Unless their is absolutely nothing wrong with it, that is a lie.

How can someone not do a good job if their work isn't perfect?

Frankly I listen to every critique because art is subjective and if the person watching it likes/dislikes it, I'll at least know what effect I'm having on viewers.

In order of improvement, I look at the critiquer's art thread and see if their art is awesome, like the above poster. When it is I take special note and try out their advice.

Yes, Seefy, rest assured I believe your art is awesome. xD

The problem with that though is that sometimes, the viewer just doesn't like the art style at all. There are folks who love anime style and then those who completely dislike it. You really can't do anything about the folks who do not like the style itself.

I stop critiquing when the subject I critiqued doesn't apply what I mentioned...however when they do try to do something about it, I regularly check on their progress. (ex: Matt, Cifra, Sutari,...) Sort of like favorites or something ^^

But I really don't like giving critiques because it ends up too long and textual (tl;dr) and takes up so much of my time (because I love adding references, redlines, other notes and step by step stuff that most people would tl;dr anyway) then I find out I get completely ignored. That's basically why I completely ignore giving critiques even though I visit every single thread =_____=. I give critique when there is a note to C&C please or anything related but again, if ignored, I ignore as well. ^^

Critiquing people is pointless if the person you gave critique to is not interested to become an apprentice. In fact, most of the people I critique are irl because they really seem to take me as an idol (which is not good so I redirect them to my own idol >___>) and so they make an initiative to ask me personally or online which is nice.

In the end, giving critique is utterly pointless on the side of the critic, instead, it should be asked for by the person wanting it.
Sorry as it may have sounded a bit too elitist.

Agreed. It sucks to give a critique and not get any response at all. It's possible the person wasn't expecting such exacting critique, that they're probably ashamed to reply back. If you don't have a thick skin or aren't willing to learn from a critique, don't ask for one.

You didn't kill her did you?

That's two wasted pages of my Art Thread that I'm never getting back. Thanks a bunch.

Staying more on topic, I have difficulties giving proper critiques due to the fact that I lose my words quite easily. Most of these get ignored so like most have said already, I just crit. the people who I KNOW would respond and appropriate the advice given into their Art.
Another thing I hate is when people can't take critiques. I mean if you can't accept a good, in-depth critique then what's the point of saying "I'd really love for people to help me." Then when you crit. them, they'd argue that their style prevents any sort of flaw whatsoever. If your character's head is huge, and their arms are dot-sized then that's an anatomical flaw. At the very least, people could learn in the fullest the basics so they can avoid getting into these confrontations.

Argh, I did it again; I lost myself. I've probably just re-iterated what someone has already said but what can you do.

Blackmage's critiques focus on pretentious art jargon that absolutely no one uses. :/ You gotta understand, dude, that no one gives a crap about how many fancy terms you throw out. It's all about the actual content, which, incidentally, in your critiques mostly amounts to near-zero.

I generally say good job because I actually think its pretty good. I say great job or that's amazing when I think its like godly-perfect (which I rarely use). I'm not the most articulate person so I have the HARDEST time giving critiques. Sometimes all I can think to say is "ohh something's off" and then I don't end up commenting on the thread at all. So yeahhh, I'm guilty of saying "ohhh that's good." But I don't think there's anything wrong with saying that. It isn't like I'm telling them they have PERFECT work. I'm just saying they have a nice sketch or whatever.

I think a lot of people are afraid of being too mean. But I don't mind critiques at all. If anything I think I need it because I could use something other than "cool stuff" all the time. I don't want my ego to inflate since I do know I still have much to learn. I only get silly goose if someone is really rude about stuff.

@OC - I consider it an honor to have you regularly check my thread. For the record, I actually have a folder on my desktop with all your critiques saved in it (especially your Naomi redesign).

Same with anyone else. If a critique I receive is long, but full of good information, I'll save it. A long critique, to me, means someone put thought into it and didn't just slap it down. In short, I love long critiques. No, I PREFER long critiques, although those quick 1-sentence ones are fine too.

^ Two paragraphs of talking about myself. Anyway, for those of you who are afraid of being mean, the person you critique can usually tell the difference between a silly goose and someone who genuinely intends to help. If they can't, and you're one of the latter, try adjusting the words you use. Instead of "that sucks because of . . ." try "that part isn't right because of . . ."

It's surprising how big of an impact those little word changes can make.

I can never come up with critics that aren't obvious so I never comment in art threads

For me it's always seemed really objective. I'd love to give and receive critiques like "These are your strengths, which by the way are awesome," coupled with "These factors are what you need to work on." I prefer critiques like these. Sort of like a Yin/Yang kind of vibe telling where I am.

When someone has a level of skill clearly higher than me I never try to say what I think they're doing wrong because (1) There's a good chance I'm mistaken, (2) They probably know already, and/or (3) I'm not entitled to give them that advice. So in such a case I just compliment their strong points.

When someone is around my level or lower I'd love to help out by giving objective input provided they want it, and I think in such a case saying only good things is a bit insincere. But just giving negative feedback is... well, stupid, ya know. Positive feedback loops being better than negative ones.

I don't mind when other people of lower skill than myself critique me. I think anyone can help everyone.

I like people to be brutal when they critique me. Blunt honesty is the best for growth.
