I have never know if this forum no one critic because: they don't have the mind power to make a critic or to find problems/solutions or they just don't want to be douche bags.

The deal in here is that very few people do critics, and even less gave GOOD critic, this only full the art threads with meanles comments of "oh, this look cool" that would only help to feed the ego of the pseudo-artist.

I do some critics, but a lot of the time you see people who are in a very beginner level that you can point ALL the mistakes, so you just have to say "work with anatomy" because is there so much to work that pointing everything is not just a lot of work, you might stomp over the view of the guy. Also I don't critic on threads of people who I dislike (critic is something you do to help people, if I dislike someone I will not make any critic) and there are also people with very good skills and a very defined point of view that you wouldn't want to critic (critic the style of someone else and not the flaws is stupid).

So at the end making art thread is pointless, no one critic and there are only "oh cool" comments that doesn't help. Also I'm not going to critic any work anymore, because I dislike how this forum is going and the people I like I have them on msn, and I can critic them by there (so why critic someone I dislike in a forum I'm not liking anymore, when I can critic people I like on msn?).

Edit:
Rio should make a recommendation system, where you should gave rec points to people who gave good critics, to motivate people to say something more than just "wow thats amazing".

Or, they're just lazy.

What's a pseudo-artist? DX!

I agree. I don't think there's anything wrong with saying something like "work on anatomy" if the problem is general. It's a good idea to leave links to places like Posemaniacs, et cetera, so they know where to start, though.

Art communities, by nature, are popularity contests. You can be popular by being kind and active, or you can be popular by being a good artist. Either way, you will bring in a lot of "oh cool" comments, anyway. I don't know why people have sticks up their butt when people compliment them like that. It's the thought that counts, not the articulation of it. No one will feel very good about what they do if they don't know that people like it a lot. So if everyone stopped posting their compliment-only comments, I'm sure some people (especially beginners) will feel discouraged.

Oh. And your drama is petty. Don't like it here? Don't post. Done.

Some other people might know whether or not this is true, but I think it's called karma on other forums, right? Either way, that's subject to popularity. Things run fine as they are.

Everything it will remain as a popularity contest until people realize that the "oh cool" doesn't help anyone.

I certainly dislike the "oh cool work", and I'm grateful when people tell me "I think the necks are to long" or something like that, because this mean I can keep working on my skills.

Also, yeah the drama of disliking MT have a easy solution (go away), but there is to much to troll that I can keep coming here to troll some people (how MT isn't a forum to share and critic art, I can be a douche bag against other douche bags or people I dislike, so why do a effort in being nice?)

It has also occurred to me that once you reach a certain level in your art. Your popularity meter begins building, and then all you get are the comments that say "awesomesauce, epix, holy shit" instead of crits, unless you ask for them. I mean I don't have a problem with those comments. Strokes me ego. And I understand we got a lot of people who don't have the time to be able to crit all the time (lazy people too) so...you know..it's just gonna be this way.

If an artist is truly looking for critiques, they will seek them. "oh cool" is not a bad comment to make. You can't demonize someone for that. Sometimes that's all they can say, or sometimes that's all there is TO say. Those kinds of comments can easily be ignored if the artist wants to ignore them. I tend to. Though I appreciate the compliment, it's not something that requires a lot of attention.

The ability to critique an artist actually depends heavily on the artist, not just the critic. Most artists here already have an idea of what's wrong with a piece or what needs overall improvement in the back of their mind, but they are too lazy to fix/learn these things unless someone else points it out to them. Therefore, the artist stays in their comfort zone. For critiques to happen, the artist needs to try new things. That way, "real" deficits in knowledge become more apparent. In other words, if it's a subject that the artist has been drawing for a long time and they make the same mistakes over and over again, they've probably acknowledged it as a mistake and won't feel motivated to fix it. If it's a new subject and they don't realize when they are making mistakes (for example, a first attempt at coloring), then a critique will be more effective because the artist actually learns instead of being told something they already know, but simply chose to ignore.

I don't know about you all but I usually like it when someone actually says why they like my drawing, or why they don't like it etc etc. The little "cool" comments make me think "well why...like what makes it cool man". I mean yeah I'm grateful that they like it but I want to know why so I can focus more on that type of stuff, you know? And maybe a little "I'd like to see more of etc etc from you" so I'd know what I need to start focusing on.

I'm still working on my art, I want to make everything I draw epic, and I post in my art thread so others can comment and help me reach that level. I thought that was the whole point of that section of the forum. I really don't think it should be a popularity contest, thats what deviantart is for.

I like critics in art classes--cause the teachers force you to do it, but you don't want to look like silly goose, so you have to find something constructive to say. And since you're there face-to-face, people also usually find a way to put in what they like. Perhaps a combination of "I like this, but that could use improvement" would help satisfy all parties? With of course an explanation for why you liked something, and why you think that other thing needs a change/how it can be improved.

I haven't done many critics, if any at all, so maybe I shouldn't even be writing anything now.

Don't give a critique unless someone asks for it and don't ask for a critique unless you're willing to put up with the negativity that may show up. That's all there is to it.

@ Blue Dragon
That's what I usually do. Point out what I like and point out what I dislike and how to improve those points I thought needed work.

People should learn to make a 'criticism sandwich'. You start and end your critique with a compliment or five on their work, and fill the space in between with the flaws you found.

There are some people out there who are so far beyond my level that I just can't critique them, and am therefore forced to resort to, "Cool!" or "Great job."

And then there's the other extreme, where I just don't have enough time to type out every flaw I saw, and I have no doubt that people have felt that way about my stuff too. I'm in school. Time isn't easy to come by, and when I do, I usually spend it drawing.

When I CAN critique something, I'll do it to the best of my ability, though I admit to slipping into the "oh, that leg looks a bit off" from time to time.
