View Full Version : Sylux and Jaidurn: The Ubermen?!

Sylux
12-20-2011, 12:53 AM
These are a journal of my transition to the Uberman Sleep Schedule. It's supposed to be a very, very tough transition, and I need to find some way to document my sort of trials, I suppose, along with my excitement in trying to find time for this schedule in my daily school life for the next 3 full days including today as of 12.20.2011.

12.20.2011 - 12:47AM

I'm starting the Uberman Sleep Schedule at 1AM -5 GMT. I'll be sleeping at 1AM, 5AM, 9AM, 1PM, 5PM, and 9PM, each for 30 minutes a piece. I do, though, have school tomorrow, and the next day, and half a day after that. It will be interesting to see where these last days will lead me academically. I will be traveling in Italy during my transition, so I will attempt to log my adventures in trying to fit in naps during tours.

So ... What are you going to do during the School year? And what are the benefits of this?

GunZet
12-20-2011, 01:30 AM
Being Uber.

Sylux
12-20-2011, 01:37 AM
I am going to shift my sleep schedule to 3PM, 7PM, 11PM, 3AM, 7AM, and 11AM in January. The benefits are:

More energy during the 4 waking hours
More time to do stuff
Supposed healthier feeling
Desire to eat properly
Wonderful waking hours

There are some numerable drawbacks, but they are worth it to me.

--JOURNAL--

12.20.2011 - 1:35AM

The first period of sleeping time was utterly terrible. I entered it with a positive attitude, and exited it with no sleep or rest, and now a bit of doubt about the next few rounds of sleep. Perhaps it is my empty stomach? I shall snack on vegetables in the hours before my sleeping time to see if that should solve my problem.

Celestial-Fox
12-20-2011, 02:21 AM
Oh, wow, my roommate Ubermanns about twice a year. It's super cool that you're trying it, Sy. (:

I practice a biphasic sleep schedule sometimes because it lines up with my natural inclinations better (6pm-10pm; 4am-9am). My mom dragged me to a doctor over it, and they said it was just fine. Good luck, dude, and whatever you do, don't skip a nap. You will pay bigtime for it.

Sylux
12-20-2011, 02:25 AM
That's pretty interesting! I've always heard of people trying the Uberman for time or the Dymaxion for a challenge (or the Monophasic because they're squares), but never a normal Biphasic or Everyman. How is it? Do you feel well-rested?

Celestial-Fox
12-20-2011, 02:34 AM
Yeah, I feel totally fine. I mean, I try to run strictly monophasic when I go to stay with my family (because my parents have a fit about how I sleep), but I always get severely screwed up. Today I slept mono from 4am-4pm, and it was horrid.

What dictates when I sleep are my downtime hours. I choose to sleep when I'm most tired and/or unmotivated. After some research on it about two years ago, I found out that my segmented sleep cycle is fairly normal in the climate I live in. Alaska is getting about 5 hours of daylight this time of year, and some guy named Wehr did a study and found that polyphasic sleeping is more common in people who live in places with less than 10 hours of daylight.

Sylux
12-20-2011, 02:36 AM
That's interesting to the max! Perhaps if this Uberman works out I'll move to Greenland.

Celestial-Fox
12-20-2011, 02:39 AM
Ha, good luck to you, then. (: A good way to get through the rough patches is to find an online buddy (preferably in a different timezone for when you're up in the zombie hours of night) that's willing to talk you though the sleepy times.

Sylux
12-20-2011, 02:43 AM
You mean like Jaidurn? :P I'm all jk, that lazy bum won't do anything but play Minecraft. Kodos seems to be up at these ungodly hours, though, so perhaps we shall discuss things when he is not busy!

Celestial-Fox
12-20-2011, 02:51 AM
Haha, Kodos, Zi, and I have tons of fun in the wee hours. I'm sure he could keep you awake. XD

Sylux
12-20-2011, 05:56 AM
Yes, Kodos certainly kept me awake. Especially at 5:05 this morning... yet I bear no grudge.

