Guys, I have Internet now. Five megabits down, .75 up. Super-low latency--like, 11 to Google's servers across the entire country. Also, no caps.

I can now play games with everyone.

GunZet
12-07-2012, 08:24 PM
Damn that's like 4 times better than what I got.

Matt
12-07-2012, 10:30 PM
Seriously? It's long-range WiFi. The latency is awesome, but the speed isn't really and it's gonna take me like 5 hours to get Planetside 2 at this rate.

Still infinitely better than Sprint's 3g, but I thought all you guys got at least 20 megabits.

Dark Souls 2 Debut Trailer (http://kotaku.com/5966786/here-is-dark-souls-iis-debut-trailer) Holy. Shit.

jubeh
12-07-2012, 10:46 PM
Man so

Dragon implies prequel? Maybe the series will follow the ancestors of the fertile pygmy.

I hope they don't take the ridiculous criticisms that dark souls didn't have a story seriously. The story was told in an amazing way and I'll be really disappointed if they decide to just use a bunch of cut-scenes.

Hayashida

holy bananas that looks rad as dookie is there a release date or something omg
edit: nvm of course there wouldn't be, but still holy dookie bananas

ClockHand
12-08-2012, 12:48 AM
FUCKING AMAZING.

It's my or the aesthetic looks quite different, like there is a face close up (something that was never in dark souls as you identified people through what they were wearing), and also the guy walking around looks kinda from a cold place or kinda savage. Also not even that dragon look like a dragon.

And how does this will mix with the story of the first one (remember the ending, you dark lords)?

jubeh
12-08-2012, 12:54 AM
I would like you from the first game to be the villain but that might be asking too much also there is no established appearance for the character aside from maybe the box art.

ClockHand
12-08-2012, 01:05 AM
I think it would make a lot of sense if you were the villain, or at least the old dark souls becomes the new myth on the story (like the myth of Gwyn and the flames). But its still complex as on dark souls you have 2 options, you lit the flame or you don't. And this changes everything on the story and even more it change on how we perceive the story as these 2 actions were soo unclear that you end making way metaphors and hypothesis of what really happened, just remember the first discussions we had about it, and how unclear it was and how we had to interpreter everything to gave it shape, and then we end in this big story with conspiracy and shit... crazy shit.

I guess you are going to see the sequels of what happened with that, and you are not even going to know if the flame was lit or not, the whole game would make you play in this interpretations game as it did on the first one, at least this is my guess.

Anyway, I thought I would never say this but, my anus is ready for dark souls.

The new Last of Us (http://kotaku.com/5966783/the-last-of-us-arrives-in-may) trailer makes me want to get a ps3...
Also the new Phantom Pain/MGS 5/ MGS:GZ (http://kotaku.com/5966779/whatever-it-is-the-phantom-pain-looks-very-intense) trailer is.... bizarre, but the graphics look pretty awesome for real time rendering.

Hayashida

I heard the guy who directed the Monster Hunter games (either some of them or all of them, idk) is going to have something to do with DaS2. Like maybe he's directing it or something? I also heard they're planning on making the game more accessible to people, whatever that means.

Sconethief

We don't know what he wants to be more straightforward thought. He could want thinks like covenants or more story elements to be straight forward or maybe have more hints on what to do in the game. Also the PC version of dark souls did well enough for them to add PC as a release platform for Dark Souls 2.

Since I got IRL shit to do, I don't get a chance to game much & my collection's kinda out of date. But, I did just cop me a used copy of DEAD ISLAND on Monday because people have told me that it's awesome. Problem is, I just can't get into it. Are the other 2 in the series better? I feel like it's trying to be a FPS zombie version of the Baldur's Gate series on the PS1 & PS2.

I mean, killing zombies is always fun. But I just don't like that damn game. Ima take it back & exchange it for Disgaea 4 & if that sucks Ima give my PS3 to my lil nephew...

The weapon animations are more about game balance then realism but you should get it anyway

Matt
12-21-2012, 09:25 PM
If you're just spectating, the swings look really slow. But if you're swinging and being swung at, it feels fast enough.

Kodos
12-22-2012, 11:03 AM
The fact the whole game isn't just knights on horseback slaughtering hordes of poorly armed and trained peasants should be all the info you need to know about how realistic it is.

The polearms in chivalry are kind of brain dead. At point blank it seems they still deal as much damage as at proper range, when the only thing that could possibly hit you is the stick part.

