Well, they can actually be done well, don't get me wrong... the original Alita series even had a decent one... But very often it's just a very lazy excuse to make character A fight character B... Or, even worse, it gives the author an excuse to puke up all of his/her half finished characters with no ryhme or reason.

We already know who's going to win in the end, right? So is it too much to ask for a little "grey area" as to who is actually an enemy or not?... >_>

Where is party C's tournament arc?

And to be fair, I can see why people dislike it, but really. Most shounen have terrible writing and characterization that honestly I find tournament arcs can be a bit refreshing. Sometimes it's nice to see an author focusing on what they are actually good at - crazy fight scenes - rather than having them try and fail to tell a story that anyone cares about.

Well, I guess that's where YYH was special. It was 5 v 5, so not every hero won everytime.

Flame of Recca and Mars (and other manga) also features 5x5 tournament. Group tournament isn't a unique thing (though not as often as 1x1 tournament manga). Still tournament arc is cheap...

Besides, even if the main hero isn't always win, the main hero group is. When reading manga like that, it's not about who is winning (since the answer is obvious), but the rather how could he win.
