Hello everyoneÖso admittedly Iím rather intimidated here, but I do want to improve with my art so I shall suck up my anxiety and ask for some constructive criticism. I really need a lot of pointers when it comes to anatomy as Iím fonder of drawing faces but clearly thatís not going to cut it (I really want to improve on my anatomy!)

So for my story I intentionally wanted to challenge myself by making my protagonist a male because Iím terrible with drawing men and I need to improve plus I gave him spikey hair because well I suck at spikey hair. Oh and I really appreciate tips and pointers on how to draw hands and folds on clothing.

Clearly Iím going for the manga look in the first three pictures yet I donít want it to look too manga generic I sort of want it to be recognizably my own style so I suppose that takes time and practice.

Also Iíd like some pointers on portraits, as you can see from my last pic I also enjoy drawing those. That in particular is a self-portrait drawn nearly a year ago. So all in all I guess I want you guys to tell me what works and what doesnít work and how to improve with the manga drawings and the more realistic portraits ^_^ Thanks for your time.

Hey, don't be intimidated! We're all really cool here, especially since Synnworld and Luneder left. I really like the colored one on the bottom, your realism strikes me as fantastic! I would say, though, to focus on facial anatomy for a while, especially profile views. Great work, keep it up!

Thanks so much for the advice...grr I know I really hate profile views and tend to draw things usually straight on (cause its so much easier).
And the self-portrait took me forever to do, I can't even say how long because I kept redrawing it erasing it (over the course of a couple months ^^; ) and even now looking at it I can tell there are some things off about it like the eyes don't quite match up. and the lips X__X lol and I spent so long trying to get those right

I will agree with Sylux. You're pretty good, however facial and body anatomy needs a little work. Keep practicing and posting on here and we will surely help. But don't be discouraged in trying body poses, cause here, we help no matter what you want to try (as long as we can)

Unfortunately my body anatomy is a little shakey however here goes my help.
For the first pic, your arms seems unnaturally placed. I think it would look better if his right arm was more propped onto his knee rather than behind it and the left one might look better if it was laying beside him, however I don't know where you have it extending to right now.

in the second pic (profile), the ear is too small. you have a streatched ear and a normal ear extends between the top of the eye and the top of the lip/bottom of the nose. Streatching the ear only extends it further down.

The third one (the girl) looks like she has an overexagerated neck length. it would look better if you shorten them.

The fourth one you have a major problem with the arm tucked into his pocket, however the salution is simple and reason is common. Your elbow is too far from the body. I dunno about females but males tend to have an arm that pulls back more than out.
http://us.123rf.com/400wm/400/400/logos/logos1003/logos100300326/6752314-thoughtful-mature-man-with-hands-in-pocket-looking-down--isolated-on-white-background.jpg As in that pic, the hole between the arm and the body looks a little like an eye. In your pic, it seems like he actually is making a peter pan pose, which in that case, his wrist would be bent.

As for the self portrait, I try not to touch those if I don't know what you look like as I can give really bad advice and be hurtfull.

I am sorry if this is long and hard to take, however that's all the help I can give. I am sure that many more artists will come and help you far better than I can. And some people even like to do redlines. (I can't on this comp so I won't try). So I wish you the best of luck

Looks pretty decent and definitely better than my first art post here, so please keep posting! I don't have time right now to go into specifics for each picture but I'll try to answer your more general questions and concerns.

The best thing you can do to get better at hands and clothing folds is to simply study the real thing. There are also a few tutorials here on MT that might be able to help you out as well if you really need some guidance. Posemaniacs (http://www.posemaniacs.com/) also has a nice hand tool that allows you to look at a 3D model of a hand from various angles which is nice for practice as well.

As for your style, I'd suggest not worrying about it. I think you'll find that as you practice and evolve as an artist you'll naturally move towards drawing what you like to see which becomes your "style". Too many people worry about looking unique at the beginning when they should be worrying about more basic things like - does this look correct.

Well first I'll say thanks so much for going through all of them ^^;
I do really need to work with the anatomy and I really appreciate you telling about the ear and neck lengths.

But with this feedback I think I'm going to be taking baby steps first. So I'm going to start with working on the face proportions like Sylux suggested and once I'm decent at that I'll try moving onto the body anatomy.