Matt
12-23-2012, 02:04 PM
Chivalry with the hitboxes of War of the Roses would be flawless. As it is, the above happens. And so does this weird glitch where you can swing straight through someone like you had noclip on for a second.

jubeh
12-23-2012, 02:09 PM
Yeah realistically if I dodge into a polearm dude as he's coming down it should just stop the attack like it does in mount and blade

Evil_Cake
12-23-2012, 02:34 PM

Kodos

My biggest issue with Chivalry is the lack of a Black Knight mode. I want to be able to keep fighting no mater how many limbs I lose.

Matt
12-24-2012, 03:10 AM
Apparently I was in the beta for whatever reason. I only found one server, and it was a TO game on a new map called Citadel--essentially a siege map where the Masons hold a fort against Agatha. It'd be awesome with more than two players, but unfortunately, that's all I could play with.

jubeh
12-24-2012, 05:05 PM
Went like 12-4 or something good on a tdm server. Small servers are way better. Less chance of getting killed by an archer, but they're still a threat. More 1v1s, less getting stabbed in the butt.

jaidurn
12-24-2012, 08:55 PM
archers are the worst.

Matt
12-25-2012, 01:05 AM
As soon as I get the veteran helmet, I'm never playing archer again.

jubeh
12-25-2012, 02:11 AM
I like man with some arms but vanguards is so much easier to use I'm wondering if its even worth sticking with him.

Matt
12-25-2012, 02:24 AM
Man with a head is a good class. He at least has the super high-tech anti-archer device known as the shield. The vanguard only has a smoke pot. It obscures archers' vision... until they have the mind to take three steps to the side to see around it.

ClockHand
12-25-2012, 02:30 AM
Wait, vanguards smoke pot? Cool and realistic game.

jaidurn
12-25-2012, 02:32 AM

Matt
12-25-2012, 02:21 PM
vanguard is the class all the new guys play because it takes like no skill.
Only up to a point. New vanguards eventually get to the point where they realize random horizontal slashing kills teammates more often than enemies. Then they discover the mouse wheel, they play worse for about two matches, adjust their mouse sensitivity to better follow circle-strafing MaA's, and suddenly, they realize it's easier to win if they make full use of all the skills available to them.

/is a vanguard

Matt
12-26-2012, 11:00 AM
Use shields against archers and good timing against vanguards. For one thing, when they're using their charge attack, you can usually run in close and to the side and they'll be left recovering while you hack away at them from behind.

The game itself? Freaking awesome.

ClockHand
12-27-2012, 01:03 AM
It has a weird Tarantino tone, a little like it want to be satiric or ironic, but it constantly step back those concepts to get the player back on the game. Its weird, even the dialogues are some times a joke (with the characters), but then you are back to "game mode" but doesn't let it become a whole joke.

I just discovered that your height and weight (in Dragon's Dogma) affect your stamina recovery rate, carry capacity and stability (resistance to knockbacks and climbing enemies). I thought your height and weight was just aesthetics, and this discovered, plus the growth of your character depending on the leveling with your vocations makes this fucking awesome.

I don't get why so many people hated this game =/

12-30-2012, 01:46 PM
no checkpoint system means a random encounter can cost you hours of gameplay

ClockHand
12-30-2012, 01:48 PM
True. Also getting bad explained quest can cost you hours of gameplay and the quest.

I'm not saying the game is perfect or anything, but I don't understand the hate it receive. Also I look the game as some kind of survival game (each time I go outside of the city).

jubeh
12-30-2012, 01:56 PM
Thats fine but the cost of death shouldn't be my time since that's not something I can ever earn back. I like the idea of a light source but I think the lanterns should have stayed lit until you got them wet or something because running out of oil brought the game to a halt.

Also fast travel being rare is only interesting if the environments are fun to traverse. I would get extremely bored going from one place to another since all that's gonna happen is you're going to be attacked by goblins or bandits. You won't encounter wandering bards, or anything positive. Its just fights along a path.

ClockHand
12-30-2012, 02:05 PM
You could encounter pawns on the road. And ya, the world was bland, you mostly encountered monsters and there was almost nothing to explore (even so, I did explored a little and I encountered some pretty cool stuffs). But at least for me, each time I went out of the city, it felt like an adventure, I never knew what to expect, I knew there was going to be a monster and all that, but what I never knew how things would resolve, I end killing a ogre at climbing his back, and the ogre jump to slam me against the floor, but the ogre was going to fell from a cliff, so I had to get on his face and jump from his back to save my ass. Yes, the monster was predictable and there was always another monster on the road, but it felt like an adventure you would never know how it was going to end, but you were always worried to get oil and to be back at the city before it got dark.