12.20.2011 - 5:52AM

I have, since a rude awakening to very loud sounds at 5:30 this morn', showered and otherwise prepared myself for another day of compulsory public education attendance, and I can say with the utmost certainly that the nap felt bloody fantastic. I fell asleep moments after receiving an instant message from a great brother of mine at 5:05, and slept soundly through :30. I now feel like crap, albeit very warm from the shower and cozy from my bathrobe, and do not truly wish to eat much at all. Perhaps I shall save my breakfast and snack upon it throughout my later and other nap-less hours. The next update will be after an unruly day of school...

Celestial-Fox
12-20-2011, 06:22 AM
Good idea with the food, bro. Eating throughout the day keeps the metabolism going and keeps you more awake.

CypressDahlia
12-20-2011, 09:37 AM
Supposedly you won't feel rested unless you get a certain amount of REM, so sleeping for 30 minutes I don't think won't ever make you feel "rested" so much as it will just relax and briefly energize you.

Fenn
12-20-2011, 11:55 AM
Too soon for a fanfic?

Sylux
12-20-2011, 01:46 PM
Supposedly you won't feel rested unless you get a certain amount of REM, so sleeping for 30 minutes I don't think won't ever make you feel "rested" so much as it will just relax and briefly energize you.
If you consistently get 3 hours of sleep total daily your body will force itself within minutes from level 1 to level 5 REM. That is why the transition is so rough.

Also fenn what the heck do you mean

Bacon_Barbarian
12-20-2011, 03:01 PM
He's going to write slash about when your sleeping.

jaidurn
12-20-2011, 03:25 PM
My journey shall start at the next round of Sylux's sleeping. Honestly, I'll probably have this crazy hard time achieving it, but seeing as we're aligning our schedules I should be able to have him make sure I come out of my sleep with a few brisk texts. I may have all the time in the world on my hands, but sleep feels like this dead zone for me, thus comes in the Uberman. This may be the bumpiest ride I'll have ever taken.

Sylux
12-20-2011, 03:36 PM
Oh god so is this him like taking my journal accounts and adding more story along with a romance interest? That would be interesting and would probably motivate me to continue the Uberman for a very long time.

12.20.2011 - 3:34PM

I'm transititoning into my school uberschedule sooner than I had foreseen. I slept briefly from 3 until now, my arrival at the dentist's. It was a tad refreshing, though I wish it could have been the full fourty minutes, as Jaidurn's friend had suggested we update our hours to. Jaidurn has decided, after much prodding from me, to join in my uberman project. He did not join my 3PM, and though he will try, he will most likely not be able to fall asleep at 7PM EST, given he only woke at noon my time. We will attempt to sync our Uberman schedules perfectly, and we will continually text and IM each other in our waking hours to keep each other honest. Hopefully this won't be as tough with my best buddy at my side. I'm looking forward to the rest at 7, too!

Bacon_Barbarian
12-20-2011, 03:39 PM
Well, more ero then romance ... But yeah.

jaidurn
12-20-2011, 03:42 PM
Sylux. You didn't prod me. I decided that because you were doing it, I'd do it.

Sylux
12-20-2011, 03:46 PM
Well I did bug you a bit about it. Also lemme see that revised schedule you want.

Celestial-Fox
12-20-2011, 03:51 PM
Cype: successful Uberman sleepers feel entirely rested when adjusted. One nonbeliever tried it out, actually liked it, but had to quit after a year because his wife didn't like the midnight alarms.

And JaiLux, you're going to do this during school next semester...?

Sylux
12-20-2011, 03:53 PM
Well we're not exactly adjusted, are we, Cype?

Yeah I'm gonna do it during my school year but Jaidurn has graduated so he's good as far as time goes.

Celestial-Fox
12-20-2011, 03:55 PM
Oh, cool. It was easy for my roommate to do it back when we were in high school because we had an hour-long break in the school day.

jaidurn
12-20-2011, 03:57 PM
So. My sleeping schedule will be like so:
PST. 4 AM, 10 AM, 4 PM, 10 PM.
Each for an hour.
My body is ready.