And I didn't even think of peter pan but now that you point it out wow...sorry about the wrist I really have no clue where to begin when it comes to hands

Actually good advice, I need to get basics down and thanks for the posemaniacs link...as awkward as a person I am I'm even worse at awkward posing ^^;

So I've developed a game plan:
1. work on facial anatomy
2. work on body anatomy and poses
3. the dreaded hands
4. clothing will come last
I need baby steps or atleast I think its less overwhelming if I do it in steps. I promise ot work on it and get better and don't worry I don't take constructive criticism badly I actually appreciate it :bunny_thumbsup:
So I'm to be working on some face sketches from last night and I'll be doing some more today and get something up soon.

Okay here we go again (its okay if I double post right?) so Iíve been sketching and trying to work better on my heads/faces. I feel this should be easier have you guys critique one problematic area at a time.

:cat_cryincorner:Iím struggling heavily on profile (well I guess these things don't fix themselves over night) views :bunny_sadness:, and I canít quite get the lower part of the face right in that view (chin, jaw, lips? Idk seems wrong) plus I want to work on my ears I wonder if anyone one has any tips for ears.

I drew two protagonist in my story by the way ^_^ also I did some quick coloring and I drew a chibi of my female lead idk if there are any sort of specific proportions that I should pay attention to when drawing a chibi character.

What kind of colored pencils do you use?

spidergoth
12-12-2011, 03:49 PM
Actually I don't use anything special since I'm a broke college student and amateur when it comes to drawing so their the cheapest ones I could find- crazyart colored pencils. I know people like to praise brands like prismacolor but I suppose if you don't know how to use the pencils then it wouldn't matter either way. It's just my technique I guess, this is just fast coloring so I use two colors for the skin, two for the eyes, and three for the hair if I wanted to make it look really nice I use 3 colors for skin, 3 for the eyes, and five or more for the hair.

For me I just start of with a soft light color as the tend to go down on the paper smoothly and apply a darker color on top smoothly for the hair after I put the lightest color down I just do fast strokes on top so it looks like strands of hair. I guess I just follow the rules for colored pencils: light to dark, not too much pressure and patience.

Though I've only good at colored pencils -_- I've practice water colors and only I can only do landscape but can't paint people very good. Also tried digital coloring and bad...

Do you have a critque about the proportions of the face though? or the chibis?

Sylux

Nice! They look really great. :3

The face just looks a bit round. The chibi is alright.

ok long reply time:

So let's go one at a time:

in the first page, I can see a lot of improvement however I can only find a couple of major problems. First, there should be shoulders in the pics as a neck isn't that long.
http://www.google.ca/imgres?q=rule+of+8+heads&um=1&hl=en&safe=off&sa=N&biw=1024&bih=506&tbm=isch&tbnid=_e-AVFveznHpFM:&imgrefurl=http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php%3Fs%3D5ac9cd89e946e82e61598bfb20629 f78%26t%3D219514%26page%3D16&docid=7gb6rXwX_p-XIM&imgurl=http://img560.imageshack.us/img560/3277/headscomradehero.jpg&w=501&h=599&ei=K3XnTrGrKYTd0QHchuDuCQ&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=670&vpy=145&dur=7883&hovh=246&hovw=205&tx=60&ty=111&sig=105906293192840959327&page=1&tbnh=156&tbnw=124&start=0&ndsp=11&ved=1t:429,r:9,s:0
As you can see, a person is 7 1/2 to 8 heads tall (I believe this is for a man and a woman is normally 7 heads tall) and two heads wide (flip the head sideways for that part). I know you want to start out small, but it's good to know when drawing busts, since you can measure how long the neck and shoulders will be.
The second thing I would like to mention is that you have a decent jaw on the profile view, however males tend to have straighter jaws than angled ones. But what I wanted to point out was that your 3/4 view of the guy is lacking that jaw angle. The jaw line is riding into his ear. That's no good and I am sure you will know how to fix it.