Again, I felt like some kind of survival, so before going out of the city you were really concerned of getting your potions, oils, water and other things, and this is something that I never felt with other fantasy games.

The cod game is enjoyable, not worth buying on its own but it's a nice throw in with the console.
Gravity Rush is pretty awesome so far, great soundtrack and game play. I'll probably end up getting Uncharted, Little Big Planet, Playstation Allstars, and Persona 4 Golden at some point.

Deck verdicts: Dragon and Unicorn were the most fun. I also want to try the Crane scout deck it looked really fun.

Also found this rule:

EXCEPTION: As with the Rule of Presence, a Battle action can target, be performed by, or be taken by a card in a unit at another location if its costs or effects say they are able to move that unit to the current battlefield. The player who is taking the action must take choices within the action, if possible, such that they do move that unit there.

Which explains how you can use Brave New World (http://l5rsearch.com/db/search.cgi?title=brave%20new).

I found out that during that last game I should have started having my dishonorables commit seppuku, as it would have stopped the dishonoring effects. Though I don't know how I would have won with military that way.

Also this rule:

The Rule of Presence: Battle actions can only be taken by a player who controls a unit at the current battlefield.

Means you have to have at least one unit at the battlefield to use strategies so that you cannot leave everyone at home and just start playing cards as defense. If I had known that I would have stood a chance against that deck.

Here is a list of player abilities which are really important. (http://rules.l5r.com/EE_The_Player#Player_abilities)

Important abilities I noticed. If in battle you attach a spell to a shugenja you may instantly use the effects of the spells. Tacticians can gain a force bonus by discarding cards so that my tactical lion deck actually makes sense, and if you pay full price for a clan member you get honor equal to its personal honor.

I bought GTA 4. A few things:

1. Love the physics.
2. GFWL on top of RGSC and Steam? Screw you, Rockstar.
3. The online kinda sucks in my opinion. Maybe it's better modded?
4. It kept my save from when I pirated it. Yay!
5. The online hacking prevention appears either to suck or outright not work. A guy locked me in his car and told me to pay him real money to get out. And here's the kicker: he attempted to blackmail me in chat where everyone could see it, and no one did anything about it. I joined another server. Three minutes later, the hacker followed, and the host at least had the decency to try and kick him. It didn't go through somehow.
6. Nico Bellic is the biggest hypocrite on the face of the planet.

And Dota 2:

1. There are two types of people at level 0: Dota 1 veterans, and Dota 2 noobs, like me, but who haven't watched any tutorials. This guarantees you have as little fun as possible.
2. I almost never get to play a full game before someone disconnects, usually on my team.
3. Luna's voice is the only reason I play her (that and her + Butterfly = win).
4. Turns out the previously-mentioned cheater was around 12. Which explains a lot.
5. I tried a melee character. I lost.

jubeh
01-13-2013, 02:23 PM
Leavers happen at all levels of play but especially as you start since most people will drop out of their first game after realizing they had no idea what they signed up for. AC3's multiplayer makes me sad. It's so fun when it works, but it has so many technical problems--e.g. lag will destroy the experience when a player starts rubberbanding and you were trying to figure out if they were a player or an NPC; when playing in a group with my brother, 2/3 times I'd get a message saying there weren't enough players to start a game, while my brother confirmed that he actually got into the game. On top of that, playing with friends is wonky in general and rarely works. Also, paying real money for customization options--a free-to-play mechanic--after you already payed $50 for the game, plus another $25-50 if you went deluxe? And CD keys for the game itself and any DLC pack, plus double DRM with Steam and Uplay? Real classy, Ubisoft. At least I don't have to be online to play single-player.

On a side-note, I actually kinda like Uplay's general design. Getting rewards for doing stuff in-game is nice, and that makes achievements actually mean something. It's nothing compared to Steam, though, and I wish I could just run my Ubisoft games without Uplay.

EDIT: 1000th post.

Beat dat dmc. Need to unlock dante must die, though ie the real game.

Going to post my thoughts and then I'll post more thoughts after I beat dante must die. Need to get through son of sparda first.

The combo system is as tight as its ever been. You have access to six melee weapons at once and 3 guns. Customization isn't permanent. You can respec whenever you want, but I think I'll be able to own all the skills pretty soon.

This thing I love to do: I use aquila and buy in, everyone gets sucked next to me -- I arbiter, knock everyone into the air -- Then rebellion step jump cancel into helm breaker over and over because its fucking hilarious to watch. If there's only one dude instead of buying in with aquila I'll stinger > trillion stabs xx into kablooey or ebony/ivory and then launch with rebellion. I always feel like I have a lot of options, though admittedly I miss being able to 'rev' my sword.

