View Full Version : Cartoon Network going to shit

Lemme start off by saying this is not another "the new cartoons suck" thread. This is common knowledge by now and the only reason I watch CN is for the new Thundercats and Adventure Time. The thing is, even with the predominantly crappy programming, I could forgive CN if they weren't so fucking haphazard with what ads they play.

The other day, I saw an ad for the Big Bang Theory with one dude shouting "bitches", then cut to a clip of girls talking about sex. This was during afterschool hours (when kids would be watching), between strings of programs rated Y7 (ages seven and up appropriate). That's just fucking reckless. Luckily they only made that mistake once. But all day today I've been seeing ads on CN (throughout afterschool hours) for a show called "Master Debaters" where porn is mentioned. If it was just once, it would be forgivable as a broadcasting error (a horrible one). But they've literally played this ad half a dozen times now. Now, I understand not catering to your older viewers by bringing back Toonami and such, but at least fucking care about the kids who still watch your shitty programming.

Not only that but CN has been giving airspace to other networks more and more frequently since the new management. It used to be almost entirely self contained, aside from the occasional Disney ad. It's turning into a generic Fox network.

I rememer being little and seeing ads on the cn channel for sextalk lines on at like 6pm. This isint totally new for them to do but I agree it shouldn't be there that early. I assume the commercials are paid for with a promise that they will be shown a certain number of times daily and this is how they fill that quota. I wonder if cn even has a s&p department and if they are in charge of this area of the network.

code lyoko was boss! I don't think I ever really liked totally spies anyway, but being little I just kind of zoned out watching it.
Idunno Cartoon Network has been shit for a while now, and only has some good stuff (reruns of ed edd and eddy, adventure time, regular show ((which is probably my favorite))). I haven't watched Thundercats though since all I watch now is comedy central.

Nickelodeon is worse, imo. How I remember, there was teen nick and then the normal nick with rugrats, (good) spongebob, fairly odd parents, and stuff. But now the whole channel is like, various unfunny Dan Schneider sit coms + new, unfunny spongebob and some FOP sometimes, which is the only entertaining thing.

I wish I was a kid during the 90s so I could watch MTV D: It looked so cool. Curse being a 14 year old!

The point is not that cartoon network is shit. It's shit to us because we were around to see what it was. But now kids are watching it for what it is and in the middle of their kid-friendly programming there are Indian dudes shouting "bitches" at the top of their lungs. Cartoon Network is not just shit--it's reckless shit.

How about ESPN? Unless sports have suddenly become adult only programing, the ads they show during 1PM GAMES THAT FAMILIES WATCH TOGETHER can be shocking, to say the least.

But I agree with CN too. In fact, almost all channels have decided to pretend children only watch Nick Jr and Disney Channel.

GunZet

CypressDahlia

Well, ESPN doesn't have ratings so I can't really say. But yeah, I can imagine it has some p. racy commercials. The thing about Cartoon Network is that it's full of shows with TV Y7 ratings, which basically tells parents "hey, our programs are perfect for your young children!" and then blindsides them with vulgar commercials. It's a really dick move.

Espn panders to straight adult males where as cn is a kids show network. We all know that plenty of +18yr olds still watch cn and nickelodeon but they are both still kids networks. You would be like "WTF is this shit" if you saw a spongebob DVD commercial on spike right? I agree if you don't want to see those things just don't look but this is intentionally showing kids this stuff. Kids are allot more "mature" (for lack of a better word) and vulgar but not all. My 2yr old told me about people dying the other day and Dracula eating peoples faces but that's because my mother let him watch brahm strokers Dracula. So kids pick up what they watch and that includes the commercials.

I don't think it really matters. I mean, if the kid watches Teletubbies or Barney I don't think they can be any more messed up then they would be by watching those. If they hear swear words it's not like they are going to repeat or even remember them because it's just another random word they don't know that they heard on TV. I watched bad TV shows when I was younger (I.E. Family Guy, South Park, violent movies) and I turned out fine; a lot better than my parents/family anyways, and they didn't even have those shows when they were kids. I think we are just over-thinking and getting paranoid over nothing.

