRAPH. But I don't have a passport, or a job. Thus no money to get one.
But first I need to see if a good amount of people are interested. So leave a comment and let me know.
-I do basically anything; ok probably not. I don't do really cutesy stuff and women are my major downfall at the moment.
And although I don't show many fully colored pics: I AM fully capable of it. But check my gallery and this link here.

Until then...back to essays.

04-25-2011, 03:17 PM
You should definitely do commissions!!! I'm sorry that i cant help so much, i dont have pay-pal in Serbia ^-^' But you should definitely marectise yourself and your art!!! You cant find many peapol with their own styles these days (MANGA RULES ALL -_-'even me....) and plus you do an AWESOME JOB! But you need to have more marketing! i will defiantly tell anyone that i know and they want a commission to come to you! If you decide that you want to do them! Also you should state clearly that you can do 3d modeling! Not a lot of peapole can do it as you do! You should enter one of a LOT of groups that put marketing on commissions! Hope you earn enough somehow!!

04-26-2011, 05:51 AM
So I give you money and you draw me tengus? I support this.

04-26-2011, 12:52 PM
@Ged: That's cool man, thanks for the support!
@Sparky: I googled around for this 'Tengus' person, and came up with pretty much nothing lol. But without even knowing who or what it is. I'm pretty sure I'd be able to draw it xD. Well now I've gotta do the whole pricing stuff.

04-26-2011, 04:19 PM
The only tengu I know of is a spaceship on Eve Online. A sexy spaceship though (http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Tengu). :D

04-26-2011, 05:32 PM
If you've seen sparkys work before then you will have seen a tengu or two before. I was always told they were trolls or somthing but google says just supernatural beings.
Like so http://www.cryptomundo.com/wp-content/uploads/konoha_tengu.jpg .

04-26-2011, 05:54 PM
Yea I saw something like that and immediately thought "ohhhh...Sparky?" Lol.

04-26-2011, 06:13 PM
I should have realized...

04-29-2011, 04:34 PM
So I've been stuck in a semi-artblock recently. I don't know what's up but I just haven't been able to get my ideas down right lately...so here's something I did yesterday.

I just feel like I'm drawing the same thing over and over again. Time for another change maybe?

And this little thing right here showing my progress with learning value from the end of 2010 to early 2011.

http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/1992/progress201011.th.jpg (http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/1992/progress201011.jpg)

05-01-2011, 05:51 PM
I'm still in the slums, but still trying.

I know my color skills are lacking heavily, so yea...
I did this today, took an hour.

And here's the latest value sketch I started so I don't get rusty.
I'm planning on going really overboard with all the lights and stuff on this one.

05-02-2011, 12:31 AM
that guys so refined
whats his skin made of

05-02-2011, 05:50 AM
That 1 hour drawing looks awesome! the left arm looks thin, I wonder if it's supposed to be like that
The value sketch looks promising too ^^

05-04-2011, 02:59 PM
@Cake: No idea. But he's had some work done definitely.
@Mr_D: Yep his left arm is supposed to be smaller than the other. And as for the value one. I think I gave up on it half-way and started these instead.

This took around two hours to complete. I started out with a concept I whipped up in about a minute.
Took that into Max and made the model.
Then I opened SBP and began to go over the model with lines and began to color it.
Did some extra PS stuff and boom, done.
I'm loving this experimental color style I got going right now...I might just stick with it for a while and refine it.

05-04-2011, 03:16 PM
I for one love the maniac version, looks more vibrant compared to the fusion one. Also, like I said on MSN, time to texture that thing.

05-04-2011, 04:35 PM
Rockin' it as usual GunZ.

05-04-2011, 08:54 PM
Sweet mech. Are they high fiving?

05-05-2011, 08:46 AM
How can you come up with all them mech parts O.O ???? i have the hardest time trying to make something look mechanical and robot-like and you do it in a snap!!! Btw the "Maniac" canister-thingy suits you more :D Also i got to say this.......sparky's new avatar scares the shit out of me.

05-11-2011, 02:02 PM
@Lucifer: Thanks, true, and NEVER!
@Sparky: Haha yea..gotta keep moving somehow.
@Outcast: Nah the kid's trying to shake the Patrol Bot's hand. Mini-story=most of the things have a past of shoot first or be really mean, as that's how they were programmed. This one is different. Anyways.
@Ged: I grew up drawing nothing but mechs. Mostly Gundams. So I'm pretty used to all of these odd hard metal shapes and stuff xD It takes a while...and by a while I mean years of practice. Mechs are hard. Cype does some badass unique designs.
Also...I agree

Oh, and here's another mech...actually exoskeleton or something. Whatever, drew it yesterday.
I decided to make the colors quite muted just because I like it that way. I wanted it to be a bit gritty.

