But you're still an ass. MOVING ON! 8D

Ok, so, I've notice that there a some people (not in here) constantly say "Ohhh, i dont know how to critique" or "The face looks like turd, teehee!". So I've decided to make a guide on how to critique without looking like an ass...yeah so, LETS GO!

Now every artist likes and hates critiques at the same time, because you're art is like your baby. We create them, so if anyone insults them, chances are, you'll beat the living snort out of them. >:D

This is why we need to be kind, and honest when we give critiques. Giving out critiques, saying everything is like turd will get you a bloody nose, or giving out a critique that is paint with lies , gives the artist false hope. :c

Being kind, polite and straight to the point.
This is important, cause people always like to know whats wrong in their work, and want to fix it asap. (well...some people anyways). Don't go around making a big story about how the arm muscles work, unless its relevant to the subject at hand.

And be kind D:<! No body likes a critique that says "You F*CKIN' N00B?! HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN F*CKIN DRAWING?! Harakiri yourself!"

The proper way is, "You seem pretty new to this stuff, your anatomical skills seem to be a bit unstable. You should study the basic of anatomy first. Then blah blah blah..."

Oh and one more thing, try not to use TOO many terminology, some people might go "EHHH??? Whats a pelvis? D:". Or Explain to them what that term means...or tell them to Google it Cx.

Be Honest when you give critique!
Honesty is the best policy...or so they say. Its important to be honest. If the face really looks like turd, then you should say it look like turd...in a polite manner. Don't just go "OMG! the face looks like turd", instead try "The face needs some work. Its anatomically out of proportions.".

Anyways, yeah, point is, be honest, don't tell them the body looks super hot, while in reality it looks like a wooden piece of silly goose wine glass....It GIVES THE ARTIST FALSE HOPE! ;A; and ego -_-;

Miscellaneous Stuff to do when you're giving out a critique.

I kinda forgot everything else that i was gonna put in context, so I'll just put them in point form! <:D

-If you think some part of the drawing is wrong, be sure to first point out the mistake, and then possible solution to fixing it. Don't just leave the artist hanging! D:>

-If you're uncertain, maybe seek someone with a higher artistic visual level then you.

-Have confidence in your critiques! But not over confidence D:

-Stylistic advice. such as provided by Celestial Fox
"I also think it's important to mention the parts of your critique that are stylistic. ("This might be a style thing, but I think that the neck should be a little shorter.")

Also, if you and someone else critique the same piece and disagree, try to come up with a solution so that your critique is justified. Try a redline. Or you can say, "If you go with Person X's suggestion, you'll get a more cartoon look, but if you do [this], you'll get a more realistic look.""

-Cross referencing. Such as mention by Obitual Crow
"Link your terminology like Torso because we all know that a lot of people are lazy to use google"

ummm...I'll come back and edit this when I get my brain in one piece <_<; Thats all! <:D

I hate euphemisms. They destroy society and constantly make us change the way we bring bad news. I think people kinda need to suck it up and take it. Spending time beating around the bush gets both parties nowhere.

Hehe yea probably. There's a time for everything. When you have to be nice or when you have to be mean. So I agree. But I don't think being euphemistic is corrupting society. More like making it better. But you can't be nice all the time.

I'm sure there's a difference between being euphemistic and being specific.

E.g;
#1. Umm... err... good job! Practice practice practice! :D
#2. Your anatomy isn't developed enough; if you want to get anywhere you need to take art seriously and work your butt off drawing the human figure.

Spoiler! :
Perhaps this is more a culture thing, but people in my country couldn't stand being critique at (not me though). Criticizing means impolite and could even be considered insulting. Strangely though, we like to talk behind people back (perhaps this is because we couldn't criticizing someone). If there's something wrong with something, just gulp it down and smile in front of the artist, saying "Heeey... this is good ^_^ "

You know, you can get around criticizing someone just by wording your sentences differently. ;D

I kinda feel like I may have misread somewhere, since this is such a basic thing, but
TELL PEOPLE WHAT THEY SHOULD DO INSTEAD OF WHAT THEY'RE DOING WRONG.
That is to say, constructive criticism. Don't just tell people the deltoids don't work like that IRL. If you're so smart, why don't you do it yourself you smartypants? DDD<
So DO do it yourself. Explain how to draw the deltoids properly. Redline. At least, link to a picture where you can see how stuff looks in that position. GIS is your friend.

If you're not sure exactly what's wrong, make sure you're not the one who's mistaken(yay mirrors! :D), then say so.

THANK YOU for this Iccy. Resa had an awesome thread like this, but it died with the old forum. Maybe the useless vague critiques will appear less often now? ;D
