View Full Version : Phoenix's Art| New drawing: Umbrella Sky

Hi guys,
This is my art thread. Here I will be posting future manga art. If you want to, you can go watch me on dA.

There you will also find portrait drawings.

Now back to the topic.

First picture I will post is:

Sexy Christmas Girl

I have made a little drawing of a cute/sexy christmas girl ^^

Hope you like it.

Comment and critiques are very much welcome.

Btw, my scanner is broken, so I had to use my phone to take a picture, so sorry for the quality...:cat_sad:

While you're definitely on the right track, it looks like the torso and pelvis aren't part of the same pose (does that make sense?). Actually, it doesn't make sense. I don't know if a contortionist or someone more flexible than me could do it, but my back would have to be broken to do that pose (yes, I tried it). That aside, she doesn't appear to be wearing a bra. How are her breasts being held up like that? Apply gravity.

That you know what you're doing is especially apparent in the line quality and pretty much everything besides the boobs and the pose, so I'm a bit hesitant to mention the shorts.

. . . I'll do it anyway. I've neglected my fashion studies, so I might be wrong here, but the way the shorts wrap around her butt makes them look a bit too short to be shorts. Like they wouldn't quite cover her crotch. Again, I don't know what's going on in the front there, so take this paragraph with a grain of salt.

12-04-2011, 09:59 PM
I must agree with matt on the boobs, unless that is a sports bra (dunno much about them though)
I must also agree with him on the pose. By my streatch, her left elbow could only reach her left butt cheek, not further. Also, it looks unnatural for a girl to pose like that.

I must also mention that normally sexy pics are looking at the fourth wall (ie-the camera, the drawer, the audience.....) and mostly in anime, wink to add sexiness....

But good work anyways

12-05-2011, 07:45 AM
I also agree with most of what's been said. Though I will say, viewing sexy underwears on various sites: they do make them that ride up your...er...bum like that. I would/could never wear them myself :P But they've got em.

I think you should also have looking at the viewer. It'll make her attention be the person looking at the image, which is more of a turn on.

Other than what was mentioned by the others, this is a pretty cool pic. I like how clean your lines are, and the value is appropriate for the drawing. Also, and this is gonna sound weird, but that arm pit rocks. I like how you did it. Sorry, I DO NOT have an armpit fetish.

Now that I've made this awkward, I'm gonna leave. Cheers!

12-05-2011, 02:32 PM
I don't know if he posted this to be critiqued.

12-05-2011, 03:02 PM
Before I say anything else, good job. Good to see you enjoying what you do.

*Puts on top hat, monocle, and pipe*

You did say you wanted critiques, old chap. I do believe what you are attempting is known to the general comic and arts community as the famous brokeback pose (http://www.whenmonkeysattack.com/blog/2009/11/12/welcome-to-the-brokeback-pose/) - in short, a gratuitous depiction of a charming well-endowed lady showing off her... *cough* ... commendable... assets.

Do note, my good man, that the spines of human figures make no more than a half-turn at best, and while your picture has no glaring errors, it does display a torso turn of roughly one hundred and fifty degrees anti-clockwise. In short, you may find future drawings of sideknockers more desirable in the context of this pose. Pip pip, cheerio!

If I've made any sexist commments, I apologize in kind by posting this gratuitous brokeback pose of the male avengers for my fellow members of the fairer sex...
I make no apologies for poking fun at the British. Or for showing you that picture.

12-05-2011, 05:37 PM
Thanks for the comment and critiques. (And yes ClockHand, I posted this to be critiqued.) They are very helpful. And yes, I know that her pose is a bit off, but it's hard to make that kind of pose right.. And.. it has been a while since my last drawing of a girl so.. very long when I think about it.
Also, I find it damn hard to draw thw woman figure. Very hard.

WOMEN! Y U NO EASY TO DRAW!! (http://weknowmemes.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/y-u-no-template.jpg)

12-06-2011, 12:10 AM

Nisaren shared this site with me and I want to share it with you since it has so many body poses all in muscles, so that should help you with drawing girls!

12-06-2011, 01:39 AM
Thank you so much, that site look VERY helpful. I am gonna use it for sure. ^^

New drawing.

Lineart - Chibi style me

This is just the lineart for now.
This is going to be my deviantID picture when it's done.

