Let me tell you a tale of childhood dreams, strange visions, and a VHS rental store...

Okay, so back during the Pokemon craze in America, of which I was a proud member, I used to go to the Video Store and rent episodes. One day I somehow came home with a different anime. I'm not sure if it was a movie or just a long first episode, but judging from the art style and quality it was old, older than Pokemon probably. I watched it once, can't even remember if I liked it, and returned it, never to see it again.

Well I just remembered all of this today for some odd reason, and now I'm dying to find it. I can remember just a few details, unfortunately.

1. Protagonist is a little girl (oh THAT narrows it down!) I want to say she was wearing a red dress. Kinda Chibi-ish but not quite.
2. She lived with a old woman, probably her grandmother.
3. An early scene involves a boy on his bike in front of the house. The grandmother is yelling at him I believe.
4. The scene that sticks out in my head the most: The little girl is standing on the side of the road, possibly a bus stop, at night. Standing next to her is this big fluffy creature who kinda looks like Snorlax (he's on the cover and it's probably why I thought it was Pokemon). He may have been holding one of those hobo sticks with the hankerchief tied on the end. And I think he talked.

Any suggestions would be appreciated! This is driving me nuts!

Holy crap! :cat_sweat: I think this is it! The bus stop image looks super similar to the one in my head. Now I just need to find the movie to see if the scene with the kid on the bike is in it.

That explains why I could find it in an American VHS store. Now I have to actually watch it!

I'm not sure if I'm relieved or disappointed.

This wasn't even a mystery. If it was a mystery we would've needed a van with a couple of girls, three guys and a dog.

On topic, thanks for the help.

Does anyone else get chills whenever they look at the image at the bus stop? Good chills, but chills nonetheless.

No.

I the first time I saw totoro I was a kid, but it was pretty exiting, so every time I see totoro I get happy.

Also totoro makes people happy because he is cool, and the whole story is not about conflict but more about experience and exploration. Also he is has a great smile.

I just found out the true story of this mystery:

I picked it out when I was very little, but unknowingly it was the Japanese version, and even with the subtitles I was too young to read well enough so we returned it. I never got to watch the whole thing.

NOW I MUST FIND IT AND WATCH IT!

If you like Totoro you should also check out Howl's Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke, and Spirited Away. All are amazing movies.

I saw scenes to Spirited Away. It looked amazing.

I think my friend has it. As well as Akira, which they also want to show me.

Speaking of Ghibli films, why hasn't Disney brought over Only Yesterday? I thought it was a pretty interesting movie. <_<

I recently watched all those except Totoro and I must say I love those movies.

@Fenn, They have all of those including Totoro on Netflix (DVDs).