GunZet
12-20-2011, 03:58 PM

jaidurn
12-20-2011, 04:02 PM
Gunz: I will achieve greatness.

Seefy: Haha. Thanks :3
I'm probably going to partition my awake time into different activities to keep my mind busy, and one of them may require help from people @_@

Celestial-Fox
12-20-2011, 04:04 PM
I think it's funny how I'm the only person who knows first-hand about the legitimacy of this project. XD You guys will do fine, especially since you're teamed up. (:

And oooh, that sounds interesting. Whatcha thinkin' about?

jaidurn
12-20-2011, 04:10 PM
5AM - 9:50AM:
Reading, most likely. Some writing if I feel like it.

11AM - 3:50PM:
Gaming/Working on Astral. Probably the time where I'll be on the internet the most.

5PM - 9:50PM:
Drawing/Studying things for art. Fashion is what I'm currently studying, even without my tablet. Oh, I wouldn't mind some more Tumblr links to fashion blogs, if you have any off hand.

11PM - 3:50AM:
Talking to Sylux. Finish up pages for my Webcomic. Assess how the day has gone. Robotics. Pretty much whatever I'm in the mood for.

Sylux
12-20-2011, 04:20 PM
Seefy I couldn't picture a better support person. You da best man :3

Do have a Tumblr account, Jai? O: Tumblr is actually great for keeping you awake. If you know how to use the site properly, you honestly can't dislike it. It's an aggregate feed of only things you like. (It's like craaack. XD) I post (http://celestial-fox.tumblr.com/) fashion, interior design, music, body modification, and photography, primarily. This list. It's amazing.
I am now following people. Lots of people.

Celestial-Fox
12-20-2011, 05:38 PM
Whoops, goodbye, need for sleep. XD And that's just like a tiny fraction of what I follow. o///o (I'm following more than 358 people.)

I JUST LIKE THREW UP IN THIS THREAAAD. :U

jaidurn
12-20-2011, 05:58 PM
I may need to go through what you follow. @_@

IDK the way ur writing it it sounds like a journey rather than a record...just making a poorly concieved joke.

Also what are those so-called negatives you are talking about?

Sylux
12-20-2011, 07:55 PM
I don't know what you're talking about and I'm too damn tired to figure it out. I slept for 40 minutes, like Jaidurn had suggested, and I feel fucking horrible. I want to give up everything and kill the world. I will try sleeping for smaller amounts of time again.

Celestial-Fox
12-20-2011, 08:04 PM
I may need to go through what you follow. @_@
My Likes page has 10,000 posts that may be interesting. ;D

And Sy, agggh, noo, pick one increment of sleep. You're screwing yourself up by readjusting times! D:

Sylux
12-20-2011, 08:16 PM
I'm sticking with half an hour, dammit.

Celestial-Fox
12-20-2011, 08:59 PM
Good. Stand by it.

Edit: Wait, you're only sleeping four times a day? @______@ Duuuudes, up it to 6 and do half hours. Otherwise I don't think you'll make it. D:

jaidurn
12-20-2011, 09:19 PM
Eh, I dunno, I've heard of guys only doing it for 2 hours a day. If anything I'll go for 6 and work down to four.

Celestial-Fox
12-20-2011, 09:20 PM
Yeah, start big, then you can work your way down. Gosh, I wish I could have told you about that sooner, but I didn't catch it! D:

jaidurn
12-20-2011, 09:24 PM
Lol. I've just heard so many recommendations. @_@

Celestial-Fox
12-20-2011, 10:49 PM
Yeah, everyone does it a different way. But it's definitely a good idea to start with more sleep and go from there.