05-11-2011, 02:20 PM
IVE SEEN THOSE LEG PIECES!!! That looks like one of those prosthetic legs that give you a better ability to run! Great details gunz!! Seriously HOW do you come up with all the components!!??

05-11-2011, 02:27 PM
You my friend are CORRECT. As I was drawing I was thinking of a way to balance the mech out...I didn't want to draw feet, so the prosthetic things came to mind, and voila.
Really I have no idea how I come up with this stuff, I just draw and it comes naturally. Although I pay attention to my surroundings a lot, there are mechanical things all over the place. In the end I just draw...and once more, I have no idea xD. This thing only looks like it would be able to function.

05-13-2011, 02:49 PM
This is a model I finished a little while ago.
All ZB4.

05-15-2011, 04:13 PM
Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn... That is some awesome sculpting.

I do find it a mystery how his neck can support his massive head though.

05-18-2011, 05:24 PM
Thanks man, getting better lol.
And meh, no idea. Maybe his ears are weightless, who knows.

This is a new one I did today at my old school doing my Zbrush tutor thing. Cranked it out in like, an hour cause I was bored and lazy...really lazy. Like so lazy I didn't even put more than 5 minutes into the face, and covered the ears with circles meant to resemble headphones...

Anyway, see you guys in like 2 weeks or so.

05-18-2011, 06:25 PM
Did you design that dude from scratch? If so, you may just have created the baddest antagonist (or even protagonist) ever.

05-18-2011, 09:42 PM
Sweet. (:

05-19-2011, 07:36 AM
O.e he..................didn't........e-even.......try hard..........and yet.........IT LOOKS AMAZING!!!!! It reminds me of Batmans AA goons that are taking those steroids :D i know its called titan!!!

05-19-2011, 08:48 AM
O.e he..................didn't........e-even.......try hard..........and yet.........IT LOOKS AMAZING!!!!! It reminds me of Batmans AA goons that are taking those steroids :D i know its called titan!!!

Hey, that's Gunzet for ya.

OT: Nice one Gunz, real awesome piece.
and the fact that you cranked that out in less than an hour makes it even more awesome.

05-19-2011, 10:05 PM
Dude, that character design is awesome. And as if it couldn't get any better, the pose is just perfect. +

05-22-2011, 06:31 AM
woah , what program are you making those in ? Are you a potential game designer ? Your work reminds me alot of that sort of thing.
The shirt confuses me though. The way it is so tight around the chest but looser around the shoulder. And on the upper right most shot of him the shirt seems tight on the one shoulder and loose on the other. Im just nit picking I guess because I want to add something constructive to a thread for once haha.

The character design is wow though! Got that bad ass retro villain look about him.

06-11-2011, 02:44 PM
Sorry for the late late late replies guys...didn't have my laptop all May.

@Lucifer: Yep, popped out randomly from my head lol.

@Outcast: Like iced tea.

@Ged: xD Thanks.

@Baron: I try...I'm so modest ._.

@Celes: Thanks Seefs :D

@Scarlet: I made this completely in Zbrush, and yes I've made my own games before, and yes currently I'm a concept artist working on a game called Gore Toon. It's pretty cool..as for the shirt, I dunno lol. It felt too fitting so I loosened it up. But thanks man, I actually didn't put like any thought into the design, I was just bored and it happened haha.

So in the time I was without my laptop, I was forced to use pencil and paper or my skills would get rusty. So I decided hell, why not work on my realism/style more while I got the time?
I drew these by finding pics I wanted in magazines or on DVD covers and crap, and started drawing freehand from what I saw. Mostly to catch the likeliness of the people.

Two pro skaters, Carlin and Willow are straight bosses.
The one on the upper right I just drew from imagination.
My little brother, present and past.
Some mystery person

All of these were done using regular printer paper, a white eraser, and .7 lead pencil.

06-11-2011, 03:39 PM
Hawt Damn...

You never cease to amaze me gunz. Lolled at Picard, though it weren't the eyes that grabbed my attention. It were his ears. He seems... Vulcany now :P

06-13-2011, 12:36 PM
xD Yea they are a bit pointy. Maybe he secretly IS Vulcan, who knows eh.