The second pic only has one real problem with it. That problem is in the jaw of the profile view of the girl.
http://www.dragoart.com/tuts/pics/9/5749/31919/how-to-draw-manga-girls-step-5.jpg
As you can see, the profile view's face is a basic ( shape as opposed to a straight line. Following that curve, you will pull the jaw back a bit. This will solve that problem.

As for picture three, I've already pinpointed those problems in the past comments.

Now for page 4. The only thing I will comment on this picture is your 3/4 view of the girl with her head tilted. When your head tilts that much, your hair follows, so it won't tilt back with the neck here, but fall straight down.
http://images.inmagine.com/img/aspireimages/pdgr107/pdgr107040.jpg

Ok, now that I'm done being harsh with your pages, allow me to share the few basic rules when it comes to chibis.
1. A chibi is only 2-3 heads tall
2. A chibi's arms cannot go over their head
3. A chbi's arm will be one cuve without any angles [no v arms, rather ( shape arms]
4. A chibi's clothing is simple, not too detailed. This is to keep your chibi cute and clean, rather than busy

All of these rules you applied to your chibis. So KOODOS!!!!

If you want to learn more about chibis, here is Rio's tutorial on the subject.
http://www.mangatutorials.com/index.php?do=/news/how-to-draw-chibi-characters/

Again, you have improved a lot on your art and it looks like you will be a pro in no time fast

So I decided to start venturing in the anatomy of the body even though Iím still a bitshaky on the face. And I shall try to keep in mind Max wellingtonís suggestions especially with the jaw, Iím trying to square out the jaw for my male character more and be more conscious about how the ear and jaw are lining up. I actually thought I should have extended the girlís jaw a bit in the profile view but I didnít want to pull it back too much so Iíll still be practicing profile views. And of course pay attention to the hair.

I love Rioís tutorials too Iíve read a whole bunch of them (well Iím making the most out of this Christmas break to improve on my artwork so Iíve been drawing a lot ^^; )

Anyway as for the anatomy thank you again Nisaren for the posemaniac link as I know Iíd be drawing some really awkward poses without it. I know I didnít do the hands yet but after Iím decent at the anatomy of the body I will work on the hands and feet for that matter. Anatomy is definitely a challenge for me so Iíll really appreciate any feedback ^_^

I kind of hate anatomy a lot. drawing her took forever because I had to keep making her smaller everyone kept saying she looked fat...:cat_teardrop: I wanted her to be curvy but not fat so I don't even know what to say the only thing i really like is I successfully colored her eyes hazel.

^ You should be drawing her how YOU want not how others want...if you want her to be curvy then damn well keep to that and do it, there are ways to make a girl look curvy without making her appearing chubby. If you want to shoot me a pm sometime and ill help you on the group board to draw some curvy girls :3

Cloudy-Chan is right. Just look at Bleach, Pokemon, and anything from Studio Ghibli (hope I spelled that right) All three character designs were made from 3 different yet as accomplished manga/anime artists that push for a look to be so. However, dispite that they are all under the same catagory of art, they all look different. Be proud that your art is one of a lead animator and not only as a beginner animator (the guy who spends his day redrawing everyone else's work)

Well I'm definetely trying to make her that way ^^; though I really don't want her to look chubby at the same time I don't want her to look ridiculous with a way too small of a waist.

But yeah I would really appreciate the help, though I can't really work on the group board, I don't know how to draw on my laptop (I have no tablet) I really liked the curvy women you drew and posted in your critque thread.

Well then I'm happy that my style is different I'm just upset over this picture because I couldn't get her body to look the way I pictured it. And well now I guess she doesn't look big because like I said I had to down size her in particular at the hips and thighs.

But like I said I don't really want a generic anime/manga style my fav. manga artists, stylistically speaking, are Tite Kubo (who you mentioned ^_^) and Tomoko Hayakawa and both have unique styles.