The original drawing is drawn in hand. The lineart is done in Manga Studio Debut 4.
Since I don't own a drawing tablet,:cat_sad: this is done with the mouse, and the curved line tool.
It took a little time, but it worked out really well. ^^

Please tell me what you think. :cat_listen:

12-07-2011, 10:58 PM
Oh, I see. Sorry, as you state that it was a "gift" I found it a little mean to be criticizing it.

And I can't help you with the chibi and I'm to lazy to make any good critique for the first draw, so see ya.

12-08-2011, 03:29 AM
Perportion wize, visual aspect wize and concept wize, this new pic is awesome! however, it took me a little while, but your mouth is actually where the nose is supposed to be. from my book, it says that chibi noses are only drawn using the \ part of the < nose. Although your style doesn't have a nose, you need to respect the nose placement...

This redline is underimposed on your work to show you how much down I would bring the mouth.. it's done in ms paint, so pardon the crappiness.

like I said, nose is optional, but how I draw noseless people is by actually drawing the nose lightly at first, then errasing it later. hope this helps.

12-08-2011, 03:57 AM
Jared Leto on your dA looks especially good

12-08-2011, 04:32 AM
Thanks for the comments.

Maxx, I am currently coloring this. And thanks for noticing, haven't noticed it myself, but now I see it.. Fixed it, you'll be able to see it when I upload the colored one. :)

Thanks Sylux, I really spent time on that one^^

12-08-2011, 04:49 PM
Finished with coloring in my lineart.
Before you criticize my coloring, I want you to know, it's done with mouse, and I have absolutly no experience in coloring on computer. I have only done it 1 time before!

But I would be glad, if you would give tips on how to improve. ^^

Note: I edited the mouth so it look more natural.

12-08-2011, 06:04 PM
Daw! Its really cute already! Nice lines btw. As for making it more cute.......Bigger eyes(?) rounder head......smaller mouth.....

12-08-2011, 11:06 PM
I think of the shaddowing of the ear is a little strange. I think it's cause how an ear is formed.

As you can see, the top and back are illuminated due to it's elevated state, rather than the middle, which is a gaping hole... So I would fix that colouring.

Also (THIS IS JUST A SUGGESTION) I would add a little bit of colour in your chinese characters on the ink bottle. I suggest this cause you have about 3/4 of your image in colour, so that leaves the bottle looking slightly out of place. Adding the colour in the letters will bring it together.. Using my studdies in colour theory, it really doesn't matter what coulour you use however Red will slightly hurt the eyes (as red vs black hurts the eyes a bit), however feel free to use a dark red, or dark pink, or any other colour. To add contrast to your black, however, I would suggest a light colour, like the colour of your hair, maybe in an orange or something...

12-09-2011, 05:10 AM
Not bad, though I don't dabble in the anime style but you can definitely draw. I like the latter. The inking looks on cue

12-10-2011, 01:09 PM

This time it's not Manga, but my favourite pony from "My Little Pony - Friendship is Magic"
Yes I am a "brony", and I am proud of it too!

12-21-2011, 04:08 PM
Now that I am done drawing the mane 6 from My Little Pony - Friendship is Magic, and will now go back to drawing manga.

Here is the main character for the manga I am about to start on.
And don't wont to get into details about him and/or the story here in the critique section, but I will make a thread in the story section.

Tell me what you think of him. ^^

I don't really know about the sword yet. May change it, may even remove it from the character completely. Dunno yet.. :/

12-21-2011, 04:33 PM
Yes! No more ponies. :3

12-21-2011, 04:56 PM

But back to manga!! :D

01-03-2013, 04:19 PM
Hello again everyone!
It's been a while since I last posted anything on this forum. But now is the time to do so again.

I have been experimenting with a new drawing style that I really like, and hope you will too.
This is a human version of Twilight Sparkle from My Little Pony - Friendship is Magic.

This drawing is originally made in hand, scanned onto my computer and touched up in Manga Studio Debut 4 using my mouse and the line/curve tool.

Let me know what you think :)

I can see that I haven't been posting all my pony drawing on here.. But there are so many so if you check out my dA page at atoklanzeros.deviantart.com you will find more and better pony drawing than the ones in this thread. ;)

01-03-2013, 07:56 PM
Wow nice! Love the folds and love your line art. You use different line weights perfectly, emphasizing the shadows. The pose looks natural, the proportions are good, and all components fit well together.