So I just watched Transformers 2 a few days ago and I had a big urge to draw a robot of some sort.
I seriously wasn't trying to make it look like a Transformer, but to no avail, that's what it ended up looking like...

06-13-2011, 01:02 PM
Nice!! I don't think it really looks like a transformer o-o....ok maybe a little, but only cuz of the wheels. sick design as always! *bows in the presence of a legend*

06-17-2011, 03:51 PM

So the portraits are a nice turn-around from all the mechs and creepy stuff (not that those aren't awesome too) and they are done great! also MATRIX FTW!!! Also about the transformer robot, i have to agree with NWAP that the first two don't look like transformers don't look like transformers, and as i studied them more, i noticed that the only reason that they don't look like transformers to me is that they don't have wheels on their feet..... weird i know /: Still awesome parts are always amazing me, but you already know that. Nice work gunz!

06-20-2011, 04:52 PM
The ones with the bent metal legs dont seem likely to be able to stand in one spot for long. They would have to be super balanced to stay up and the torso would probably not be able to bend or even wobble (so a good strike to the side and its down for the count). The one with the wheels may shand a better chance at being able to fall down and get right back up again.

06-20-2011, 05:41 PM
@NWAP: I dunno still looks like one to me lol, just the body and the face *shrugs* Also thankyou xD, don't remember when I became a 'legend' around here, but thanks a lot.

@Gedeon: I do anything really, mechs and scifi/creepy stuff is just a personal preference of mine heh. I've been quite drained of ideas though so I've been drawing faces and life stuff lately lol. Thnx Ged.

@Psy: Don't underestimate the POWER of imagination!

Ok so...I haven't been in the mood to draw my usual crap, so here's some more er...semi-real realism shits.

Did this in my Art Appreciation class, we went to draw. It was basically a test to see if anyone really could draw lol.

And here's some new skate shoes I got this month.

06-20-2011, 11:37 PM
That was friggin' awesome Gunzet! Respect!! +++

06-20-2011, 11:47 PM
Dude. I think that's some of your best art right there. You should post more stuff that hasn't been tempered with by the computer.

06-21-2011, 11:29 AM
I can't do anything right without the Ctrl-z option T.T Im good at drawing but its most likely that Gunzet is going to draw something really bad then me coloring cool and professional with traditional tools TAT

06-22-2011, 05:13 AM
I just had to comment! Wow the face and the eye!!! That stuff is awesome !! what material did you use if you dont mind me asking ?
The shoe is well drawn, looks like the sorta thing I would wear actually.

06-22-2011, 04:21 PM
@Hamachi: Thanks!

@Bacon: First and foremost I'm a traditional artist, I'll never forget where I came from: pencil and paper. I do love digital drawing, but I've been hitting my roots a lot more recently, thanks bro.

@Ged: xD once you start getting used to ctrl-z, things get a bit tough when all you have is an eraser. Drawing stuff traditionally takes a lot more confidence in your skills.

@Scarlet: Thankyou thankyou. All I used was a 0.7 lead pencil and a white eraser I've used for about 4+ years now. I touched it up with a few effects in PS.

06-23-2011, 03:40 PM
I can appreciate that art, sure. You got some nice stuffs in here though :> I like the mecha dudes on top of the page. And F the 'Ascension',
F for fabulous! -has totally not been playing too much games-

06-24-2011, 06:39 PM
That first sentence kinda confused me Sho xD. But thanks...I think...right? Yep thanks.

So guys I'm excited to return to my old style of really buff badass dudes in armor with guns and shite.

The man who got me into concept art (James Hawkins aka Hawkprey aka the guy who does most of the concept art for Gears and UT3) has a new blog! His old site dropped off the face of the earth a few years ago leaving me to scavenge for his work, but now he has everything in one place, and I just gotta say. I'm inspired once more and here goes another adventure.

I'm a bit rusty with this.

I'm not proud of this one.

And then there's these.
I wanted this dude to be really long and gangly and lanky but huge, so his arms are really long.

Another sad attempt.

06-24-2011, 07:53 PM
Nice ones gun, I know it's just a sketch but the gun in the second one looks really off perspective-wise. Have you ever checked out Feng Zhu's tutorials? I've started watching them a little while ago and they've definitely gotten me interested in doing more painting rather than just line art. I'd highly recommend watching them if you haven't already.

