This is a devlog for a game I'm working on. It's a boxing game with minimalistic controls and gameplay. I figured that I might one day want to make a fighting game and before I did that I could go back to the roots of fighters like Karate Champ, Yie Ar Kung-Fu, Urban Champion and make something along those lines. John is assisting me by providing all the music.

CONTROLS:
Player 1 -
WASD - To move. Hold back or down back to block.
J - Weak Punch
K - Strong Punch

Player 2 -
Arrow Keys - To move. Hold back or down back to block.
Numpad 1 - Weak Punch
Numpad 2 - Strong Punch

1 on the keyboard to pause

Holding up or down while pressing punch will get you a different punch. Blocking is as simple as possible. Block low to block low attacks and block high to block high attacks. Block wrong and you get punched.

CAN I PLAY?:
May I remind you that what you are playing is woefully incomplete. Also please report any bugs or odd things to me. I play the game so many times that the small stuff escapes me, so I need your fresh young eyes to help me out.

As for suggestions, I will hear them and appreciate them but obviously I won't always be receptive to them.

STORY:
Thousands of years in the future all the planes of existence have crashed into one another. Demigods now live on this mangled plane with humans and demon alike. There is one advantage, though; everyone forgot about violence. The world celebrated relative peace until two brothers got so angry one day that they invented punching, seeing as they had no other outlet for their anger. Steve, the older brother, went around punching everybody which reintroduced punching to the masses. Johnny chose the opposite path, and realized that Steve's rampage would thrust the world into an era of violence, so he taught people how to punch in order to defend themselves.

Years later when punching is wide-spread, a mysterious man named Stu sends messages to all the most powerful punchers to get together and test their strength.

CHARACTERS:

Johnny Sidestory: The original Punch Monk, Johnny ascended to demigod status after resigning himself to protect the world from evil punching. Unfortunately demigods are naturally apathetic so he doesn't even really care anymore. He only joined the tournament because he heard Steve would be there, and we all thought Steve was dead.

Steve Sidestory: After Steve's rampage he died of anger. He was so angry he just died. Though after Stu's tournament was announced, word spread that Steve would be there. A zombie? A demigod? Who gives a shit.

Hound: A man with the strange ability to turn into a half-bat-half-wolf demon. He joined the tournament so that he could meet the famous Johnny Sidestory, whom he believed could help him control his beast half.

Aife (Pronounced ee-fuh): The only person in the cast who actually worked hard to become strong. Not a demigod, no special powers, just lots of effort. She joined the tournament just to see how strong she is. Yes normal people exist in the future, too.

The story basically takes place so far in the future that humanity has kind of started over and only a few people remember the ancient art of punching. If kicking happens it'll have to be in a sequel or something.

Using game maker and Idk when it will be finished. Most of the programming is done its more graphics at this point.

Newest additions:
-AI
-Dude named Hound. Hound was supposed to be like a bat demon but he looks like a wolf also I named him hound so I guess he's a purple werewolf now.
-If a character has a theme it will play. If not it will play some song john wrote.
-If you lose an arcade match you can go back to title, character select, or rematch
-I think thats it

Plz report any bugs also I need to know if the ai was too hard or too easy. The first and second fights should be easy. Third and fourth are medium, and the last is hard.

Also the portraits are placeholders which explains hound's hilarious anteater portrait.

If you're talking about how you use a Mac, there's GM for Mac, and I'm not sure if he could, but I'm guessing if he wanted to, he could import his GMK to GMfM and export it as a Mac executable.

You need to use a program to unzip the rar. Download winrar.

Does that work with 8.1 because I believe the mac version is like 7 and I can't even wrap my head around why they chose to do its so stupidly.

Haya get a Western Digital like 400 GB HDD with a large cache and just install Windows on it just to test out James's games and whatnot. Macs do support other OSs, right? I know Windows HDDs do not support Mac, but Macs support Windows? Or do you have to get an Apple Harddrive?

Just played this. Music and the graphics are greatstuffness.

Gameplay feels... odd. Maybe it's just because you can't jump?... Either way I managed to beat it pretty easily in one sitting, only loosing once. Seeing as it's not very long, making it harder probally wouldn't kill it. The up/down punching system, on the other hand, I really liked.

It's a good 'un. :o

ty I want to make a super cheap endboss which will increase the length slightly as well as a short scene between each fight ala street fighter or guilty gear to help the pacing a bit.

Edit: Regarding the gameplay feeling odd, it probably is the lack of jumping. This game is about poking and counter hit damage, and not so much about zoning.

Dude the special attacks in this game are awesome I did one just now and it summoned a huge dialog box that said "special". It was interactive, too, it gave me the option to click "Okay".

I played the demo of that back in my days of hunting down Japanese indie dev sites. I also played B.B.B. and some of those other games. But yah I didn't realize that was your inspiration. I never particularly got into that game cuz the sprites were too big. I like a bit more mobility, personally.

No samsho is awesome because it's about huge counterhit damage and punishing mistakes. To me, jumping doesn't add anything to it. A game like that should be more about timing and proper defense. They're still good games obviously.

