I'm just curious if there are any preferences towards one or the other on this matter.

if you see a series with both an anime and a manga do you instinctively go for one or the other?

is there any reason why?

Will a series not having one or the other turn you away from it?

well anyways i am more interested in knowing what you lot think, but seems unfair to ask without giving...

Me personally, i prefer manga if given the choice between the two. Actually it' likely been at least 3-4 years since i last watched an anime outside of the odd 'flip past adult swim and stop in the middle of whatever they're showing' kind of thing. Usually this is more of a 'sticking with the original thing' (well as original as a translation can be anyways) but the odd discrepancy pops up in that such as the Evangelion Manga (vastly prefer it to the anime)

I like anime, because I'm too poor for manga. XD

It's depend of: Which is the main story teller and Which is the best worked.

For example I wouldn't read a manga of Evangelion, because the art is poor (compared with the animation of the serie) and the serie was the main story teller (the same for Gurren Lagan and FLCL).

And in a differente case I wouldn't watch the anime of Beck, because lose the magic of the manga and the animation is poor (the same would go for Gantz, Berserk, etc).

Now, there are also cases where both anime and manga are good, then I see both. In this case would be Akira, where both anime and manga, are sightly differents, and both are awesome.

Now, most of the anime are mangas first, so I tend to gave a preference to mangas.

I prefer manga's over anime but that's because:
1) you can read faster with manga instead of waiting for it in an anime which is set at a specified pace
2) it's much easier to go back in a manga than in anime
3) the way the story is told, I find, is usually better in a manga.

Of course, there are some exceptions when the anime is just as good or better than the manga and in anime, it's just great to see the characters and the world just come alive.

I generally prefer manga for reasons I'm not exactly sure of it. Part of it is that I have a lot more access to it and it's easier to download. I only watch an anime if I really like the manga. The other part's gotta be that it's a collection of still images that I can use for reference whenever I want (even though I never do).

Ex. I read Black Cat, got completely addicted, but the anime's animation and story kinda failed. The characters looked nice, anyway, and the English dub didn't totally fail.

Hmmm..For me Manga is better..

The stories are complete and better unlike the ones in Anime where they have to shorten some scenes..

Manga. I can always have it with me. Plus, the Anime usually strays fromt the Manga, and dubs suck.

I prefer the original one. If the original work is manga, then I prefer the manga. If it's anime, then I prefer the anime. Same wise, if a game is the original work, then I prefer the game (or novel, or whatever it is).

There have been times when I've preferred one over the other depending on the series, but I have no real preference. However, I do think that anime may have a higher capacity to effect me emotionally simply because it has music. (which is what I remember most of all about scenes from anime/movies/visual novels that have been burned into my memory)

That being said, I think manga is a bit more personal since there are less things that vary from person to person that can either ruin or increase a story's emotional impact. (preferences in music, voice acting)

I find it weird when an anime is exactly the same as a manga. I don't understand why that is done. It's like saying that comics are an inferior medium and are only created so they can one day be adapted to animation or film. I mean I can see the draw of wanting to see all those badass fight scenes animated or whatever, but the quality of most tv anime is so low at this point its just hugely disappointing.

Also like any form of adaption, anime runs the risk of turning you off of the sources material. I first watched fist of the blue sky years ago but wrote it off because the animation was just so shitty. Earlier this week I read the manga in its entirety and it was amazing.

Aghh, if I could erase the anime adaptation of Fate/Stay night off the face of the earth, I would in a heartbeat...(then again, I don't like the manga adaptation much either..hmm)

But anyway, sure there are adaptations that don't live up to the source material, sometimes they even go as far as ruining it for the viewer completely, but that's unavoidable. There's bad manga, and there's bad anime.

Personally, I'll usually stick to whatever medium I found first. For instance, I don't plan on watching the Bakuman anime.

I think I prefer manga--it's not that I don't like anime, but I prefer to read the manga first, in case the anime's completely off. Full Metal was fine, but there are others that I was just like-wha?

But really, I think I like them both equally, just if I had to choose, I'd pick manga.
