@BB - Probably around the time I learned how to lock layer transparency and use gradients. I still have absolutely NO skill compared to some of my favorite DA artists.

I do my coloring mostly in Photoshop, sometimes in Sai. I was talking about Photoshop on that one.

With layer transparency (I think that's what it's called), you can lock a layer and ONLY edit what's already been drawn. Like, if I colored the hair in with brown, then decided I wanted yellow instead, I could apply the lock and scribble all over the screen with yellow, but the only place it would show up would be the hair. REALLY convenient, especially when you've got a picture with a ton of color all over the place on one layer (i.e. hair) that would be a huge pain in the butt to go in and re-color manually.

Also, things tend to look better when you scale them down by half when you finish. Most of my drawings are done at 1600x1200 px, then scaled down to 800x600 to hide my sketchy lineart. (Thanks to Obitual Crow for that technique. I do believe he got it from Chii.)

That Iris pic. Jeez. That's really good. The movement in it is A+.

@Seefy - That's awesome, especially coming from an A+ grade artist. Now if only I could do that well in school.

@Bacon - Pain in the butt, isn't it? Obitual Crow losing that contest to a Photoshop spammer was really disheartening, but it's got a lot of good uses to it. Filter spamming not included. I've never used filters on a drawing before.

@Ceti - I sorta thought so too *headdesk--I'm not supposed to look so positively at my own stuff!*. See below: vv

My only qualm on my last update was that Arion was prettier than Iris. I STILL can't draw girls as well as guys, proven by the following pic:
Image
List of fails in the above pic:

1. Siren's face
2. Stiff pose again
3. Crapworthy background
4. Lead smeared everywhere
5. Siren's hair (the part around her head)
6. Hands
7. Feet
8. The knife. I need to learn to do weapons.

Glad you guys liked it.

INCOMING REQUEST AND REQUEST WIP. Seefy's is done, but I don't like how it turned out. It's like a really shonen-ish style that just doesn't look that good on Miri. I owe her (Seefy) a redo.

Image

And, since I'm taking so long on Fabiafidus's request, I'll post a WIP to show that I'm actually working on it:

Image
We have a really similar style, and our skill levels are very close. (Fab's is the linearted one) Therefore, Rique's probably gonna turn out looking exactly the same. I'll just lineart this one, since I don't know what colors she's got.

Arm is all out of wack. I know theirs forshortening, but still. Also, the top of the girl, is a lot skinnier then her waste, and she is still quite a bit busty

You should practice dynamic poses. Try grabbing a piece of paper and recreating these pics here.

Focus on perfecting form, anatomy, and composition. Use A LOT of guidelines. All good artists do. It's cool if your sketches come out super messy; in time, with diligence (which you have a surplus of...!) you will clean it all up and be the very best, like no one ever was!

I'll copy those poses as soon as I'm done here.

Herpaderp . . . Miri's supposed to be busty, but I knew I messed SOMETHING up on that one.

My game characters ^. From left to right: Mizu (water battlemage), Orrin (knight), Hayley (healer/mage).

Anyone got tips on making game sprites? I'm using 50x50 boxes right now, but I have no idea about anything else. For one, how do I save an animated .gif? It flattens the picture whenever I try.
