This is not a discussion, debate, or argument about which is the best, but simply a place to state what you personally enjoy the most.

For me it's got to be:

Ao No Exorcist, Bakuman, Gantz, Kekkaishi and One Piece.

Fakku.

Monster (anime, I never read the manga but I've been getting strong hints I should)
Hokuto no Ken (anime, same thing here)
Now and Then, Here and There (anime)
Kenichi (both manga and anime)
FMA (both anime and all the manga)

I would add Ichi the Killer but I've only seen the live action movie.

Delphinus
05-12-2012, 03:36 PM
The live action movie is torture porn. It misses out many of the intricacies of the manga's plot.

Monster's anime follows the manga really closely, but it's not very well animated and moves at about one episode per chapter. I would've preferred if they'd condensed every three or so chapters into an episode, it would've moved closer to the pace of the manga.

Makes sense that Sylux would be the only other person I know who likes Monster, though...

Did you think Johan deserved to die? That's what Monster's about, after all. The theme is "Does anyone, no matter how bad their crimes, deserve to die?" Tenma says no, Johan says yes.

Besides, I prefer Wolfgang Grimmer to Johan in some ways.

05-24-2012, 02:10 PM
I remember watching The Professional in Jr. High back in the late 80's. I didn't like the 2nd movie so much but when the series came out I was like "Hell yeah!" Duke Togo's the baddest dude. Top ranked assassin in the world, does hits with a modified M16, he's a Mac with the ladies & never misses a mark. I can think of only 2 dudes as tough as he is in manga/anime. Ogami Itto from Lone Wolf & Cub and Guts from Bezerker.

But Duke's got 'em beat with style & swag.

Did you see the episode when he got sent to prison, broke out with some gangster, gained his trust & then killed him because he was the mark all along? Duke Togo is the shizznick man.

Gaff
05-24-2012, 02:47 PM
Hah, yeah - I've only seen about half the series so far, but I think that prison break ep was one of the best ones. I liked the one where he smuggles a gun into the sports stadium inside a balloon as well. My only real complaint about the two films was that they didn't really touch on Duke's ability to do ridiculous things like that and make them completely believable.

Black_Shaggie
05-24-2012, 03:18 PM
Yup...that ballon episode was pretty awesome too. The Professional was like an introduction to Duke. That second film was blah...but the show certainly delves into the character & his personality. He's an excellent example of the 'anti-hero' archetype in my opinion. Sure, he's killer. But he's got a lot of honor too.

Man .hack has some pretty bad gameplay especially compared to .hack//G.U. But they were talking about the manga focused around chibi Kite and Blackrose, who are brother and sister and won a contest in The World.

JJJorgie

Oh, i was just talking about all of .Hack in general.

Bacon_Barbarian

One Piece, Shaman King, Blue Exorcist, Gantz, Kekkaishi

Demonfyre
05-25-2012, 07:26 AM
@JJJorgie - :D I think its just a clever idea of a story about an MMO, that is what captivated me though :P

@Sylux - Yeah the original 4 game series were a bit... repetitive to say the least :/ but I don't really play the games. I just read the manga's and watch the anime's/OVA's

@Bacon_Barbarian - Is Blue Exorcist any good? I've had it suggested to me before but I've never really payed much attention to it :/

Sylux
05-25-2012, 09:46 AM
Ugggh I hated most of the anime and manga

Regantor
05-25-2012, 10:47 AM
Gantz

I can't decide whither Gantz is like, incredibly overrated or not... I mean, I bought all of the anime and manga when I was younger so I can hardly complain too much, and all of the black comedy and shock value does remind me alot of No More Heroes...

But those doofy endings just explain absolutely bugger all, and make all the time that the characters spent angsting a little pointless.

Not saying it's awful or anything. Hell, it's intentionally awful. Just looking back, I can't really say that I remember anything good happening except for pure shock value. And butter dog.

Bacon_Barbarian
05-25-2012, 04:41 PM
Demonfrye: Blue Exorcist is fantastic. Absolutely fantastic. The only bad thing about it is that it's a monthly manga and not a weekly one.

Reg: I haven't watched the anime, but the manga hasn't had a doofy ending. There is actually some character growth as it goes.

OHHHH. You mean doofy in that people get brought back whole if they didn't actually die. Eh. It works.

Demonfyre
05-25-2012, 06:01 PM
@Bacon_Barbarian - Ok :D i'll go look it up on manga storm and read it now :P

@Sylux - Fair enough :D is there a particular thing you didn't like about them?

Sylux
05-25-2012, 08:09 PM
Yeah, I couldn't enjoy .hack//GIFT because I never finished .hack//SIGN since it was so awfully boring. I enjoyed 4koma, though, I think it's hilarious and I like to try and re-read it often. The most disgusting thing was .hack//G.U.+ because it missed out on the enormous plot details of the Epitaph Avatars as actually things that the users used to fight, not just summoned (in fact, it's a very, very large part of the game Vol. 1: Rebirth) and that Haseo was reverted to Twin Blade when he was data drained by Kite of the Azure Sky in the games. Legend of the Twilight was good, though, I liked it, and I've heard some O.K. things about A.I. Buster.

