Dear Mummy,

It is my birthday today. I am seven.

I didn’t have a birthday party. I remember the parties I used to have with you and Daddy. All my friends would come to our house and we would play so many fun games. My favourite was the game when we all had to pretend to be statues when the music stopped. I was really good at it and I always won a bar of chocolate. Then there were the presents. Oh, how I loved them! You and Daddy always got me lovely presents. My favourite was the pink teddy I got when I was five. I keep it under my pillow during the day and I hug it at night. I loved the cake too. It had so much pink frosting on it and little lumps of red icing that looked like roses. I used to think they were real and keep them for days, until Fluffy ate them.

This birthday wasn’t as good, but it was still a bit nice. I got a cupcake with one candle and I got to blow it out. The other children began to whine so Joe had to relight it and let them blow it out. Still, I was the one who got to make a wish. I shan’t tell you what it was, or else it won’t come true, but I bet you can guess what it is. I got one present, and that was a Barbie doll. I tried to love her but she is so hard and stiff. I let her sit on my bed, but when it comes to bedtime I shall hug my pink teddy.

Do you still have birthdays where you are? I hope you do. I can’t give you a real present you can hold but you can have lots and lots of kisses.

Love Kirsty

Dear Mummy,

It is my birthday today. I am eight.

I still didn’t get a birthday party. I didn’t want to ask for one in case I sounded rude, so I made lots of hints. I said, “I wish I could have a party for my birthday”, and “I hope something good happens when I become eight”. I didn’t get a party and I knew I wouldn’t, deep down, but I am still a bit disappointed. I got a cupcake with a candle in it. I made the same wish as last year because it didn’t come true. I thought they were supposed to come true. That’s what you used to tell me. Did I do something wrong? I wished really really hard this time so it should come true.

This year’s present was a book. It’s not a normal book with writing in it though; it’s blank so I can write stuff in it. I’m supposed to do that but I’m not really. I don’t think it’s against the rules but I took out each page. I read this book at school and it says if you fold one thousand paper cranes, your greatest wish will come true. We learned to fold them at school yesterday so I think I can do it, but they look a bit like ducks. I’m getting better though!

Lots of kisses,

Kirsty

Dear Mum,

It is my birthday today. I am nine.

Why aren’t you answering my letters? I know you’re staying with Daddy, but you said that we would meet up one day. Am I coming to visit you? If so, can you post me a ticket? If you already have, I think it got lost in the post. Can you send me another? I really miss you and Daddy.

I didn’t have a party AGAIN! Just a small cupcake with a candle in it. I tried telling Joe that nine is an important year but he told me to stop being selfish. He’s annoyed because last week he found my book and said that I had ruined it. I tried telling him about the cranes but he just wouldn’t listen. He said that I barely deserved a new present. I got a new pair of red shoes. I don’t really like red but I didn’t say so, because that would rude. I might wear them once or twice to look polite but I won’t afterwards.

You and Daddy always got me the right things. You know what my favourite colour is and you know how much I love parties. When you come back, or when I visit you, can I have a party?

Love and kisses,

Kirsty

Dear Mum,

It is my birthday today. I am ten.

I didn’t get to put this letter on the ground, because I am in bed. Joe put it there for me. You know- the special place where there are lots of stones with names on them. He put it on the soil in front of the stone with your name.

A few months ago I was having a shower when I found a lump on my neck. I went to the doctors with Joe and the doctor said I was very sick so I had to go to the hospital. He said I have something called ‘cancer’. That’s what Daddy had, do you remember? The doctors at the hospital said they’re going to give me a special mask that will make me fall asleep. Then, when I wake up, the lump will be gone and maybe I can go home.

They said it is quite severe and Joe told me that if the special medicine doesn’t work, I can go stay with you and Daddy. Is that true? I really want to be with you again. Joe is nice, but he could never be as good a parent as you and Daddy. Besides, he is only fostering me until I’m a bit older.

If the special medicine doesn’t work, can I really come stay with you? Is there room in Heaven for me?

Only time can tell, right?

I folded all the cranes, but I’m still here. Is it because the special medicine won’t work, and I’ll get to be with you and Daddy then? Is that how my wish will come true?

If my wish does come true, please can I have the biggest party in the world? Joe says I can have as many parties as I want when I’m there. With you two there, I think it’s going to be just like when I was little.

Love Kirsty

Very good. It was really sad, but in a good way. I came very close to crying, but I'm in a computer lab with the rest of my history class right now, so I held it in. Of everything you've written, this is one of my favorites.

I hope the girl survives. :)

I hope so too. In fact, let's say she did. 'Cause I can do that. >:D

Yay!

It could been classified as one of the "classics" if she had died because it was symbolic or whatever, but I like the stories where the main character survives much better. Happy endings = epic win (to me).

Touching goggy. I'll post mine later. I'm working out the kinks.

Googy. It's hard to make me cry with writing. I loved it. I really think it would be better if she died seeing that she obviously isn't happy and she just wants to be with her parents.

It made me tear up a little. That poor girl is so innocent that she doesn't understand how final dying is. Man.

You can imagine what you want. She's dead, she's dead. She's not... she's not. Whatever floats people's boats. :)

I just don't think she understood that she might die. But it depends on your beliefs whether or not death is final. Either way, it's always really sad if someone innocent dies. Especially a girl (for me at least).

Oh... oh gosh. I cried from that a bit. It's such a sad story. If this were real, I'm sure that that girl is in heaven(if there is such thing as heaven and silly goose, I'm just an atheist) is happy.