2 minor details though. First is your patellas, they seem to bulge out too much. It's very good that you take into account their shapes since they do influence the shape of the knee, but usually in a subtle way. Because of the way the ligaments are attached, when the knee is bent, the ligaments above the patella stretch and smooth out the top while the ligaments at the bottom remain kinda loose. So you see a smooth curve at the top of the patella and a dimple right under.

2nd really minor detail is that the perspective of the shoe on the left seems a bit off. Not completely, and it's always super hard to get the perspective right when the object in question is not aligned with the objects in the background, but it looks like it's floating a bit in the front.

Anywho, overall, great drawing, and she does look like Twilight Sparkle! Hahaha. I love it <3
Hope my explanations make sense!

01-04-2013, 09:04 AM
Ok so i think that the hand (the one we can see) is a bit wrong. the distance of the knuckles to the ankle is much longer then the fingers themselves( and i dont think you can bend your fingers that much)
And the length of the thighs. Or at least the over-thigh.
Other then that and what Yukie mentioned i see nothing wrong. Good job. :D

01-04-2013, 12:10 PM
Thanks for the comments guys.
After I read what you guys said, I took a look at the drawing, and could immediately see that you were right.
So I made the changes that you suggested, and now I am even more satisfied with the drawing than I were before.
The hand.... oh dear god.. I have been trying to get it right since I got home from school today.. it took me about 1 hour to get something that looks decent.. But I just have so much trouble with hands, and especially with this exact angle.. so damn hard..

Check the fixed version out here:

Let me know what you think about it now. :)

01-04-2013, 02:00 PM
THe hand looks god now....although the thigh is same as before.

01-04-2013, 02:56 PM
Yea I didn't edit the thigh.. I don't know.. If I roughly measure it, it seems to be okay in proportion.. I might be wrong, but it's too much for me to go back and edit.. (Because I am lazy. :P)
It will be something I take into account on my next drawings, but I think I'm gonna leave it at this. :)

- - - Updated - - -

Okay.. forget that comment.. I took another look at the drawing after posting that comment, and realized that I was wrong..
So I change the length.. actually it didn't take that long.. lol.
It hasn't been change a whole lot, but if I changed it more than it is now, it just looks ridiculous..

well, let me know what you think now :)

01-07-2013, 01:11 PM
Much better. i went as far as measuring the length of the thigh to her body. Good work. Will you color it?

01-07-2013, 02:23 PM
Yes, I will colour it!! But I am afraid that it must wait a little while, because I don't want to colour it on pc using my mouse since I don't own a drawing tablet.
It was easier for me to do the linework, because I used the line/curve tool to do it. So mouse wasn't a problem. But when it comes to colouring it - I will wait until I buy myself a real drawing tablet, to get it right. (Which shouldn't be long.. Though I am going to a concert in 2,5 weeks, which isn't that cheap because of transportation back and forth..)

But stay tuned!

01-21-2013, 04:20 AM
Couldn't fall asleep last night. So around 2am I got up and drew this little sketch.

You don't need to critique this drawing.. Just wanted to share it with you guys and girls :)
But please leave a comment if you like it :D

01-21-2013, 09:24 AM
Really cute design! I love the hair and the lips!!! The far eye's a bit shorter than the closer one (remember, in 3/4 view, the eyes are still the same height, just not the same width) :)

01-21-2013, 12:36 PM
Yea I know some things are off.. The head is too big, the far eye's a bit shorter, her collarbone sits too low..
But it was 2am so I didn't really pay much attention to anything.. lol :P

01-24-2013, 03:17 PM
New Drawing. Tell me what you think. Think personally that this new style im trying is turning out well. :)
Named it "This Side Up".

01-24-2013, 04:00 PM
This is very cute, I love the face... however... the face is also what bugs me. What I did was replicate the pose in a mirror, the way she is supporting her head/face is going to have an effect on it. Most notably I found that my eye closest to my hand was distorted due to the tissues composing the cheek being pushed up. This also had a stretching effect which brought the mouth up slightly. I understand that this is stylised, but I would still take it into consideration. Try the pose in the mirror and you should see what I mean.

