In 1991, the heavens themselves did part and deliver unto the world, by way of the Nintendo Entertainment System (or "NES"), the greatest combat frog game of all time: Battletoads. With it's beautiful graphics, euphonic soundtrack, and masterful difficulty its impact on the conflict amphibian genre continues to be felt to this very day. This game would see numerous ports to other consoles; to the Amiga in 1992, in 1993 in to the Sega Genesis/Megadrive, Sega Game Gear, to the Game Boy (retitled "Battletoads in Ragnarok's World) and in 1994 to the Amiga CD32. Additional ports were planned for the Atari ST and IBM PC but never completed. A completed but unreleased port for the Sega Master System is also rumored to exist. Clearly Rare was dedicated to working both themselves and through other companies towards ensuring that all people, regardless of their choice in video game consoles, could experience conflict amphibians in their finest form.

In 1993 the conflict amphibian genre was further perfected by the release of Battletoads & Double Dragon on the NES. This masterpiece of combat froggery would later be ported to the Sega Genesis/Megadrive and the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. That same year would see the release of Battletoads in Battlemaniacs on the aforementioned "SNES." 1994 would see the, thus far, final release in the series, the aptly named arcade game "Battletoads Arcade." All of these games are true masterpieces of the conflict amphibian genre; a glorious and brilliant synergy of gameplay, music, sound, story, and atmosphere that all come together to provide a combat frog experience unlike any other. Truly the saga of the Battletoads is one that is as timeless as it is perfect.

But the story does not end there, my friends!

On May 10th the latest entry into the Battletoads canon is to be released for the Nintendo Wii. So far footage of this upcoming opus is scant and precious, but here is the official trailer. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tnPv9l-5LNQ) All that is known for certain is this: it will be radical.

This game has made me hit things with clenched fists more than any other. I hope that they one day grace the Smash brothers roster with their presence.
