"I suppose we need all the help we can get, so long as you don't offend anyone and perform useful actions - like healing - there is no reason why we can't say no"

"I don't see how anyone could find me offensive, my dear. Healing isn't my speciality - I'm more of the dramatic type - but I have some musty old healing spell that I learnt back at the university which should be enough for anything not actually involving limbs dropping off."

Now Oedipus was on a roll. The butch warrior-woman was at least pretty easy to get along with, if not at all his type. Still, the mental scores on the bedpost needed to be heeded.

Veldan turned around.

Where the hell was her food? What sort of monster ran this place?

Remembering something, Veldan did another 180.

"Oh yeah, there is alot of backstory to this whole group and alot of it probably shouldn't be told to everyone, so we'll explain more as our mutual trust grows"

Oedipus took the time to purchase 10 gallons of ale from the (slightly bemused) barman, which he stuffed, along with 50 loaves of bread from the (slightly scared) baker, into a large bag of holding that could possibly have been better described as a sack of loot. Also some flasks.

[Cost of 3gp, 2sp, 4cp; weight of 117lb, all stuffed into a Bag of Holding II]

When Oedipus showed up later, the large sack was bulging. Do you dare ask why?

And so the remainder of the party headed off towards Kusanagi.

Only to be greeted at the gates by the torchlit image of the Duke's carriage. One of his aides was motioning for them to get in.

I'm assuming no one pulls a Saiza and you all behave. I'm also assuming Ulow is sitting on Makodo's lap or something, since there might not be room otherwise now that you have Elfy McDingus with you.

The Duke was seated across from them.

"Ah, hello again Ms. Arezzo, Ms. Hotaru. Mr... Ironrod I believe. Yes. Oedipus Ironrod." He gave a nod towards the Chitine woman. "And you must be Ulow. It is unfortunate I did not get to welcome you, but here I am now. I came to see you all off, as I did your friends earlier."

"That's right. I saw them earlier. Mr. Aulaz and Mr. Blythe left quite early this morning. I was rather surprised you were not with them. Regardless, I have been in contact with Lady Shiranui. She is most relieved to hear that you and Makoto are alright, Ms. Arezzo, and she eagerly awaits a meeting with both of you. I imagine she would not object to you bringing Ulow or Mr. Ironrod along for the trip. She always was very friendly and happy to meet new people."

Well, it had to be something. The Duke was a busy man, busier than most. Why would he spend all his time waiting for just a farewell wave.

Flattered and a little scared. I know we are somewhat important to him, but to take time out of his busy schedule for us? That doesn't make one bit of sense. There has to be more this. Even if he looks honest, he is still an assassin. A nice assassin....

She sighed internally and tried to discern if the duke was lying.

Veldan was pretty sure he was telling the truth.

He laughed slightly.

"Please, Ms. Arezzo, it is nothing at all. As I have said, Lady Shiranui is a dear friend and I would be remiss if I did not wish you all well in your service to her. And I do wish you well."

"Furthermore I am also concerned for Lady Shiranui's happiness. If you fail in your task for her, she will be unhappy. Attempting to do whatever it is she wants without Mr. Aulaz or Blythe will be more difficult, so I figured it would be prudent to inform you that they were headed there as well."

Considering the incredibly dense ammount of people that even knew her name, Ulow was a little taken aback. She wasn't even sure if she had told Opedius it... Outwardly this resulted in a sort of half-glazed over, half-suspicious gaze that was directed on the duke for several minutes. The fact she was also the only one who did not get a title was not lost on her, either...

Still, since she was leaving anyway, it seemed pointless to dwell. Subconsiously, Ironrod's "supplies" did cheer her up a little bit aswell.

She hoped Kusanagi was nice and dark...

Oedipus reached into his large, throbbing sack of loot, and retrieved 4 flasks containing some unknown substance. They looked like they held about a pint of liquid each. Do you have any idea how much maths I had to do to fill those flasks?

He screwed the top off, took a sip from his own flask, and proferred the remaining three to Veldan, Makoto, and Ulow, but not the Duke; giving beer to the Duke would be wasting it.

"Happy hour!"

Veldan pushed the beer away.

That stuff was revolting.

"Hopefully we can rope them back into helping us. Rin will undoubtedly try her best to help convince them of that as well, but if they refuse then we will soldier on ourselves." Veldan replied to the duke happily.
