View Full Version : Disappointing video games that were a waste of your (or your parents) paycheck.

We've all done this before. We see the advertisement on TV or hear about a new game from a friend and think to ourselves "I've gotta buy it!" Then you smash your piggy bank or swear to your parents that it is your birthday, head on down to the nearest Game Stop (since you're too cool for Wal-Mart) and hand them the $50-$60 for this new "awesome" game. You rush home and spend hours of time you should have spent on homework and studying playing your new game only to find out that it is CRAP! You can take it back, but of course you never get all of your money back for a used game. Tell me what disappointing, crappy games you have wasted money and time on.
I've got three that I wasted my (I mean my parents) money on. Sims 2 Pets for the DSi, Dragon Ball Z Sagas, and Dragon Ball Z the Legacy of Goku. All three were boring and the game play was very annoying.

Changed the spelling in the title. Thanks, Fenn!

On topic, Nintendogs. Fun for like a week, then blah.

Also Hey You Pikachu. Now that I think about it, anything that attempted voice recognition.

Metal Gear Solid; Peace Walker.

I kinda liked it at first, but it didn't take me too long to realise that most of the 'features' on the back of the box were half-truths, and cutscene deaths are a bit too damn frequent. This is comming from a guy who liked Acid.

Final Fantasies XIII and XIV. I bought both out of long time fandom to the series, and because I was yearning for the XI goodtimes to come back into my life after Abbyssea killed the game dead. I'm sad at how bad Square Enix's gameplay has become.

Lost Planet 2. I basically had to force myself to play it, and the only thing that kept me going was the character design, and Akrid. After that, I found it wasn't SO bad, just broken in a few spots, good thing I only paid 20 for it.

I think this is mostly a case of riding the hype train. If you weren't expecting much to begin with, then you won't suffer as much disappointment. With that said, I think console games need more demo's. It's a lot of money to plop down for a video game you'll only regret buying after awhile. U_U

What's the point of grinding in XIII when you're just gonna get your ass handed to you for the most part. Most disappointing game I have ever bought, has probably got to be DNF. I'm actually dissappointed that Inafune has left Capcom, that means that alot of games are gonna get boring from them. And with Square Enix, they are suffering sequelitis. I quit playing FF after X-2 until XIII and now I'm wishing I had stuck with not giving into my fandom.

What's the point of grinding in XIII when you're just gonna get your ass handed to you for the most part.

There were only 2 "hard" enemies on the entire game, so its better said "why to grind, if you are going to have everyone ass in your hands".

I'm actually dissappointed that Inafune has left Capcom, that means that alot of games are gonna get boring from them.

I think its the best, Inafune could change the way on how Studios works and how publics looks at game. It will be very interesting to have the eyes on him right now.

And with Square Enix, they are suffering sequelitis. I quit playing FF after X-2 until XIII and now I'm wishing I had stuck with not giving into my fandom.

The problem is the "new" director. The guy want to make Uncharted games with Final Fantasy name.

T1B3R1U5
01-20-2012, 05:43 PM
Well for the grinding on XIII is if you didn't take the time to lvl your char's up then they're is no fucking point to even fight. I got tired of the ATB gauge shit as well. And why the hell make the Uncharted games in the name of FF? Man, that's alot of info to take in from your last post there Clock xD lolz.

ClockHand
01-20-2012, 05:48 PM
Well the guy basically wants to make the rpg genre more cinematic and active, reason why they made the real time battle. Which I find awful because you can resume it mostly in "libra > auto-atack > auto-atack > auto-atack > paradigma > auto-atack....".

T1B3R1U5
01-20-2012, 06:31 PM
Yeah, it was alright...until I hit 120+ hours on it I aint fighting. All the battles I was in were like this: AUTO>>>AUTO>>>AUTO>>>Paradigm>>>GF or what ever the fuck they're called>>and then AUTO Then finish. Is it just me or was Barthandaelus easy as fucking pie. Even with low lvl char's.

Black and White are weird. No one seems to have taken the middle ground in regards to them. Old fans either seem to see it as the end or a much needed reboot. I see it as the latter myself.

I remember playing Damnation. God did it suck.
Weapons are unbalanced, friendly AI is total shit meaning your allies will rush into battle kamikaze style disregarding all surounding danger like mines and enemies armed to the teeth. you won't believe how many times i had to reload my save at those moments!
and to top things off there isn't even a decent story, and besides that your weapons get taken away from you not once, not twice but THREE FUCKING TIMES! what the fuck, man?!