Sylux
12-20-2011, 11:59 PM
I write, defeated, from my bed of slumber. I was caught by my mother, who demands I sleep properly. Unfortunately, I must oblige, for my stepfather arrives in town tomorrow and I'm afraid of him however it will be picked up when he leaves back for Nevada

GunZet
12-21-2011, 12:25 AM
What's the point of this again?

Psy
12-21-2011, 12:30 AM
I remember hearing omething about if you don't sleep at least 4hrs a day you start losing brain cells by the thousands or something.

Bacon_Barbarian
12-21-2011, 12:30 AM
BUT IT MAKES YOU UBER!

EDIT: Wait. What if it's 4 exactly? Then what?

Celestial-Fox
12-21-2011, 12:50 AM
What's the point of this again?
Maximize wakefulness. Lots of college students are on the Uberman sleep cycle.

Psy: I believe it's talking about REM sleep.

Sy: Awww, that's too bad. :< My mom throws fits over my sleeping, too. :/ When does he leave for Nevada?

GunZet
12-21-2011, 01:31 AM
Hm, I've never heard of it. Doesn't seem like I'd ever do it though, lol. I'm good with my 'going to sleep at 3am and waking up at 7' schedule. Well uh... good luck, and may your hearts and brains stay alive and well.

Sylux
12-21-2011, 02:38 PM
He leaves in January, but I want to try again tonight. I'll be more subtle, and perhaps work with iPhone programs.

Celestial-Fox
12-21-2011, 11:19 PM
Gooood luck. Haha.

jaidurn
12-24-2011, 02:54 PM
So I started doing the Uberman. I failed as hard as failures go. I mean, I naturally started sleeping on the schedule in the beginning. Like I was good for two days at staying on the schedule. Then, I hung out with friends and missed one nap. I then worked for my mum and missed the next nap. I then slept for like 12 hours. I need to really work on my willpower.

Celestial-Fox
12-24-2011, 03:17 PM
Missing any nap is like suicide. DX

GunZet
12-24-2011, 03:22 PM
But then wouldn't that be an eternal nap?

jaidurn
12-24-2011, 03:42 PM
Gunzet, lets put it this way. Missing a nap is like your favorite item snapping in so many pieces that you can't fix it. Ever.

GunZet
12-24-2011, 04:14 PM
Sorta like your tablet?

jaidurn
12-24-2011, 04:40 PM

Whats this jai, smashing your tablets to pieces?

jaidurn
12-24-2011, 05:02 PM
I DID NO SUCH THING.
I-it just sorta fell a-apart. :'(

Sylux
12-27-2011, 07:15 PM
Like ur faic

jaidurn
12-28-2011, 05:29 PM
Man, you don't even know how I feel. I haven't talked to you for a while and my first pet died on Christmas. :C

Oh, but I've managed to get on the schedule. I'm enjoying it for the most part. Kinda sluggish for a couple hours after waking up, though.

Celestial-Fox
12-30-2011, 04:36 AM
Woah surprised you're still at it.

jaidurn
12-30-2011, 03:38 PM
I'm not a quitter. @_@

If I was, then I wouldn't even get out of bed.

GunZet
12-30-2011, 03:49 PM
Inorite, not like you gave up on building a robot of any sort, I mean, that's so not you.

Sylux
12-30-2011, 09:55 PM
He actually was reading a robotics book just the other night.

Celestial-Fox
12-30-2011, 09:59 PM

Sho
01-03-2012, 03:56 AM
What are you making some sort of remote control gunman?

Sylux
01-03-2012, 02:00 PM
No he is trying to make a full-scale functional Lagann that can run fast as balls and has a cool speaker and some kinda onboard custom OS

Bacon_Barbarian
01-03-2012, 02:04 PM
You're going to run Ubuntu? Dear mother of God.

Sylux
01-03-2012, 02:31 PM
Lolno we're gonna run Dai-Gurren OS

Sho
01-03-2012, 02:39 PM
What the fuck. Now I'm interested.