I also think that the hand could be enlarged slightly, and you could shove in some shading as well if you really wanted to make it jump.

01-25-2013, 10:50 AM
Really liking that as a new style choice... Sort of less 'in your face kawaii' and more 'attractive neutral'. If you ever did a webcomic in this style or whatnot, I'd certainly have a look-in.

I can't help but notice that her right eye is quite a bit higher than her left, through...

Still very nice and clean, through, anyhow.

01-26-2013, 06:26 PM
this is very cute. I like the pose and the style, although common in the anime/manga world, is nicely done. I won't comment on the face so as to not repeat demonfyre's critique. I will say the folds in the clothing strike me as unnatural, particularly around her breast area. The ones around her butt and abdominal areas are also odd, just because it makes her look paper thin if she were to stand up straight from that position.

Good job overall :). Let's see some shading!

02-11-2013, 11:19 AM

Finally got my drawing tablet. The new version of Wacom Bamboo Fun Pen & Touch!
Wanted to share the first drawing I made with it. It's Meg from Disney's short film Paperman. (If you haven't seen it.. DO IT!!)

You don't have to critique this, I just wanted to share this with you guys/girls. :)

And for anyone interested, I made a step-by-step, how it was made thingy of it. :)

02-11-2013, 04:08 PM
Daww... the little feels i got when i saw that. I saw the paper-man as a short when i went to watch wreck it ralph, but ill admit that this short made a bigger impression on me.

02-11-2013, 04:49 PM
Thought I would make George too!

02-12-2013, 12:41 AM
The paperman was definitely my favorite Disney short and one of my favorite stories. You really portrayed the characters and emotions really well! They looks wonderful! There's only one thing that catches my eye. On Meg, her far hand is the same size as the closer one. Since, the arm's foreshortened, the hand needs to be smaller as well. Congrats on the tablet and keep up the great work!

02-14-2013, 07:20 AM
Holy shit you're getting fucking good

02-15-2013, 03:29 PM
Hi again guys.

Just wanted to show off my newest deviant ID.
It's a Disney styled drawing of me wearing a Mickey Mouse hat.. :P

02-17-2013, 02:35 PM
Just wanted to share a work in progress of Ariel!
I'm in a Disney mood lately :P

02-17-2013, 02:51 PM
Her arm is looking dislocated, and her waist is pretty thin (even though I know Ariel in the movie has a really thin waist, but i'm going to point it out anyway for you). I really like this Disney fan art you have been drawing recently, I especially love the flow in Ariel's hair :3

02-17-2013, 03:47 PM
^Seconded. Also, her head is extremely long, Disney style or not. Other that that it looks great :)

02-17-2013, 04:47 PM
Thanks for your input. It's funny... sometimes you don't see the obvious yourself!
But thats the good thing about this being drawn on the pc - its easy to go in and edit! :D

- - - Updated - - -

Took your advice, and changed the things you pointed out. + the mouth.. wasn't happy with it before. Is now though :)

02-17-2013, 08:11 PM
Hi there :D. This is beautiful. Would look wondaful all cleaned up I'm sure. I did a redline of my thoughts:

02-17-2013, 08:15 PM
Her face seems a bit long imo.

02-18-2013, 03:26 AM
Many thanks Chii! Really great input! Some of the things you pointed out, have I already thought about, but the rest I can use! Thanks. :)

Again, this was just a sketch ;)

02-27-2013, 04:01 PM
Decided to try and draw a portrait using my new tablet.
This is what I ended up with:

Used this as reference: http://dahlig.deviantart.com/art/Umbrella-Sky-67965371

02-28-2013, 02:13 AM
Very pretty! One eye is a little shorter (height wise) than the other and the shoulder on the left is shorter (length wise) than the other.

Wow o_O This is fantastic! I love it! I really like the cross hatching you use! I always sucked with hatching...you utilize it quite well!

03-06-2013, 04:01 AM
Actually it's the one of the first times I used cross hatching.. Thanks! ^^

04-23-2013, 12:27 PM
Hey! Did you post on my Livestream ages ago? (didn't check till now x.x) If so ill gladly answer your question if it was this Phoenix :)

04-24-2013, 05:35 AM
Yea that was me.. Can't remeber what I wrote.. lol :P