06-25-2011, 01:08 AM
;A; MOWREEECE ;c ;c where have you been man?
anyway, awesome new stuff man.

06-25-2011, 02:12 AM
Lol good art like always.

06-25-2011, 05:19 AM
Art Appreciation class, appreciating art, getit...?

That first picture. So awesome.

06-27-2011, 06:06 PM
@Nisaren: True. I'm on a search right now...I have all this skill when it comes to detail, but shape...ugh, feels like my shape always comes out the same. I need to be more diverse in that area, thus I'm on a journey atm. Also I'll check that dude out.

@Erk: Oh I've been around, where have YOU been!?

@Joosh: Not always but I try hard lol, thanks mang.

@Sho: Yea, that's basically what the class is about. Learning about other art cultures from other periods, and learning about our own stuff blah blah, it's cool I guess. And also thnx.

So uh. Here's a WIP of a gun I started.

And of a character. WIP

06-27-2011, 06:54 PM
I see a lot of AOT style around here, still hooked on Clements style eh?

06-27-2011, 07:12 PM
Lol hit the nail on the head yep. I just love his style too much to let it go, so if I can make it a part of mine, why not? I wanna keep his work alive ya know. Plus the work he did on AOT20thD is just flawless.

06-28-2011, 05:25 PM
I decided I was going to finish that gun no matter what, whatever way I could. So here's the final result.

Started a flamethrower drawing yesterday at random. This is the draft/sketch.

Finished it this morning.

06-29-2011, 11:52 AM
http://img818.imageshack.us/img818/269/congunfin.jpgThe angle of the... um, ribbon or magazine? (where the bullets are kept) seems off to me like it needs to be tilted towards the viewer a bit more. It looks like it's going off in a different direction from the rest of the gun.

06-29-2011, 05:22 PM
That's odd, it should be alright. There's a little opening underneith that might've thrown your eye off, but it should be straight. Not to mention there's some overlapping parts and I didn't shade anything...my bad.

So um...I drew a COG yesterday. But I forgot to up the image size so it's amazingly small. I was trying to go for the way the concept art looks but I might've failed.

06-29-2011, 10:47 PM
His pose looks kinda floaty. I think a guy like that would benefit from a more solid stance.

06-30-2011, 05:42 PM
Yea but bleh I don't feel like redrawing him lol...looks like he'll have fun in 0 grav forever.

Started this this morning. Took about 4-5 hours.

07-01-2011, 04:44 AM
I love all of your character designs. Especially all the high tech looking gear they have on!
Got a real different feel to your style compared to alot of styles iv seen.

07-01-2011, 04:38 PM
Very impressive! What program did you use to color? :)

07-01-2011, 04:39 PM
XD first thing i thought when i saw the newest pieces was ''Brink''! XD

07-01-2011, 05:55 PM
@Scarlet: THANKYOU, that makes a lot of difference right there. For a while I've been thinking I was doing the same thing as everyone else, but to hear that is just great. Thanks again.

@Portogas: I drew and colored it in Sketchbook Pro first, then I added some gradients and did some color changes in Photoshop. Thnx.

@Gedeon: Lmao, I got that on the Newgrounds portal too xD...wasn't my intention but hey, the Brink concepts and characters are awesome, so I'll take it!

So I started this this morning...once again I did about 5-6 hours straight without taking a break.
I wanted to make this guy look really bulky and just straight up intimidating, but at the same time have something about him that says he's 'authority'.
For the last design I wanted a German soldier/cowboy look...meh. My mom likes that one lol.
For 6 and 7 I wanted to keep that bulky look, but chill it down a bit. I wanted him to have a smile but some gruff features. So it's like...you could be his best friend, just don't screw with him and it'll be alright.

http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/5292/cptlucas.th.jpg (http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/5292/cptlucas.jpg)

Lemme know which one you guys like...or none >_>'

07-01-2011, 07:13 PM
Nice pieces. I was wondering if you were still using sketchbook pro or not. I think my favorites are probably number 5 and 7.

What I've noticed however is that the differences between some aren't easily discernible. If you were getting these prepped for a client you'd probably want very distinct differences between concepts so that they can remember them. Right now I pretty much only remember four concepts - the cowboy concept, strategic genius (glasses) concept, evil overlord concept, and the initial "Ima-kick-your-ass" soldier concept.

