Okay, this article is about intelligent characters who are also reclusive as asked by Chevie Charle Sumacbay in one of my recent articles. Plz remember that there are many other ways to describe an intellectual character. Thus, we’ll figure out how to properly display intellectually reclusive characters in a manga. First, you have to create a shell. A shell may be a past experience that in one way or another severely damaged him/her. So they build like a physiological wall around them self. He/she shouldn’t think much of the world . Then, you must pick the gender of the character.
The character must be isolated and alone. Not any friends really and has an attitude that says he doesn’t need any one but himself. He has feel above others, so he shouldn’t talk to much, or risk losing his cooth, or an attitude that makes him above others, thus have him hard to socialize with. Gray Eyes 1 & Gray Eyes 2 are examples your characters eyes should look.(for gray eyes 2 I just mean the bottom right one)If you were to take out the eyes in gray eyes 2 and made them like gray eyes 1, you’d have a perfect example of how superior attitude person’s eyes should look. Having them half closed shows that he is not very caring about what happening around him; gray shows he’s deep in thought; no pupils make it harder to read his emotions. With pratice you’ll have something like this: Gray Eyes Complete.
Your character can be a neddish type or coolest guy he knows. Having your intelligent character be popular while be a genius (then he would most likely be the main character)will mean you have to have him either open about being smart like Kyouta (the guy) in Kyou Koi wo Hajimemasu, or the intelligent character is closed about having a high I.Q. like the situation in Full Scratch Eiji (you’ll have the job of making a similar situation). They mostly work the same, both easy to make comedy out of.
And of course we evil smart (as in the bad character, not a good who has evil as a characteristic). Now, you can usually scale one for its modesty to superiority.
1-Isn’t really a bad guy. Should talk alot with the main character but when come to shove he’s not you friend(reluctantly). probably because of something that he believes in. Slits work great for eyes, say Hans in Nononono, has no silts though, but you can tell he not used to drawing them.
2- Every one’s favorite type of character to , the guy who seems nice but is total an evil two-faced genius, like Bakura in the manga Yu-Gi-Oh. You need to signify when he change his face. there are many thing you can use like (if you use slits) eyes open, or his collar goes up, or his eyes change colors, or his hair style changes. Obviously if he’s two face his bad personality needs to be hidden.
3- Completely evil characters. Well, how do I say this, he’s completely evil. Or to elaborate, a Mastermind. Gray eyes to the max. Effected by nothing, is hurt by nothing, feels nothing. Don’t be afraid to put most darkest side of the moon on this character. And do not be lazy making his Tower Effect. Tower effect are when the characters do something in either continuation of the opposing character, or is prepared for whatever the other is trying to do by stop it in the future. I know it sounds confusing, so check out Shinigami-sama ni Saigo no Onegai wo Chapter 5, it’s like uh “Ha, ha I was expecting you to do that .” moment.
Okay forget everything I just said, new subject. Two types, two-faced and popular but secretive about intelligence. Firstly they need a hard shell. It not that hard really. A superior acting girl/woman that seems to have nothing that penetrates her for such reason, which is your job to create, to find her self relying on some one (especially if that girl was once a bad character)is a popular to set off some attention. If you done it before you would get it how it works seeing that this is probably the only way it works(no offense to women). I really don’t see an intellectual girl as a main character who is shy, unless she has a second main character who is a guy (Romance: Kyou Koi wo Hajimemasu). Most people have there character start out as a popular person who in turn hides her intelligence to fit in. If that character has a hard shell, she may be hiding inner resentment against the world. Say her mother died when she was young and her father left her. A hard life as so will be a good to show why she’d be smart( Say like she started to focus rather on school after the incident. She just puts up a facade to fit in the crowd )
Your character doesn’t always have to have a shell, it just helps the manga get more realistic, really it all depends on the type of character your trying to write. As for evil female character, which is the most often used way of displaying one, it’s about the same as guys, I can’t really give that much info unless I know what type of character your trying to write.
Whew, well that’s all for now. Re-reference and read some of manga I place(because that’s really the only way to get better.
Well that’s all for now, and as like to say catch you on the flip side.:P