@ Bacon - I'm kinda neutral about Black and White. There were things I liked about them and things I didn't. They were fun, anyway.

Waste of time games? Well, back in the 1990's, my dad bought me a PC racing game called Re-Volt. It was pretty awesome, and even when I play it now I like it. In the early 2000's, the same company (Acclaim, if I remember correctly) made a PS2 racer called RC Revenge Pro. We saw videos: you could race boats and cars and that was pretty awesome. About ten years later, we finally got a PS2. We hurriedly bought RC Revenge Pro. It sucked. And thus, our family learned the value of looking up reviews.

It was awful but we had a good time co-op'ing through it and laughing at how enemies would just sort of stand there as we shot them repeatedly.

Well of course it's going to be boring, each addition to the series simply layered content and depth onto the first one. Pkmn RBY has no abilities, no breeding, static animations, no held items, physical/special attacks grouped by type, and lots of missing attacks like weather 'n stuff. After playing Black and White, yeah, combat's probably gonna be boring. The entire series, in the end, is a combination of menu screens and RNG anyway.

My worse purchase in some months has to be Steet Fighter 4. Here I was looking for an experience that I had back in the day with SF2 Turbo, and instead I get a game that demands you be either the creator of the game, or some type of cyborg in order to get anywhere close to good. And then you got the cheapest AI since Half Life 2. I still play it though, mostly cause it looks good, and I can occasionally win on east mode :/

Reg just finshed the Resident Evil 1 remake for the GameCube after years of putting it off...

Probally gonna get murdered for this, but what the hell happened on the second disk? It basically goes from being one of the best point-and-click horror games in existance (with some zombie bashing elements), to an extremely lousy zombie shooter almost instantly.

Seriously, during the last boss you can just stand there, shooting and healing. Having to fight off basic zombies at the start of the game with the survival knife was way harder. Even the voice acting and the integrity of the plot goes to hell. It's like, "Oh yeah, these labs have a self destruct mechanism, don'cha know!".

Don't get me wrong, it's still a classic, esspecially at the midpoint of the game. But seriously. The controls were never the strong point, so why did they decide it needed an action movie ending? If the original PS1 version does the same thing, I'd suprised that it became a franchise at all.

Geh.

I'm gonna go make myself a jill sandwich.

well, ive never played the gc remake but

The title includes a variety of new gameplay elements, environments, and story details as well as state of the art visuals. Shinji Mikami has stated that the remake is "70% different from the original."
so yeah i'm pretty sure the hell i went through with RE when i was 7 did not include any kind of lousy zombie shooter elements (though i think the puzzles were kinda ridiculous in RE1)

compared to the older games... like Twisted Metal Black...this game had very little content as far as story content goes..

Sniper Elite 1

Seriously, only the first few missions are actually fun.
after that the whole realism aspect of the game is pretty much flushed down the drain and it's pretty much your average run and gunner.
oh and it takes like 8 missions before you actually get the only good sniper rifle in the game.
i certainly hope Sniper Elite V2 is going to do A LOT better than the first one.

This: true.
Even the attempt at a moral conflict was awful. In ToS1 they had "Conformity to preserve peace, or freedom despite the conflict?" In TOS2 they had "Your best friend or the rest of the world?" Granted the latter conflict was in 1, but every time it came up the heroes reluctantly concluded on the latter.

WHAT San Andreas is the best GTA to date!

Also on the topic.
The newest Medal of Honor kinda sucked. But I only paid like 5 bucks for it anyway, and beat it. But it was just a blatant wannabe CoD clone 'realistic' style. And the multiplayer was built on a totally different engine, which was Frostbite. So that made it feel and look almost exactly like Bad Company 2, except the guns suck.

That depends on taste of games,
for example I have yet to play any of the games that you listed there cause they do not interest me.

Granted with san andreas The size of the game world and the amount of stuff to do is twice that of previous
GTA games if not more.
but for example, the RC missions,

The only GTA I've ever completely beaten was GTAIII. San Andreas is the best imo, but the game itself is boring as hell. So it just boiled down to launching the game, throwing in my usual set of cheat codes, snagging a cool looking car, modding it in a garage. And killing everyone and anything, then trying to outrun the police/military. That was where the fun was at.