My opinion.. alot of it is about the pose. Curvy girls have thin waists and wide hips, so you want a pose that excentuates that. I'd show you what I mean but I'm away from my Dorms for christmas and left my tablet there.. Anyway getting some dynamic motion in the hips is key.
Quick Pointers
If the right shoulder is angled down, you want the right side of the hips angled up, to create some dynamism.
Curvy girls can look more appealing with their legs tappering inward, to reduce the gap in between the legs where their crotch is.

spidergoth
12-17-2011, 08:11 PM
Okay thanks so much Cloudy-chan I think she looks a lot better now

@scarletlight thanks for the pointer and I get what you mean though I wanted a cute I suppose ďinnocentĒ factor to be conveyed through the character and that sort of pose typically screams the opposite of that, funny I did that sort of pose for the third girl before I even read this

Anyway I drew two other girls; the second picture is the same girl Iíve been drawing for a while. Theyíre the 3 main girls in my story so Iím sort of working on character design and making them very distinguishable from one another in face and body and hopefully get across their personality with just a picture.
The first girl I want a voluptuous hour-glass figure of a girl a bit above average height and a more oval shaped face. .

The second girl a thin hour-glass figure, average height, and a heart shaped face.
http://www.mangatutorials.com/file/pic/photo/2011/12/spidergoth-jasmine2-jpg_500.jpg

The third is a petite girl with pair-shaped figure and a squared face. Though Iím concerned that she looks a bit boyish I know that squared faces a more of a manly feature but I like her face that way

That’s a relief, I definitely want to make sure I can make a girl even with a more squarish face.

Anyway I find practicing different body types is a good way to teach me anatomy, try different figures and make sure they all look feminine, plus I just like variety, since people come in many shapes. So I’m working on male anatomy which, to me anyway, is so much more difficult. I’m just not sure if it’s going by well.

Love all the pics on this thread! The colours in your second last pic go very well. For the last pic, I would say to maybe make the girl on the left's our left shoulder a bit longer? as if the arm was down not sticking out it would be very small. Other than that I think the pic is very cute :)

spidergoth
01-10-2012, 08:35 PM
Thanks shadowsfade that arm does look really screwy ^^; I think I rushed through that too much

Anyway I'm planning on submitting this in the weekly challenge thread though I don't know if I should give it a background or would that ruin it...I was going for green maybe a more olive green though idk. Any critiques on it would be nice too...I know it looks grainy I had a super brain fart when choosing the paper, why I would be choose such a rough sheet for colored pencils I still don't know. I liked the way it turned out though admittedly it barely even resembles the picture it came from due to my own artistic inabilities, like I just couldn't draw the right(your left) hand so i just cut it out the picture entirely and I couldn't replicate the colors the pictures...-_- so I just went with it and changed a lot of it to emphasize the mood.

Thanks guys, I do love working with colors...portraits though kind of frustrate me grr :cat_sigh: ..they take a long time and I can't really replicate a picture (not good enough yet) and being a perfectionist it bothers me (guess I can't afford to be one when it comes to art just yet).
See I was trying to draw this:
http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u164/spidergoth/111006-235053.jpg
Obviously the colors are different which I already mentioned...what bothers me is the face I can't draw the features correctly. Practice practice practice is all I can say right now, but thanks again for the feedback.

Interesting representation. Sort of anime-like. Great colors, very flattering, nice job.

Lightly inappropriate, unless good friends. Perhaps better wording? Something like "Enjoy drawings of more well-endowed females." Only of course if not good friends.

@Sylux yeah I suppose I spend too much time drawing manga characters and not a lot of realism and that's why it ended up like that.
@ckyume I'm not sure if I drew that many girls with, lets say large assets, I've been trying to work on a variety of body shapes...-_-; oh and its a plush cow lol I don't know if that's important or not.

Anyway I do realize I've been kind of boring when it comes to drawing the entire body...I practice it but I don't post all my sketches because most of them suck. But if you want a full body picture I just drew this up: http://fc06.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2012/011/6/3/mischievous_fairy_by_isabellapiano-d4m2rwv.jpg

I did it in reference to a pose from posemaniacs.com but still seems idk off in places and the hands are atrocious

I think you portrayed yourself very well! Maybe its because in the photo, our left side of your face is in quite a lot of shadow, whereas it isnt as dark in your drawing, which may be what makes it look a little different? Also, I like the fairy you've done :) I had a quick browse of posemaniacs to find (what I think is) your reference, and I think maybe its the top bit of the chest? in the reference, the chest is more angled (if you know what I mean), and I think that as you can see some of the back behind (her) left arm, as the chest isn't as angled that could be what makes it slightly off? other than that, the legs and general anatomy is very good :) hope you get what I mean and it wasn't too confusing :S

Very helpful, thanks Gedeon, I guess it was a "back-breaking pose" lol

I get what you're saying Shadowsfade no worries, I still got a lot to work on when it comes to drawing at different angles and poses in general.