Not sure where you get your ideas Gunz but keep them coming. :)

07-01-2011, 11:18 PM
Every time I see an ad for that game Brink It reminds me of your work man, this cool kinda punk post apocalyptic military world. I dig it, without a doubt.

07-02-2011, 02:45 PM
@Nisaren: Hmm, you're right, I'll keep that in mind for my next batch. And lol...I get my ideas from all over the place, it's a casserole of stuff in my head. I got a lot of people digging 7 heh.

@Sparky: Sooo many people have been saying that recently lmao. Too bad it's already out huh, maybe I coulda made it as concept artist (nahhh). Thanks man.

So after looking at that one thread on drawing clouds, I realized I've never really TRIED to draw clouds, just scribble down shapes.
So with the sun going down outside, I glanced out my window a few times and did this in maybe an hour.
Getting the colors was hard.

07-06-2011, 07:15 PM
Random thumbnails...funny, thumbs are actually harder than drawing a whole character for me.

07-06-2011, 09:10 PM
An yet another branch of drawing that you are good at gunz! I love how even if i dont see the actual mech parts i can imagine them there! The outskirts if the figuers help with the imagined mech parts too! And with my imagination it IS AWESOME! :D

07-07-2011, 07:44 PM
Thanks Ged. I've seen some amazing silhouettes, mine come nowhere near, it's like...a skill or something lol, you actually gotta practice that stuff O.O.

Today I am starting commissions. There will be seven spots open...just because I like that number and my birthday is on a 7.

So anyways, here are the spots.

To secure a spot, contact me at my email: tha_gunzet@yahoo.com. And we'll go over what you want, and the prices and all that jazz. I might not be able to/have the time to do everything anyone asks for, so note that I might reject certain things.

*See my previous pages*

Here is one commission I just got done with.

Initial sketches

And this is a little enviro sketch I started today. Nothing serious, just screwing around with some brushes.

07-08-2011, 06:30 PM
New little environment sketch I started this morning. Finished in like 2 hours maybe using Sketchbook Pro and did some editing in PS.

Trying to make a style for myself when it comes to this kinda thing.

07-09-2011, 07:44 AM
I want to comment on everything!!

I love the painting at the top of the page, think you got the colours buetifully.
Moving to the girl character, great gear as usual (must remember to study the way you do it later on today). I was critical of the face/lips in the initial sketch but then ate my own words when I saw the brilliance of the coloured version. Perhaps the left breast (our left) appears a bit flat on initial impression though.

Really like the environments too. Maybe I would suggest bring out even more details in the closer areas just to get the depth but this is me trying desperatly to offer you something constructive.

07-09-2011, 10:22 PM
oh man Maw-reeeceee
those enviro-sketches are four kinds of awesome.
The lighting really sets the atmosphere :']
good luck on the commissions! c:

07-10-2011, 07:49 AM
YOUR DRAWINGS ARE UGLY AND DON'T EVER DRAW AGAIN CAUSE YOU DON'T HAVE TALENT! is what i want to say to make you stop making me feel so untalented while seeing you draw!

well i'll just try to crit... in ael pic... i think it would be much awesome if you add shadows some more...
i mean another layer for much darker shadow...

07-11-2011, 10:21 AM
Awesome drawings Gunz

07-11-2011, 04:36 PM
And he can even do BGS >A< I HOPE YOUR ARMS FALL OFF!!! ..............i keed and you know it! The only thing thats kinda out of place form is the face on the comish girl. It seems that the face is too small for the head. It looks better in the sketch fase. Still awesom.......and you know it.

07-12-2011, 03:25 AM
Say, is AEL going to be a series or something?
and how much will you be charging for commissions?

07-12-2011, 03:41 AM
These. are. amazing. I don't even. How?? -speechless-

Moar plz.

Random thumbnails...funny, thumbs are actually harder than drawing a whole character for me.

07-15-2011, 02:34 PM
@Scarlet: Thankyou, and yea I was also fretting over the face and overall figure. If you've known me for just a little while, you'd know I rarely, if ever, draw female characters of any sort. So I'm still technically a noob at that stuff haha.

@Erika: xD Thnx Erk, hopefully I'll get some nods >_>'

@Ramiel: Actually in the Ael pic, there was another overlay layer in the psd to make things darker, but I decided to take it out cause it overpowered the texture on the thighs, plus I didn't want it too too dark…had to play things carefully with this piece. The person who commissioned me was…very…picky…

@Cloudy: Thanks Cloudy :)

@Ged: I can sorta do backgrounds, I'm still practicing lool. Cype is still the king of BG's around here I'd say.
Also yea I never got the face exactly perfect on Ael, it was really a challenge, guess I came close. And thanks bro.