Extra note: All the super are broken as shit. Still deciding if I like it or not. Getting jabbed when a guy has super is pretty bullshit right now but I love games like that so.

Super Explanations--
Johnny's "Super Lucky Tornado Roulette": Johnny spins around and starts to turn gold for some reason. When he stops spinning he'll punch high or low? Which one is it? It's completely random. That's right. Because fuck you that's why.

Steve's "Red Handed Hatred Galaxy": Steve's arm stretches out. Incredibly boring super. All function, no flair.

Aife's "Speed of Hearts": Aife moves SUPER FAST and punches the shit out of you.

Hound's "Screeeeeeeeeeech": Long invincibility and a free dizzy. He can combo into this which basically lets him do a DOUBLE COMBO.

As long as Im testing escape will exit the game. Even if its counter intuitive I close and open the game many times per minute to test stuff. The game is being designed for the winnitron so when I make a proper pc version I'll add a real menu.

New build coming soonish?
-Added keymapping, including support for gamepads/joysticks. Play King of Punching with NES controllers now.
-Touched up the backgrounds to make them more detailed and clash less with the character
-The game has a completely new resolution, and thus its much more 'zoomed in' getting rid of all the unnecessary space
-Made some minor changes to animations
-Removed the invincibility from uppercuts, not because it was too good just because it seemed unintuitive to punch a guy in the dick and him not react.

Any features anybody wants that aren't outrageous?

What's Left?
-Music
-Playtesting/bug fixing

Changelog:

General-
-CUSTOMIZABLE CONTROLS. Please run the config.exe if you want to change the controls.
-Switched the confirm and cancel buttons. Confusing at first but it fits the nes control scheme now
-Added a boss complete with stage
-Added more detail to stages
-Ported the game to a new resolution (looks way better now)
-Added a miniscule amount of story stuff
-Switched some songs around and added new ones
-Redid AI entirely. It is considerably harder now
-Reduced the timer from 60 seconds to 40 to make turtling viable
-Fixed the glitch where you could walk through a person in the left corner

Punches-
-Brought damage up on straight but made it punishable on block
-Jab is slower and does less damage but can still lead into combos
-Upper R is shoots out way further but is still super unsafe
-Upper L is relatively unchanged
-Low R goes out further but it now (sorta) punishable
-Low L was nerfed altogether as you could combo it into itself over and over

Characters-
-Johnny's super is much much faster and now has a 'tell' for if he goes low or high. Sort of fixed all the collision errors but sometimes it's still unpunishable when it shouldn't be.
-Hound's super no longer does damage. Seems too weak now but I still feel it's good
-Aife's super no longer has start up invincibility so she can be punished for throwing it out randomly
-Fixed a bug where Steve's super would go through people at close range, and made the animation less boring

I might just suck at this, but you weren't kidding about it being harder. o_o

It's quite nice anyhow. Love the stage design and the music. The whole aesthetic makes me think it would have been the bees knees on gameboy or something. Going to keep at it for a while anyway and see if I can actually get to that boss...

Thanks for playing!

Some tips for the final boss:

-If you see the super flash BLOCK HIGH but when the super is over BLOCK LOW because he will almost always throw out a low attack. If he throws a hi, its fine because he doesn't have super anymore and you're probably too far.
-He can combo into super from any hit because I wanted him to be super cheap. The best tactic in this game is to jab counter-hit, but one bad trade with Stu and you lose half your life. Therefore you should wait for him to miss with any strong attack.
-Every Straight Button move (that would be K in the default controls) is super unsafe. He will punish you if he blocks one.
-The computer in general often whiffs uppercuts because the range is off. Punish with this combo -- Weak Uppercut > Weak Low > Strong Low. If you're a bad enough dude you can walk forward and jab after the weak uppercut and still do the rest of the combo but it's extremely tight.

I'm stuck on Stu right now cause the AI is about as cheap as SFIV and Stu=Seth right now, lmao. But I gotta say the game is pretty awesome, man. Gud job. Wish I had this shit back like a decade or so ago on my GBA, but the fact that it didn't bore the hell out of me as soon as I got past the main menu says this game does its job pretty good.

Oh and gotta love the music (and sfx?), kudos to John.

Maybe you could post it here too and get some more recognition out of it? Can't hurt to spread the word bruh.

Released a patch today.



Yeah so somebody pointed out to me today that the lifebars drain in the opposite direction you'd expect for a traditional fighting game so I decided to just patch a whole bunch of things while I fixed it. So here's the log:

-Lifebars now mirror traditional fighting games
-Fixed the jab issue that let you cheese the CPU (mainly Stu) by jabbing constantly, and thus making the game harder
-Retouched and redid a large amount of the audio
-Removed a frame from the jab animation, which allows for some crazy wombo combos
-Johnny's super no longer randomly hit high or low. You now hold low for the low version. You can tell which version he is using by following the direction his skin turns gold from (top to bottom or bottom to top)
-Fixed numerous glitches regarding invincibility on supers. You should now be able to punish whiffed supers properly
-Animations were buffed
-And a few minor things here and there