Thanks Cloudy-chan but I'm a pretty calm person it takes a lot more than a silly comment to offend me.

grr new semester and part time job gives me little time to draw, but I still been sketching as much as I can. The first one is a quick sketch, I just actually finished it, and now that I look at it I don't know why I drew her foot that direction ^^; lol :cat_what:

anyway the second is me practicing inking by hand I messed up quite a bit due to my shakey hands and/or the ink running out and pissing me off. Any constructive criticism is appreciated as always.

wow I really like the last one :) her outfit is pretty creative too! (which is awesome! that's one of my weak points...) don't really see any mistakes outright, I'm only really confused about the way she's holding the stick thing. It looks heavy... and awkwardly held, but I dont think anything is wrong with the way she's holding it. It's just my preference I guess? haha also nice inking! For the top one I know its just a quick sketch, but her top leg looks like it's lifted rather than rested on the other. Either moving the top one down or the bottom one up would fix that easily :D Hope I helped...

Thanks for the feedback Corastaur ^_^ For the catgirl well I kind of figure the weapon would be light like a broom still it is pretty awkward way of holding it ^^; and thanks for the pointers on the first one...grrr I really need to work on my poses.

So anyway here are two more sketches I did today...seems like I only get free time on Tuesdays ^^; Felt like trying something different.

Suppose to be a mermaid I was kind of confused on how to position the tail and hand.

When you are drawing things in the background like the last picture, try and picture what it would look like in your mind, think about what perspective it would have. because she is sitting pretty much level to the eye that pool of water would have more perspective and be a different shape :3

At the moment it looks as if we are looking down on the water from above.

Shadowsfade

Apart from what Cloudy said about the background, I love both the pictures! The first picture is really good, and the hand in the bottom one is amazing!

That is one of my fave poses, actually. I've tried so many times to draw that pose, but I could never get the crossed legs right, but you, with a little work, could master that, it's so good. The eyes are also great, I can't see much wrong with your work on the Kedi character.

As for the Mermaid, very nice work, I could learn a lot by looking at it, I might be able to draw a good mermaid if I followed your example.

As for Jasmine, great body work, and the back ground is nice, and the water lilly was a very nice touch, if you work harder, I think you could become one of the better artists on MT.

Thanks for the feedback, working on the background Cloudy cause I have Jasmine as a profile shot and the pool looks like a different angle like looking down but it should look more like a side view...still really need to work on backgrounds. And Shadowsfade thanks I still hate hands though lol. And thanks for the compliment Liebe but I still have a long way to go, I'm still trying to get comfortable with anatomy and posing the body and different angles.

Anyway so here's some more stuff some sketching.

Some more of my Oc's:

Looks pretty good. I see a lot of potential in your drawings. TBH though (and I say this a lot) you're probably gonna be working on body anatomy for a while... everyone does, hands etc. are just gunna take time. My suggestion would be to work on your facial anatomy right now. You seem to have a good grasp on faces, but there are just a few, very common, problems that I see pretty consistently in your faces.

1.) I see you like to draw huge pupils, and there's nothing wrong with that, but make sure your eyes are three eyes apart proportionate.
http://www.mangatutorials.com/file/pic/photo/2012/03/NWAP-face-impotance.jpg
2.) Dont forget where the jaw/mouth opens at. Sometimes if you draw the huge eyes first, you tend to crowd out the space for the rest of the face and the mouth gets drawn way too low.
http://www.mangatutorials.com/file/pic/photo/2012/03/NWAP-face-importance-2-3.jpg

spidergoth
03-06-2012, 09:01 PM
Thanks NWAP I actually know that about the face just I've been concentrating so much on anatomy I've been scribbling my faces down too fast without paying much mind and big eyes have been a bad habit of mine but if I pay attention to it I usually avoid it. Though now that you mentiont he mouth I think it comes more from how low I tend to draw my noses rather than how big I do my eyes or maybe I'm wrong. All I know is I'll be more careful about my eyes and mouth placements. I think this pic. the mouth might be too low...I think my eyes are okay maybe I should pull them apart more?
As for now I really want to spend more time on my anatomy just because its my biggest weakness and I'll doodle faces all the time but I really have to sit down alone and make a lot of time for the whole body in general.