Dante essentially functions as his old self and nero since he can move to and pull enemies. He's missing some of the more outrageous moves from 3, but I didn't find myself really wishing I had them in the first place.

Out of combat stuff is... actually fun. Do you remember punching gyro statues and rolling dice as nero? All that stupid shit is gone. You're mostly platforming, though there is one puzzle at the end but it doesn't overstay its welcome. The platforming is modern sort of getting to point b from a as opposed to actual challenging platforming, but the environments are so gorgeous and it felt badass to do so I didn't even care.

What I don't like is the enemies that can only be hit with specific angelic or demonic weapons. Before you've unlocked all your moves and weapons all these dudes serve is to fuck up your combos. Even after you have all the moves there are only so many things you can do try and bring up your style rank with just the two weapons you're able to use. Did I mention you can't even shoot these guys? It's nuts, though not impossible in a lot of scenarios. If you're fighting a bunch of enemies, just make sure you're using the opposite weapon and rebellion on them, and save all the weapon specific attacks for the blue/red guys.

The story is good. Gave my heart a good rush at one point. The voice acting and mocap is insanely well done, but that's to be expected from ninja theory. Dante actually has an arc in this game and is a much more dynamic character. If what you liked about the old dante was his unashamed japanesey-ness its gone now sorry. :( I really enjoyed the ending, and I'm looking forward to the inevitable sequel.

So i recently tried Dead Space for the first time.

It's pretty good. sure, it's not as scary as people claim (could have used some dark corridors here and there, and i can't lower the gamma for some reason.), fights with more than 3 enemies tend to get a bit tense (at least on hard mode), and the occasional jumpscare.
I like the selection of weapons you're given, especially the Ripper, even though the Plasma Cutter is one of the most used weapon in the game.

I like the scarcity of the amunition (eventhough you can buy some extra at the shop, though that shit's pretty pricey), kinda reminds me of the first Resident Evil.

The enemies look a little too "human" in my opinion. sure they're reanimated and mutated corpses, but still, they've could have been made a little more unnatural to increase the scare factor a little.

Overall, a good game.

I'm kinda worried about the Third entry in the series though.
Seen as it is more focused on action rather than survival, opposed to it's predecessors.

GunZet
01-19-2013, 12:47 PM
Try Dead Space 2 if you haven't. I personally prefer the first Dead Space overall, but DS2 did great with the more fucked up looking enemies, and it's a lot more tense, while the only tense moments in the first DS was when you have to go against the brute that takes out Hammond, and the regenerator.

Also I never really felt any of the DS games were about survival rather than action. Cause there were no points you were really like... struggling. As long as you had a few med-kits and a beefed up plasma cutter, you were good to go. The only survival part in any of the DS games was in the very beginning of DS2 where you're quite literally running for your life. That was awesome.

I'm a bit skeptical about DS3 myself, but I feel it's going to be a lot like DS2 with some DS1 mixed in, and that's not a bad thing really. The public demo comes out on the 22nd, so I'll see how that is.

ClockHand
01-19-2013, 12:54 PM
Its the horror survivability. You see the horror genre is defined by the character's goal to survive (different horror genres might change this rule), and it end when the character empower himself/herself against the adversity. When you make sequel about it, you are using a character who already survived the events of the first game, so he is empowered, and this makes the sequel more action oriented than horror oriented.

Think it like this: in the first resident evil the characters had a really low expectation from zombies to appear (specially the ones you use), and so you weren't prepared for them (you have weapons, but it become more like "hey, you are in a old mansion with zombies, deal with it"), but ones more sequels come, more the characters were expecting for zombies, become more action oriented than horror oriented.

GunZet
01-19-2013, 01:09 PM
I also think you can even make a horror/survival game action-oriented just from design choices alone.

When you have a lack of threats, and an abundance of stuff that is meant to keep threats away (weapons and other shit), you're just going with the motions because it's so common, and there' not much to use it on. And if there were too many threats, it would also go down the path of action-oriented, because the horror/survival elements wouldn't be used sparingly. It's like if you got a dead body dropping from a vent every other hallway.

I'd say Dead Island could have been a pretty good horror game if the atmosphere wasn't so ... everyday normal. Like if I just walked outside on a sunny day and found zombies. But that's unique to it, and no biggie.
Anyway.

It's really just about a good balance and atmosphere, or just a general lack of player-friendly items. Like Amnesia; the lack of your most helpful element (light) in the game can save your life, lol.

ClockHand
01-19-2013, 03:10 PM
Well, splatter films were a mix between action and horror (in a wide sense of action). I guess you can do a horror game with action, but it wouldn't probably become survivable.