Sylux
09-08-2011, 11:25 PM
Messed up by Teletubbies? It's made for kids for a fucking reason, they're not messed up shows that corrupt children and teach them horrible outlooks and bad concepts in a pleasant fashion. It's all innocent, dude, it's not more fucked up than the shows about porn on CN.

Byakuran
09-09-2011, 09:54 AM
Hmmm... i watched shows like south park when i was like 13? xD And i wouldn't get it much... but south park got really more disgusting over time, maybe its because i understand the jokes now...heh

And you just turned out fine Oz? We arent the same as you, so there may be childeren like age 6 who watch it will copy it :l i mean why is it that they dont show kids boobs and vjj's? because its not even interesting i mean which kid is aroused at that when 6, i mean will they even get it kids dont lust at that ages so why even bother... And as fore those on the boundary kid/teens o like i said i think they are too young to understand the consequences, not saying every kid will go bad but its just its better to be safe than sorry..

But thats just my opinion, i wonder if there are some test about kids watching behavior and how that influences their daily life ohwell, maybe ill change my mind later when im a mom

I HAVE NO KIDS yet.

The reason we don't let children see things of a sexual nature is because (well for one that's just gross) they are to young to even really understand it. This is made worse by the fact that half the time kids find out about sexual stuff from horrible sources like pedophiles or friends the Internet possibly even a religious group. If you saw some violent sexual acts as a child and no one told you that what happened was wrong wouldn't you grow up thinking that was just how it was done? If you had a friend tell you that the girl can't get preggers until she is 18 wouldn't you believe them? If a priest told you having any sort of sexual desire was a one way ticket to hell wouldn't that make you feel like a dirty little pervert for ever? Kids don't have to understand what is going on to repeat or reenact it.

Yes. And this is even more of a reason why parents need to be the first ones to explain what sex is to children, and at an arguably younger age than currently (note: arguably). If they learn it as a natural concept, they're less prone to treat is as immaturely as most adults do today.

Psy
09-09-2011, 04:45 PM
Yes and as you said it's the parents responsibility but it's also their right not cn's or anyone else'. At around 11-13 is when I think it's best to explain most things to children. Kids of all ages are watching cn and carelessly putting these kinds of ads is taking away the rights of parents to teach their kids these adult things when they feel they are ready to comprehend them.

This thread makes me think of that video games cause violence thread we had in the game section. It's partly your fault if you don't tell your kids that the violence and gore (now the language and the behavior they see on tv) is not acceptable in the real world or that it's make believe and pretend. Kids are literal and anything you say is truth to them 99% of the time but that allso means that tv videogames books friends the mailman and crazy uncle jeffy are all telling the truth too.

CypressDahlia
09-09-2011, 04:55 PM
I think it's slightly different because games have ratings on the box and what you get is what's written there. The games are self-contained and Mario will never accidentally leak into Gears of War. You don't have to worry about material in the game that wasn't already listed on the back of the box. If there's sex, the ESRB has it listed. If there's gore, they have it listed. But what Cartoon Network did was lead you into thinking their network was child-appropriate with child-safe ratings on their shows and then hit you with inappropriate commercials. I don't think parents should be blamed for that. Hell, even I was surprised and none of this stuff is new to me.

You're all idiots.

Kids should be told about sex at a young age, especially girls. How else are we supposed to milk the prepubescent teat and tell this impressionable - and thus lucrative - age group that they're entirely defined by the products they buy? Sex is too powerful a marketing tool to let it be wasted on adults alone; money is all that matters! Innocence has a price, and that price is less than the profits a typical 11-year-old girl brings in buying our sponsors' "little whore" range of clothing.

The above are the opinions of a Cartoon Network executive and may not represent the opinions of Delphinus or the Cartoon Network as a whole. The Cartoon Network name and logo are registered trademarks of Fox Broadcasting.

My mom told me a few bits and pieces of what sex is when I was pretty young. About 10 maybe older to be exact. She never went into the vulgar detail, but she made sure I knew wtf was going on. I actually think it's better to let kids know about sex while they're still coming up, but just not all at once, or some fked up shite will happen.
