Nice man, I love steampunk stuff. This is the second time I've heard you mention a sketch thread, where is this so-called sketch thread?

Cant see much going on with the plane, but the other objects seem to be correct perspective-wise. More details would make for better practice!

That's really good, Son. You are awesome at perspective. And about the Coke machine: I'd totally drink out of a teal-colored Coke bottle. XD

I see exactly were the light is coming from, which is good! How does the method work?

1. Draw the lineart
2. Add flat colours
3. Add a new layer with neutral gray (50b in ps, 130 in SAI)
4. Use different types of gray to make shadows and light

Oh, yeah, I can see how that worked. That method is actually the root of my complaints, though: The shdows are really ruddy and aren't life-like. Try using a more purplish or brown-toned grey to do it.

You can see a tutorial about shading with colored layers here:
[Part 1]
[Part 2]

This tutorial was made by Ms,Shatia Hamilton, the maker of the webcomic, [Fungus Grotto].
The method is essentially the same, but the shadow colors are not a true grey.

It's definitely a good idea to work on value but I think you're going about it backwards. Usually whenever I've read about it, it's been suggested to do an initial pass in grayscale to establish your light and dark values. If it looks good in grayscale, it'll definitely look good when colored.

Photoshop and Gimp both have a nice layer blend mode called "Color" which you can put over top of your grayscale painting to add appropriate colors. Check out this really nice tutorial by David Revoy if you'd like to see what I mean.

Celestial-Fox and Nisaren: Thanks 8D Im probably just gonna use this technique for practicing in order to get better at using different types of shading, but who knows, i might end up using it more than that