Anyway I did this picture yesterday, I just traced over my paper sketch. Wanted to draw big heads without getting too much of a chibi affect. Tried to make her as cute as I could get her. I wonder if anyone knows anything about drawing dogs I wanted to "manga-ify", I suppose, a dachshund epic fail but I tried.

This is a really cute outline! I love the detail in her clothes, and the cute doggie :3

Some things I've noticed would be the arms. If her right arm (our left) is going to hold the leash that way, you would not see the top of her hand. I tried to do it a couple times to see if it's possible, but the only way would be if it's broken. So if you plan on working with this image more, try to just show the front part of her fingers (like if she was punching at you, does that make sense?) Her left arm (our right) looks all right, but I'm not sure how comfortable it would be for her hold her shoulder up that high when she's go her purse. You might try lagging the shoulder down a bit to add some weight to her purse.

I think the dog is very cute! And this could work in manga style just fine :3 You might want to fix the perspective on the rump a bit. The back part doesn't look like he's sitting, so just realign his foot a bit and that should help fix it. You may also want to add a bit of dimension to the leash by having it twist a bit (like if you've seen a ribbon hanging down, how part of it would be thin, and the other part the full width of the ribbon.)

Love the stockings and her boots! She's rockin' it! :3 Very cute design. I'd love to see where you go with this!

ah such traditional style! the only thing i would recommend is the same as above with eye sizes! and maybe in the full body one, she looks a tad flat on the bottom half of her? not sure if its leg position

i love this style of anime and it suits you well! Ill definetly be checking back!

So Iíve been lacking on artist improvement unfortunately due to me not sketching as much as I should. But here are some things Iíve done recently and I've been working on toning down my all too big eyes lol.
Shippy fanart, so I apologize in advanced for any bleach fans for the lovey doveyness lol

thinking of enter the saimoe competition since the swimsuit season will be coming upÖthe first one definitely needs to be reworked as I rushed through it

@Mr. Liebe
I love Kuboís work his art is really amazing though Iím a really good mimic of it. Thanks about the neko, sheís one of my favs to draw though Iím not a bit cat girl fan though donít put yourself down weíre all on different levels here and Iíve got a long ways to go developing my skills as well.

@ JJorgie
Thanks though Iíve got a long way to go I really struggle with it

@Shadowsfade I completely redid that picture lol though I ended up making her arm too long, I really need a lot of practice with profile views.

@Cloudy Thanks like I said I redrew her because the first picture was rushed and Iím happy I did cause she looks much better, I put her hair in two and gave her a coconut drink lol but I wonít post it here it will be out on the saimoe competition soon anyway.

Anyway Iíve made myself very busy so far this summer unfortunately, though Iíve found more than enough time to do some drawings, a lot of hand and facial studies in particular I really need to get back on whole body anatomy studies though as that is something I continue to struggle with. I actually ended up doing 26 portraits ^^; but I wonít post those because well itís just a lot and I can point out most problems with those pretty much by myself.

Some character designs Iíve been working on I wanted some critiques before I decide to complete the girls digitally, the third girlís right leg is too long so I know Iíve got to fix that already. Iím not really good with instruments (drawing Öwell playing them too ^^; ) so I did have to practice those a few times to get them to look decent, I hate drawing fenders but I really thought that guitar suited that particular character and drawing a left handed one just makes it more complicated. I still need to draw in the straps for the instruments so no I donít think that the bass and keyboard can just float in air like that.
http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u164/spidergoth/027.jpg
This one I wanted to do something a little different since I do tend to draw a very simple manga style more often than not. Iím still not quite sure if Iím set and stone with the design of the character so Iíll probably change some things here and there any suggestions on that and anatomy as well as what to do for a background I would like since I actually want to finish this piece.