Dead Space

When me and a freind sat down to burn through this as quickly as possible, I shamefully admit that we mostly just ended up screwing around with the silly sawblade weapons, trying to glitch-explode the enemies with closing doors, and me disturbing him by commenting on how hilariously cute the little rolly-polly fleshy starfish things were.

So yeah. They have been saying that the new game is going to be "multiplayer focused", and I can see it working in a grizzly-fun way, but not for 'horror' reasons. Really, the minute multiplayer is even hinted at, the horror aspect (never mind 'survival' aspect) goes right out the window IMO.

just finished playing through all five episodes of "the walking dead". personally, i'm not a huge fan of "interactive movie" games, but i really loved to see that my choices actually mattered and the way the characters reacted to every decision was awesome. and when the story is actually this good you get involved in the game. seriously, it's really rare for games to make you actually feel so emotional...

Right so that's not an interactive movie game. That would be like fmv games. Like pretty much everything on the sega cd. There's this neat one you should try called plumbers dont wear ties.

What you were playing was a point and click adventure game. It may seem like I'm being pedantic here but there is a massive gap in the potential quality of games in each genre and calling anything resembling monkey island an "interactive movie" is actually pretty silly to me.

Oh also another interactive movie -- The Uncharted series. Needless slam.

The walking dead does not resemble monkey island at all. Like monkey island gives you rubber chicken pulleys and you realize you should use that to do something. The walking dead (in parts where there's actually no quicktime event) gives a hat and tells you that you should give it back to this girl, thats the only extent it goes to in terms of being an adventure game. when i say "interactive movie" i mean stuff like heavy rain and fahrenheit.

The walking dead is the natural evolution of point and click adventure games for adhd audiences. There are still plenty of interesting decisions to make, and its still an adventure game.

For real this game is amazing. It's a wuxia sandbox game where you can beg on the street for money and punch people off of bridges.

I need Deadspace 3... O_O

The new coop mode they've put in looks surprisingly playable, the idea of subtle story changes was also rather enticing

GunZet

Yea I was sketchy on the coop at first myself, but they've really done good on it. Like really done good on it, and everything else to boot. The new enemies actually surprise me in the different ways they morph.

Also got the Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance demo on Xboxen. I don't really know what to think about it yet. Cutting shit is awesome though.

Co-op in horror games are always great because you get two modes to play: scary as shit (single player) or lots of humorous fun (multiplayer).

Agreed.
Allthough one thing bugs me.
In Dead Space 1 & 2 you used tools to fight necromorphs. In Dead Space 3 you use actual guns.
Not to mention the fact that you have universal ammunition. In my personal opinion; that's very lame.
One of the things that made Dead Space scary was that you had to conserve your ammo and had to make every shot count.
I'm not saying it's not awesome that you can craft your own weaponry.
i'm just saying that it would probably make more sense to stay in the whole idea of "improvising" your weapons.

GunZet
01-23-2013, 07:06 AM
I actually found the changeup very welcome, because think of why you had those weapons. Where were you in Dead Space 1-2? Where are you in Dead Space 3, and who's mostly there?

-That- is the reason we don't see many of the weapons used in the first two games. But with weapon crafting, you could easily make those again yourself, so they're still there, just not by default anymore.

I've never played Dead Space, but it sounds to me like the Silent Hill thing, where the control-orientation jump from Silent Hill 4 to Silent Hill: Homecoming was a jump from survival-horror to action-horror. Silent Hill 4 the most you could do is hope your character doesn't suck that bad at aiming. SH: Homecoming you get a third person shooter with dodges and rolling and grappling and a combat knife and cool poses and shit. Hell, your character even thought he was a war vet.

Also Nintendo made a crap ton of announcements today including an HD Windwaker remake, new Zelda, new Yoshi game, new SSB...
Dammit now I have to save up for a Wii U.

I'm really hoping that they update the music along with the graphics, not as in change the music but re-record it with an actual orchestra.

They were trying to fix a bunch of problems but now they're apparently adapting it into an entirely different engine.

ClockHand

Why? I mean, the game hasn't sold anything and it looks like they have wasted a bunch of money to just fix the problems, and now to waste more to try to adapt it to a new engine? I mean, as I see it they are just losing money but for a reason they are still trying to make it work.

Master Quest is a goddamned Rom Hack. Like, seriously. It's unfairly difficult, obtuse and counter-intuitive, and just not fun at all.

On the flip-side, it does turn Jabu-Jabu's belly into nightmare fuel.