Demonfyre
05-25-2012, 08:20 PM
I didn't bother watching .hack//GIFT, the animation really annoys me >.> and yeah .hack//SIGN is very slow but it does pick up a bit more towards the second half, I suppose it also depends on whether your more into the interactions of characters and their development and stuff. I still need to finish .hack//G.U.+ but wasn't it supposed to be just a simple manga adaption hence why it missed that crucial detail? Actually I haven't played the G.U. game series, mainly because I haven't been able to acquire them as of yet :( and aren't the A.I. Busters light novels like .hack//Another Birth?

jubeh

Not saying it's awful or anything. Hell, it's intentionally awful. Just looking back, I can't really say that I remember anything good happening except for pure shock value. And butter dog.

If you're talking about the anime its just awful yeah. They basically took what was already a ridiculous silly story and turned up the depravity up to 11. The manga goes in a wildly different direction and it becomes an epic about a boy who finds something to live for and what he needs to do to stay alive.

It never stops being stupid though. I mean vampires.

Sylux

No clue lol. But yeah, .hack//G.U.+ was supposed to be a total adaptation, since honestly there is still a significant bit of grinding in the video games, although it is quite tapered from the original series. The total level cap for Conglomerate is Lv. 150, but for the original Project .hack it was 99. Considering it's spread out over four games, that means a lot of grinding for each level, whereas G.U. is three games, and the level cap starts at 50 and is increased by 50 each game, making more levels, and less time to reach each level, so less time to prepare for the next major plot development area or whatever.

Demonfyre
05-25-2012, 09:07 PM
^They sound like a good series of games :D i'm gonna see if i'm able to hunt any copies down again :P oh and does that mean your progress gets passed onto the next game in the series when you play it?

Sylux
05-25-2012, 09:10 PM
Yeah if you actually finish the game and get the data flag. And if you have any data flags from Project .hack, you get a small but pretty special little Easter egg in .hack Conglomerate. But the original series is extremely expensive. You're going to be shelling out heavy money, like in the $300-$400 area for good copies, all the games included (.hack//G.U. isn't that hard to find).

Eh. There was alot of batshag silly stuff in Gantz generally, I don't think you can say that vampires are more silly than an Onion man or a giant evil version of one of those 8-balls that you ask questions... But that's what I was saying about the 'intentional terribleness' anyhow. Part of the charm. B-movie-ness.

And like I said, I don't think it's a total trainwreck or anything. Just eh. Maybe there is just some anti-nostalgia going on.

Not really sure what to reccomend anime-wise, through, since I haven't really seen alot of those series. Maybe Claymore is worth a watch? Really quite melodramatic, and I doubt it will become a new fav or anything, but it's a pretty seinen-shonen sort of violent actiony medieval thing. Kinda suprised that Cowboy Bebop isn't on that list considering the subject matter, too. Wolf's Rain is another one which I thought was pretty good, at least way past the furry sorta connotations that you may be expecting.

I guess I just tend to reccommend anything by studio bones, through, alot of the time. :/ *scratches head*

I've all of Claymore. It's cool. Not creepy enough for me though like another & future diary. I'm on this supernatural/paranormal kick right now idk...

As far as Bebop, its awesome but, I've seen it way too many times. Same thing with Ghost In the Shell (besides I think Appleseed is Shirow's greatest body of work). I've never heard of Wolf's Rain though.

Tell me, is it creepy? An example of creepy to me, would be something like Paranoia Agent or maybe Hell Girl. But they're not as out there as Another Or Future Diary.

As far as Gun

Gaff
02-04-2013, 01:54 PM
It's probably due to the inherent furry-ness, but I couldn't take Wolf's Rain seriously at all.

Kind of a shot in the dark as I haven't seen it, but what about Shiki? It has a rather wacky approach to hairstyling, but I often hear it likened to classic paranormal detective series Twin Peaks.

Regantor
02-04-2013, 02:33 PM
Hurm. Well, Wolf's Rain is certainly apocalyptic, but not really 'creepy'... Not the sort of headfuck, say, Serial Experiments Lain is designed to deliver. But yeah.

Thinking about it now that I've just recently started watching it again, Ergo Proxy might actually be a pretty good fit. It's a cyberpunky detectivey slow burner that is a bit hard to reccomend to most, but I think it has the right kind of mystery plot to fit in with what you mentioned before.

Black_Shaggie

I started Serial Exp. Lain but only on youtube (which sucks for viewing). Jubeh suggested the same anime so, if two of yous dudes think it's up my alley then it's worth a real look. Wish it was on Hulu+ or Netflix though. That's actually fairly creepy. Ergo Proxy eh? Gotta check that out too.
