I've been noticing in people's art posts that people will always say one of two things:

"Wow, that's good!"

Or

"That shoulder looks weird, work on anatomy."

It's annoying, and I really wish people would start giving real critique, other than just these things. You can say "Nice Drawing." Just add something to help them too.

Also, I know some people give real critique and I thank them for that. Not only that, though, but some people are going around writing bad comments about other people's artwork. Please, for the sake of everyone on MT and all artists everywhere, JUST CRITIQUE THE DARN WORK.

Amen.

Though, it's hard to avoid.

Tbh, I'm definitely more compliment-oriented than critique when I comment on people's pieces. But I try to be specific about one thing or another, and I give like one-sentence crits. Hooooopefully I'm not one of those people that you're talking about. D:

Well, if people actually tried a little bit, other than "Work on anatomy!" It would probably help people.

Don't be afraid to come off a little mean, Clock is a perfect example. He tells it the way it is, although he can sometimes be a little rude. XD (No offense Clock)

Doing this may make them feel a little bad right now, but a lot better in the long run.

I don't know Ozzar, some of your critique hasn't been much more then a complimetn ... But yeah, I think we all do it, even if we don't mean to.

Meh, I only compliment when what has needed to be said has already been said.

(Actually, I think I actually did it sometimes, but I think I'll be more straight forward from now on)

The reason people critique like that is because there are so many crybabies on the internet. And people tell each other to work on anatomy because people need to work on anatomy.

That isn't very specific.

What's not specific? The internet crybabies thing or the anatomy thing? From what I can tell, people are usually willing to get specific if you ask them. Just don't be afraid to ask them.

Trust me. I'm not afraid. I have types out a 1000 word critique on one piece, external links, redlines, and paintovers included. I am just simply too lazy, so I write a few short sentences on what's good, and sometimes point out a few things that need work.

While we're at it: this thread seems to be aimed at specific people--who are they.

Well, not everyone is interested in giving critiques. *shrugs* It's their right not to give them.

Telling someone to work on anatomy is useless. Heck, half the time, telling someone to practice anything is pointless. Most people practice anatomy and other aspects of art to at least some degree anyway, and EVERYONE knows that they should be doing it. It doesn't tell anyone anything. If someone is messing up anatomy, tell them HOW they're messing it up. It gives them something concrete they can act on immediately.

Eating: you out.
The question that I ask myself is, "Why should I go out my way to give a huge detailed critique in the first place?". I critique when people ask. When they ask for advice, I give it. But I won't go around critiquing people on their art threads. That just ain't me. And I think alot of people are like that on here. Sometimes i've commented on peoples threads and they don't give a shit. So why waste all that time and energy?! So my message is, If you want critique - ask for it. If you dont ask, then you shouldn't expect any. So we as fellow artists should critique people constructively when they do ask for it, and give small menial comments about how leetawesomeepix they are when they don't want it.