@Baron: Nah, she's a character from an RP. I basically just redesigned her. The other character is Reese.
Also I dunno when it comes to prices. Usually depends. Normally I start at around $15 to $25 depending on the complexity of whatever it is I'm drawing and the deadline.

@Tay: xD see that's really weird now, I hate doing silhouettes but they turn out pretty good apparently…I may try some more soon heh, thanks Tay.

So, with all of that said, I once again don't have my laptop, but I should have it back in about a week hopefully.
Instead I've been sitting in the tech lab at college and scribbling up some more speedpaint practices.
Since I'm using a Mac I'm not admin of, I can't access tablet settings, so I can't turn on pressure sensitivity lol, anyways, here's a fresh four.

Been playing around with different settings and atmospheres, but mostly shapes and lighting, and textures.

http://img143.imageshack.us/img143/9339/speedpaintssheet.th.jpg (http://img143.imageshack.us/img143/9339/speedpaintssheet.jpg)

Morning On The Rocks - Wanted to make a rocky desert look but have a bit of greenery/jungle in the pit of it all.
Bombing Run - This one was just an experiment with like, making a scene actually. So I sketched out a jet of some sort trying to make it seem like it just flew past and a bomb of some sort hit the water making a splash. Then there's the dude on the bottom waving a gun...dunno if I made him an enemy or friendly lol.
Watch The Enemy - Got tired of doing mountains and water over and over, so I tried to do this one in the woods. Basic idea was to have some cool lighting against the trees, hide these soldiers in the shadows and make it seem like an army of guys and robots are searching the woods unsuspecting of the two man army in the trees lol.
The Generic Future - This one was just as the name says...

07-15-2011, 05:32 PM
Hey, very interesting. Those totally like scenes out of a movie or video game. XD

It'd be nice to see some more detail on some of these though. Or perhaps some different angles or lighting.

Lookin' forward to seeing more.

07-19-2011, 04:57 PM
Thanks Tay, it's sorta what I was going for heh. And you're right, some different angles would work. But I keep finding myself sticking to one or the other, bleh...well I'll try.

Here's the same sheet with 2 more I did recently. Nothing much I can show due to not having my laptop atm.

http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/9339/speedpaintssheet.th.jpg (http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/9339/speedpaintssheet.jpg)

'This Bear Is METAL'

Pencil and printer paper
Inked with my fresh Microns 0.5 and 0.8
Colored with my moms Prismacolor B-tip markers.
Edited in PS

08-08-2011, 04:52 PM
Woah, I love that mouth/stomach. XD I think it has to do with the really awesome texture of the teeth.

08-08-2011, 07:38 PM
Thanks Tay, it's sorta what I was going for heh. And you're right, some different angles would work. But I keep finding myself sticking to one or the other, bleh...well I'll try.

Here's the same sheet with 2 more I did recently. Nothing much I can show due to not having my laptop atm.

http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/9339/speedpaintssheet.th.jpg (http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/9339/speedpaintssheet.jpg)

i never tried doing this type of drawing before but i do know that it'll be hard for me or long before i can do some thing like that!

08-31-2011, 04:06 PM
Been a while since Ive posted anything. Actually I don't have anything to post because I haven't drawn as often lately. But I did this concept art for some secret side-project for the art director/modeler on the team (working on a game called GoreToon). I don't think he ever used this, so I'm posting it here.

Both of these were done a while ago lol, like maybe a month or two.
Hand drawn of course, I still don't have my laptop lol.

These variations are also for GT. The final design came down to a mix of 2, 3 and 5.

Those looks really awesome.... O.o

09-03-2011, 12:43 PM
o__O go pro. I mean, it's like you hit a really big improvement bump this year.

09-03-2011, 03:13 PM
I just saw my friend do a "TRIPLE FLIP" and it was awesome.........what? i thought you would want to know!!!

09-04-2011, 04:14 PM
It's been too damn long since I've stopped by to tell you how much I wanna have your babies... It's a lot, A WHOLE LOT!

09-04-2011, 09:58 PM
your really taking your style as your name suggest. ganzet= gantz.

09-05-2011, 05:22 AM
I really like the linear designs you've got going. I like how they're not too square, like they tend to be with many artists.