Delphinus
01-03-2012, 03:56 PM
use solaris and make it powered by coffee

Sylux
01-03-2012, 05:01 PM
Yeah and I can operate it using an omni-tool

Okay this is just getting ridiculous

Sho
01-03-2012, 05:37 PM
Man, controlling a ganmen is all about the Spirit OS. Gotta put your soul into it.

Sylux
01-03-2012, 05:40 PM
It will be a mass effect drive-core run on coffee controlled by a drill-shaped Omni-tool. Yes, that's about right.

jaidurn
01-04-2012, 10:46 AM
Totally.

So, last night I missed my 3 hour nap. Missing a nap can make you hate everyone you like and kill everyone you hate. I mean, I've never been this tired. Ever.

Bacon_Barbarian
01-04-2012, 10:50 AM
So, wht will you do to your dear husband? D:

Wow I didn't even know this was a thing. I've been biphasic (4pm-8pm; 2am-5am) sleeping unwittingly for years. I thought I was just a night owl...

...dunno if I have the calmness of mind to do Ubermanns.

Keep it up Sy!

jaidurn
01-04-2012, 12:15 PM
Bacon, I didn't even touch him. I just talked to him because he knows how it feels to miss a nap.

Sylux

Thanks! If you ever decide to try it, though, start on a long break from work/school, ideally about 9 days. A 3-day weekend could possibly suffice, but I wouldn't recommend it, although I have done it for the sake of scheduling. I'm very tempted to stop the Uberman while I'm sick, but I won't. Jaidurn, last night I said I was going to sleep monophasically, but the truth is that I actually missed 2 naps in a row and was very very irratable. I didn't want to say something that would make you angry, but so far today I've had all my naps since 3AM and I'm ready to do some intensive 3d modeling work. We gonna get dat tentacle done. :3

jaidurn
01-04-2012, 02:41 PM
Oh cool man, so you'll do work while I'm a zombie.

01-04-2012, 02:42 PM

jaidurn
01-04-2012, 02:53 PM
Well, I don't have a computer that can run Zbrush anymore. :\
Also, I'm the programmer. Not the artist. lololol

Sylux
01-04-2012, 02:53 PM
I just used it last night, actually

Celestial-Fox
01-05-2012, 11:27 PM
Are you two still truckin'?

Sylux
01-05-2012, 11:40 PM
You bet and it's getting better each day

Celestial-Fox
01-05-2012, 11:43 PM
And how's it going to work with school?

Sylux
01-06-2012, 12:17 AM
It works great school starts at 7:20 AM and I get to school at 6:50 so there's one half-hour nap, and the second is at 11PM, which is my lunchtime.

Bacon_Barbarian
01-06-2012, 01:20 AM
What about lunch? Also, how the fuck do you fall asleep in the Cafeteria?

Celestial-Fox
01-06-2012, 02:17 AM
Do you eat at another time, then?

Sylux
01-06-2012, 06:31 AM
Sorry guys I was playing ME2 all night as House. Yeah, I sleep in the classroom since my teacher stays in there during lunch. I don't eat, no.

Celestial-Fox
01-06-2012, 06:46 AM
Oh, that's nice of your teacher. Do they know what you're doing?

jaidurn
01-06-2012, 12:20 PM
This is why I don't go to school. Sleeping at a desk is very uncomfortable.

Sylux
01-06-2012, 12:43 PM
Oh, that's nice of your teacher. Do they know what you're doing?

Yeah at least the ones who need to know lol and yeah sleeping at a desk sucks but I mean it's only for 30 minutes at a time twice a day five times a week

Celestial-Fox
01-06-2012, 04:39 PM
I guess. Isn't there a place on the floor you can take a pillow to?

Sylux
01-06-2012, 04:51 PM
Probably I'll think about it but lugging around a pillow is a bit overkill lol

Celestial-Fox
01-06-2012, 04:52 PM
Stuff it in your locker, silly.

Evil_Cake
01-06-2012, 04:54 PM

Sho
01-06-2012, 05:10 PM
Yeah beds are so overrated.
