Drums are hard because they tend to bleed over to the other mics. There are some dampening pads you can get to place around the mics so they only capture a specific drum. Its a dream for mixing because sometimes you get a drum track that is just EVERY drum and its hard to work with. For the kick you get as close as possible, really. For the snare you sort of get as close as you can aiming sharply down at the skin of the drum but out of the way so you dont accidentally hit it. Awesome way to lose a mic and happens way more than you would think.

The other drums operate similarly but I think some dudes like to put the tom mic farther off, and obviously the cymbal mics need to be a decent distance away.

Actually, if you can put the mic right into the bass drum through that little hole, you can get a good recording from it.
