It’s official! Tokyopop is closing it’s North American publishing division located at Los Angeles, California on May 31. The company will continue to operate it’s “global rights sales” out Germany, whatever that means, but I believe it means we’ll still see manga releases from them though possibly on a lesser extent and all digital on on demand print. Their film and European operations will not be affected by the closure but many employees in the Los Angeles branch will be laid off due because of it.
It is unclear as to why Tokyopop is closing their NA division though the declining anime and manga market may have played into it among other factors such as Kodansha no-longer renewing licensing rights to Tokyopop making it tougher for companies like Tokyopop with no direct ties to Japanese manga publishers to acquire titles.
