In a surprising move, Kodansha and Dai Nippon bought large stock shares of Vertical, 46.7% and 46.0% respectively, earlier this week. Vertical’s headquarters are based in Japan with an additional office based in New York City. Their main operation is translating Japanese books into English including manga such as Black Jack, Chi’s Sweet Home, and Twin Spica. Last month, news were mentioned of future Vertical titles as Osamu Tezuka’s Princess Knight (Ribon no Kishi) and Drops of God (Kami no Shizuku).
Kodansha is expected to pick up where Del Rey left off in publishing their series’ this year and it seems like Vertical will also be publishing 2-3 Kodansha series along with their other already-owned licenses this year.
Aside from the Vertical President stepping down and being replaced by Kodansha’s President, there are no news of any restructuring or layoffs as of yet.
In light of this news, I have hope that Kodansha’s manga releases will have continued quality translations and more Kodansha titles will make it to the States. Here’s hoping to Karate Shoukoushi Kohinata Minoru, Capeta, and Giant Killing in the future! ;D