09-07-2011, 09:10 PM
I love love love love LOVE your landscapes

09-18-2011, 03:52 AM
Ok, so late reply is late.
@Bambi: Thankyou :)
@Slurp: It all started early January actually...I don't know how or why, but it did O_O
@Ged: How the hell, I can only do double flips.
@Sparky: Babie(s) are you crazy!? One's the limit here, but thanks.
@Ram: Welll.....you're missing a 'U' in there somewhere xD But thanks haha
@Celes: I try to keep my shapes flowing. I've taken after Clemente Suave, I see him as a master of shape control, and I'd like to follow his works. Thankyou.
@Lea: Thanks a lot...even though you left MT :C

So guys, I haven't drawn much for myself lately. It's been mostly concept work that I can't show without it getting approved for release and all that.
So here's a new model I started up.

For those who have kept up with my many game projects, you should recognize who this is lol.
I finally decided to make a serious attempt at modeling him.
These are viewport captures in Max2010. Turbosmooth modifier is on.

09-20-2011, 10:38 AM
Ofcourse Gunz.... i recognized it...

PSYCHO PLACE GUY, WORM KILLER... i dont remember his name... Sorry...

Did you ever add those new levels?

09-20-2011, 11:10 AM
xD his name's Serj, and his little sidekick is Toast remember o.o

And no...the old project is dead, but I keep telling myself it'll live one day...in some way shape or form, Psycho Place will continue to live!
Maybe I'll get a good team together and finally finish the game.

09-20-2011, 03:28 PM
Get a patent.

09-20-2011, 07:59 PM
.....ok great the games gonna live.... to0 bad for the little comic.
Anyways gunz have any tips or good tuts for using z brush. Just got it and im overwhelmed by the Avg. cr. and all other stuff thats all technicy and all i could sculpt out was a poorly looking face T.T

09-21-2011, 08:04 PM
I'm working on some new tutorials for Zbrush 4 soon. I'll probably charge like 5 bucks cause I can't just give stuff out free anymore lol. As for tips, I can spare some.

Started this about an hour ago. It's a flag base or something. Er, practice in general.

Work in progress render.

Started as a random doodle in the GB. Then quickly turned into a badass collab.

Design and editing = Me
Inking and coloring = Linz

Holy alien zombies Batman! I need to play Dead Space now :I Awesome colab and your 3d skills make me sick. . . In a good way :b

I'm really curious as to what Cype is on about. XD I'm pretty sure it had to do with some pre-crit anatomical error, though, so no big deal. XD I really like those falling-apart arms. It gives me some more technique ideas for a project I'm about to start here for a University showing.

And Serj. SERRRRRJ. That is so awesome. I like the model. :D

Nice, I like your style Gunz...

@Ged: It had to go bro.
@Cype: Haha, yea...I noticed it too >_>
@Kasey: Man, I only realized it resembled something from Dead Space after I was finished. Also thanks.
@Ceef: Cype was talking about this.
Also thanks, probably never gonna finish the Serj model but ehhhh.

@Kaspar: Thanks mang.

So I might've gotten out of my art block tonight. It's been a while, but FINALLY I feel like I"m back in the game, I'm so happy I'm even posting a WIP of my newest piece.

The hands and minigun are my main challenges.

10-10-2011, 05:30 PM
Finished it this morning. The hands were hard as hell...so I know those areas are all wrong lol.

Still came out pretty nice bro, seen as gatling guns are a pain in the ass to draw.
by the way, was this inspired by UT3 or something? or is this straight from your mind, because it looks quitte familiar to me...

10-11-2011, 11:39 AM
Thanks man, and nah this is straight out my head...which undoubtedly is fueled by Gears and UT, so some influence might've snuck in there.

Chaingun man is really intimidating, among your most menacing creations methinks

10-14-2011, 11:14 PM
@Baron: Inorite? I'm hittin' that.
@Sy: He's also gay.

This is a little experimental model I'm working on atm.
Testing my modeling skills, it's pretty fun, all the little details I can add.

10-17-2011, 03:15 PM
Oh, wow, haven't seen your art in awhile and gotta say im impressed by you :00 And lol that's a pretty house right there...Man that roof is bumpy xD Maybe you could've made the tiles a bit less...intense if you know what I mean xD Other than that keep it awesome as always :]

10-17-2011, 03:23 PM
Thanks Tets, and also I was going for this kind of style with the roof tiles

But I get what you're saying. I may try a few other styles.
